  6. San Antonio Clark vs. San Antonio Churchill - One of the state’s highest profile rivalries is between Churchill and Clark in San Antonio’s North East Independent School District. The two schools have an annual football game known as the "Gucci Bowl" due to the historical affluence of the area. Some notable alumni from Clark include former Texas players Jerrell Wilkerson and Wane McGarity.
  7. Carter vs. Kimball - The "Oak Cliff Super Bowl” is one of the most anticipated games in the Dallas community each year. Many great players have participated in this game including future NFL stars, Jessie Armstead, Greg Hill, Chet Brooks and Clifton Abraham. Carter holds the edge in the all-time series with 28 wins 11 losses and 3 ties.
  8. Abilene vs. Abilene Cooper - Part of any good rivalry involves hatred and these two teams make no bones about it – they hate one another with a passion. Cooper holds the all-time series lead, winning the majority of games in each decade until the 2000’s. Since 1996 the series has evened out with each team winning six games.
  9. Ennis vs. Waxahachie - Few series over the years have been as heated as the annual grudge match between the Lions and the Indians. Known as the “Battle of 287” because of their proximity to one another down state highway 287. The series has had its share of ugly incidents over the years and there is clearly no love lost between the the two towns. Ennis has had the upper hand with an all time record of 43-33-1, including 12 straight.
  10. Celina vs. Pilot Point - One of the most intense rivalries in North Texas. The two teams have a storied history of success with legendary head coach G.A. Moore at the heart of the rivalry. Moore was born halfway between the two small towns and accumulated the vast majority of his state record of 408 wins in two separate tours of duty at each school. After coaching Pilot Point to state titles in 1980 and 1981, he returned to Celina in 1988. From 88 to 2001 the Bobcats won five state titles and went 163-22-1, beating Pilot Point 9 out of 13 times during that span. The all-time series is as close as any rivalry you'll find with Celina holding a slight edge at 25-23-1.
  11. LaMarque vs. Texas City - This series has had what all good rivalries have – close games, fantastic finishes and bad blood. Known as the “Battle by the Bay”, the two schools are separated by just five miles on the shoreline of the Texas coast. These two teams are typically in the hunt for a state title and between them, the two schools have seven state titles. LaMarque leads the all-time series 27-18-3.
  12. Stephenville vs. Brownwood - Two of the state's most tradition rich schools have been going at it since 1938. During the Gordon Wood era, Brownwood dominated the series, winning 27 out of 30 games from 1960-1990. The Lions were one of the great dynasties during Wood's reign winning seven state titles under his tenure. Stephenville has won 13 of the last 16 meetings and won 4 state titles during that time. The turning point came in 1988 when the Yellowjackets came under the direction of current University of Houston head coach Art Briles.
  13. Midland Lee vs. Odessa Permian - One of the things that makes a rivalry great is when there is something tangible to play for. Since this rivalry began, this game has usually been for the district championship and has also featured some classic playoff battles. In 1983 Lee defeated Permian 20-0 in the quarter-finals en route to the first of their four state titles. In 1984 Permian avenged that loss with a heart-stopping 15-14 win on the way to a state title of their own. It took Midland Lee 8 tries before they finally broke through with a 28-26 win in 1968. Since that time, the Rebels have struggled to gain the upper hand. With the exception of a nice run from 1995-2005, Permian has dominated the series with 30 wins, 19 losses and 1 tie.
  14. Texas vs. Arkansas High - Since 1912, Texarkana, Texas and Arkansas have been settling their differences on the football field, making the short 4-mile trek to one another’s stadiums in an attempt to retain, or recapture, their coveted rivalry item: a battleaxe! Texas prepares for the big game with a Bacon Fry the morning of the game. The choice of bacon being served before the game against the Razorbacks is not exactly a coincidence, since a razorback is actually a wild hog indigenous to the Arkansas area. Arkansas holds its own pre-game breakfast and serves up healthy portions of “Tiger Tails” (orange donut-twists) and Orange Crush® soda. Texarkana is actually two cities separated by State Line Ave. (affectionately referred to as “The Line”), the road that marks the border between Texas and Arkansas. The cities share a population of approximately 64,000 along with many federal buildings and offices, but they each have their own mayor and city officials.
  15. Just some more history on the Sherman - Denison thing: The Sherman-Denison Football rivalry began in 1906…a rivalry that has become a tradition for both communities and both schools. This is the longest continuous rivalry among all high schools in the state of Texas. Sherman won the first game. There were three games not played during World War I, one game not played during the 20’s and one game not played in the 30’s. Originally, and for many years to follow, the game was played on the afternoon of Thanksgiving Day. It did not take long for the rivalry to take a negative turn, involving much vandalism and property destruction. Everyone was concerned, but only one individual took positive action-Jack Barker, a Denison businessman. Mr. Barker, owner of a small ice cream parlor and store on Main Street across from the old Denison High School, wanted to create a symbol that represented good sportsmanship and excellence in the athletic competitions between the two schools. The game has come to be called the Battle of the Ax, its symbol the ax. The ax is awarded yearly to the school that wins the football game between Sherman and Denison.
