1. UTEP is now 11-1 in Conference USA, defeating a scrappy Tulsa team that eroded UTEP's halftime lead of 17 to 7 before falling back and losing the game by a score of 78-70 in Tulsa.  The crowd had a couple of chances to get into the game, but those chances were stifled by a stingy Miner zone defense that denied the inside to Tulsa.
2. I hope so, but as a mid major conference, UTEP would have to win out, and at least reach the semi's in the conference tournament to get in...and even then, we're talking bubble...
3. UTEP beat East Carolina on Saturday by a score of 100-76.  They remain atop C-USA with a 10-1 conference record, and a 19-5 overall.
4. One of the big differences in 12 and under and Junior League besides the base distance is that stealing is allowed according to the regular rules of baseball.  In Majors and Minors (12U), you can only steal after the ball crosses the plate.  I think it's a good idea because of the base distances being shorter in Major and Minor.  In Junior and Senior, the base paths are much longer. Having coached both Junior and Senior LL through Little League, Inc. through the now defunct Twin County Little League in Orange, I wish the PN Junior and Senior leagues great success.  Thankfully, we have an abundance of Junior and Senior teams in the area.
5. UTEP keeps possession of first place in C-USA action with a 62-51 win over SMU, at SMU.
6. I always love when the blame is placed on "higher ups"...usually meaning the league president or league officers.  You want to know what those "higher ups" do?  They VOLUNTEER their time, usually a lot of it.  They try to find sponsors, and they have probably about 10 parents out of about 200 that will help them.  the other 190 sit there and complain about "higher ups".  I was president of a Little League in this area for 3 years, followed by the hardest working woman I ever knew, and she did it for 3 years as well.  Hurricane Rita did a job on our field, and she still ran the league following the storm, with no electricity, daytime games, and cooking stuff on a grill and drinks in an ice chest for the concession stand.  When it came time for others to show how much they cared about the league and helping out their kids, we had...you guessed it!...10 parents consistently and about 190 running their mouths about "higher ups", and not doing a d*** thing to help out the league. My guess is that the person that was willing to take the reins in Port Neches Pony saw the "enthusiasm" (note sarcasm) of the majority of parents, and knew he wasn't going to have the time to field complaints about Little Johnny's coach, the color of the uniforms, and why they had to sell candy, if the had "paid their money".  They also wanted to know why they had to work the concession stand, and why they couldn't just sit in the stands and run their mouths at the coaches and umpires... There...I hope that soap box is good and crushed... ;D
7. If Texas makes free throws, they have a chance at the upset...otherwise, Kansas walks away.  I'll hedge my bet and say Texas by 5, clicking at the foul line.  There have been a lot of upsets this year, and the #1 ranking is like a curse.
8.
Houston Chronicle had an informative article about the pros and cons of getting an athletic scholarship. For example, basketball: UIL participants: 75,248 (boys) National participants 552,935 # of college scholarships 4,046.7 Pct. earning scholarship- .7% The numbers dont lie, and the reality is most will not achieve a hoop scholarship,   so parents, make sure grades are first,  sports are second because 99%  will not play on the next level.
Are you kidding?...There are going to be thousands of parents who will be on here saying you are wrong...because they have to justify their "select league, high dollar trainer, special equipment to make my kid a beast" expenses.  You can't kill their dreams, Dove, you just can't... I mean, just because they spent $10,000 to get a $4,000 scholarship does not mean they spent money foolishly...
9.
Who won? ;D
I think my Miners can take the Aggies...bring 'em on... ;D
10. UTEP made it 8-1 in C-USA play with a 73-59 win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. The win gave the Miners sole possession of first place in C-USA's west division.
11. The Miners now sit tied for first in Conference USA play, with a 7-1 conference record, and an 18-5 overall, with wins over teams including the University of Oklahoma (sucks).   The Coogs jumped out early to a 14 point advantage midway through the 1st half, but the Miners D clamped down, and then the offense got in rythym, erasing the lead, and going up by 7 midway through the 2nd half, a lead that proved to be the game winner.   The two top teams meet Saturday for sole possession of first place.
12. Though many HS coaches might not have the time, I know that Griff out of LCM hustles to get scholarships for as many players as he can, regardless of the participation in select ball or not.  I think the problem many have with the select ball crowd is not the kid, or the talent of the kid, or the coaches of select ball, it's really with those few parents who feel their participation in select ball gives their kids a free pass to a varsity spot, regardless of talent.  These parents are few and far between, but a single exposure to them gives you a bad taste for all select ball, even though the majority aren't like that...
13. So the girl from the Ozen basketball team should have the charges dropped against her, if this is a first incident?  The sports may be apples to oranges, but the punch is exactly the same.
14. I have never seen an official wearing a bright pink glove hold a futbol game up for 3 minutes for a TV time out, but I have seen one do it in football.  In futbol, a play happens, and it goes on to the next play, the action keeps going.  In football, there is about 10 seconds of action, followed by about a minute of regrouping.
15. Looking at the posts on here, we have the soccer (futbol) faction, and the "American sports" faction.  I think one of the problems is that initially, soccer was taught here in the US in a "be nice" way, where everybody wins.  True soccer is anything but that.  I see too many "white" kids lean back and kick a ball, with their center of balance leaning back.  They play against teams with Mexicans (of which I are one), who learned to play the game in a rougher, truer fashion.  It is only lately that the "white" kids are becoming more aggressive, and playing better soccer.  Don't get me wrong, it's not illegal soccer, it's purer soccer, soccer where the player runs through the kick and continues on with the play.
16.
I coach the game. Love the game more than any other.  And I find it very very annoying myself when they do flop around on the field and act like they are giving birth until the referee makes the call.  Then a miracle occurs and they are cured.  That and that miracle spray the Mexico National team carries. They spray it on a muscle, cramp, injury of any sort and they are amazingly cured.  I need a bottle of that......The fouls and the flops are not yet frequent in the youth game and not as frequent in youth and college games.  However I believe that haters of soccer will find anything they can to hate the sport, and use whatever to make to give it a bad rap.  Look at sports features.  Only shows riots where fans lose control, fight and throw things onto the field.  Same thing happens in baseball,  basketball (locally) and other sports in the USA, but not all these things get pointed out. Instead of showing great goals or great plays and good positive things from the game.  Because the fact is, the majority of people over 40 understand nothing about the game of soccer unless they have had a kid playing.  So its a turnoff.  I hated hockey until I went and watched in person and the people around me explained.  Now its great fun to watch.  Its a never ending battle of likes and dislikes.  The fact is...  anything that you like is the best........ never ending argument.   I happen to like soccer... College football... and anything else on college level.  senior night tonight at Kelly .  Game against Lumberton starts at 630.  See you then.
You have heard about it...tequila!  After they spray it, they drink it...
17. It will be extremely funny if this takes effect and we see the real "daddy ball" rear it's ugly head.  I say, not only do you sell tickets to the baseball games, but "pass the bucket" as a fundraiser when you get two or more dads' rasslin' out there about balls and strikes, and safe or out...I even say, allow pile drivers...our TASO members will be in the stands, laughing.  Even better, they will be in the stands giving "daddy umpires" grief over calls...HA HA HA HA HA HA HA  :D
18. Yep...OU sucks...ask any UTEP Miner basketball player...what was it?...Oh yeah...89-74...where was it?  Oh yeah...Oklahoma City...
19.
Does it matter what high school you play for as long as you play select?  Are some high schools better for baseball players than others?
Now beanball, I'm not picking on you specifically, but I will use your post to start the debate anew...Does the perception that select ball is of more importance than the high school team you play for, feed into the belief that select players are more "important" than the guys that aren't select?  Does this diminish a team's cohesiveness?  Maybe, the question should be...does it matter which select team I play on, as long as I am a member of my high school's baseball team?  Right now, beanball makes it seem (though unintentionally) that you can "shop around" for a high school that will add to your baseball resume... It is entirely possible that beanball is moving into the area, and wants to know which schools have the best baseball "traditions".  But the way the question was worded made me wonder...
20. Still waters run deep...and Coaches Griff and Stephenson are well known for not making a lot of waves before the season.  Let everyone else come on here thumping their chests and calling themselves "the beasts"...I'll wait till the end of the season to make that determination... The coaches at LCM follow the Elmer Fudd axiom... "Be vewwy vewwy quiet..."
21.
no big shock here...I have always felt that coming clean earns you more respect...he has done this now and it is time to move on...I suspect that 70-80% of MLB players during the 90s were juicing...they bear some of the blame as does the league itself for doing absolutely nothing to stop it...think about it, if you are competing for a job with someone who is taking juice and you are not and one of you is going home after spring training and there are no rules against it, would you take steriods?  MLB should have stepped in, they didn't and now it's over...time to move on because you cannot change the past, only learn from it.
So, if Bonds were to admit using right now, everything would be forgiven, and there would not be any calls to put an asterisk next to his name if her were to break the home run record?  I doubt it...I remember way back when, at the time he broke the record, him saying he had used "enhancements that were legal"...so now, it turns out they weren't... I guess my beef is that the sports media loves to slam on Bonds, but gave a pass to McGuire...if you're (more a collective you, than you personally, razor) gonna be outraged, be outraged consistently...Otherwise it makes it seem that you are something you aren't...
22.
"Well you know we played a great game. Give Stanford credit they are an awesome squad and Coach Harbaugh is doing a good job. Our teams was focused after the long break but I can guarantee you one thing, those guys at setxsports.com are right — we still suck," Coach Bob Stoops after the Sun Bowl.
lol...
23. [Hidden Content] Here we go again...complaining about the bowl, and the size of the stadium....they can stay home and play an imaginary opponent if they want, but wait...they mighy lose, they suck so bad.... Why is the Tulsa Beacon complaining anyway?...OOhhhhhhh yeah, I forgot...UTEP beat Tulsa in football this year....thereby proving that the suckage is statewide... BlowU gets blownout with Gearhardt tracks on their backs....
