  1. Jasper will be tough again.  It seems that every year, Hudson is going to have "the best team they've ever had" or something like that, and then they beat somebody big in predistrict to really get everyone jacked up, but then flame out in district or the first round of the playoffs.  This whole district has the potential to be tough, so it should be interesting...

  2. My earlier post was intended to be a knock on Coach Sutherland by any means.  Totally on the contrary, I was trying to say how impressed I was with 1) HJ's staff, who was able to keep things under control when their season was 7 seconds away from being over, and 2) Coach Sutherland's trust in the guys who work with him

I am thoroughly impressed and envious.

Best of luck the rest of the way, Hawks.  I'll be there Friday night to watch you guys again.

  3. What a game...

Let me say that I'm not affiliated with HJ -- this is the first time I saw them play since last year at the state tournament.

I did notice during the last timeout that HJ's assistant coach was drawing up the final play.  This really struck me as interesting that a coach with as much of a history of success as Coach Sutherland would allow one of his assistants to be literally holding the fate of the entire season in his hands.  I was sitting on Navasota's side, and you could almost feel the life draining out of their fans as that last timeout was happening.  Great play, great execution, and great win, Hawks.

Bottom line -- great job of coaching by the HJ staff, and great job of maintaining composure by the Hawk players.  Those guys flat-out get it done.

In a game like that, you go back to so many little things, like what if Navasota doesn't miss the front end of a one-and-one on their last possession?  Also, was Navasota's big man on the floor for the final play?  (Someone who was there can maybe correct me, but I don't remember him being out there, and if he wasn't in the game, his shot-blocking presence and rebounding ability could've been big as it came down.)

  4. I saw OF beat Coldspring Friday, and I left impressed with the way they play ball.  #11 was unbelievable in the first half -- it seemed like every time he touched the ball it turned into points for Orangefield.

The Bobcats are playing as good a brand of team ball as anyone I've seen this season.  Don't count them out against Navasota.

Besides, the notion of an Orangefield-HJ rematch is very interesting...

  5. I don't know about Warren's chances making it to the playoffs, but liberty's don't look good at all. Improvement is one thing, but going from 6th in the district to 3rd will be quite a feat. In theory everybody has a shot, but I am more of a realist.

Especially now that there are seven teams in Liberty's district.  (I'm pretty sure LHS finished ahead of Shepherd last year, anyway...)  BUT -- they are playing better ball this year than last year, and anything can happen.

  6. OldTimer -- I'd like to publicly apologize to you.  Your posts are always well thought-out and fair, and I shouldn't be downing your guys based upon the posts of a few other people.  The posts on the previous page of this thread about the Brown kid being "unstoppable" just sounded too much like some of the talk I heard prior to last season on this board.  I'd like to see the Panthers do well -- Coach Jackson is a good man.  I guess I just prefer to see a team get it done on the hardwood before all the talk about how good they are comes along.

Again, I'm sorry for painting all Liberty fans with one large brushstroke.  Best of luck this season, and I look forward to reading more of your posts.
