If they play BH's schedule they would probably be 3-0. Just a fact and people would be talking about how great Dayton is. At least BH fans do not have to listen to this before this game.

[/quote] At first I was "for BH" but after a while the high and mighty act got old.  They are nothing more than average at most sports.  Never seem to go much further than 2nd round of play-offs if they make t that far. That is except for volleyball and girls basketball.   Other than that just average.    [/quote] Not a big BH fan, but they usually have good teams  because they are well coached. They may not like this statement, but they take average kids with a few good athletes and teach them better football than most of the teams I see. This raises expectations, as it should, for them to play well come playoff time but they always meet superior teams there. Cannot dispute that they run an excellent athletic program for what they have. Fans should be happy with what they see every year because most programs do not see coaching and teaching of fundamentals that they do. I agree the fans seem to exhibit a superiority complex over most people they play and this does get old. Many are from Baytown and forget where they came from imo. They should improve every year with their numbers going up so they can win district in football in the next few years or when Stewart retires, LOL. My advice, have fun but get off of the high and mighty act, it places an unecessary target on your back. Let your teams speak for you. They will be fine.
  4. Would like to send our condolences from GCM and Baytown. I saw Reggie play in the Dayton scrimmage and have seen film on him. He was a special athlete and from what is said about him, a very special individual. I am  sure he will be missed. We will keep the family and community in our prayers.

THey have as many as 3 backups at every position. And they are constantly rotating in fresh players throughout the game. So when your offense or defense starts to wear down late in the game, Katy is still fresh. This is why, IMO, Katy is such a second half team. THis is the time of the game when they do the most damage. [/quote] I had a friend of mine that coached at Northshore a few years ago and they played katy in a playoff game. Norhtshore was handing it to them early and Katy never did panic. They made some adjustments at halftime and came out and whipped their tail in the 2nd half. They played a lot smarter and made few mistakes. I am sure they stay fresh on the D-line the whole game. They are the modern Odessa Permian.

[/quote] This was the 85' Sterling team that tied, i believe the #3 state ranked WOS team. 1 minute left and WOS tied on Penetrations and Sterling ahead on first downs, WOS drove about 70 yards in a minute to win the game on penetrations. WOS had around 200 or so yards in the first half and under 200 going into that last drive. Sterling had one heck of a defense that year and made major adjustments to shut WOS down in the 2nd half. WOS had great athletes at every position it seemed. Sterling's Defensive Coordinaor was Jerry Stewart, current head coach at Dayton.

  9. I read Jimmy Johnson's book, "Turning the Thing Around" years ago and he mentioned that when he had a kid prone to fumbling he never told him " do not fumble" before going out on the field. He would say " hold on to the ball". He was a Psychology major in college and his philosophy was always positive reinforcement. Sometimes when you fumble you worry to much about it was his philosophy I gathered. Anyway just a thought.

  11. The coaches cannot go out and play for them. The kids are obviously on their heels and not the aggressors. They need some leadership and some fire in their bellies, play like they have nothing to lose. It is amazing how a few positive things can wear off on a team.

[/quote] I think there were a lot of questions coming in to this season that they were hoping would get answered by now. I am not going to blame the coaching because it can just make matters worse and there are enough issues with this team. The offense has to know which direction they are going. You do not have a chance if you can line up and run right over the line at will. If it takes taking some D-linemen and moving them over, then do it. We already have some injuries and it could be worse. I would venture to say that the JV line may be bigger than the Varsity line. Move them up and teach them the game as it will not be worse than now. I am not saying the kids are not trying, it is just not working. I think the Soph. QB moved up can play several postions if they elect to not play him at QB the whole game. He looks like he could help out at receiver or slot receiver now. Give them a chance and we should have the Junior QB back for district and from what I saw last night he throws the ball better and  is the better leader on this team after seeing the Sophs have some trouble. The RB postion is fine and even the backup should be on the field somewhere. The best athletes need to be on the field on both sides of the ball. Heck, play the RBs and QBs on both sides, Dayton does it and they are not worried about injuries.

Go get your first win... [/quote] Agreed. GCM could actually be a great passing team if their receivers would learn to catch the ball, the QB has the arm for it. I remember during our scrimmage with them one receiver constantly trying to catch the ball with one hand, that looks good on highlight reels but ain't worth a darn for the most part. [/quote] Nederland is a few steps of maturity ahead of GCM and it showed last week. They helped a very inexperienced QB out with a successful running game. BH may not be ready yet but believe me they are always well prepared. I hope it is enough to grab a win for 19-4a. We are sitting on goose eggs. I have not seen BH so I cannot really predict a winner. With an average passing game and the running back that you guys (Lumberton) did not get to see because of injury, GCM could move the ball more consistently. I am usually hard on QB's but GCM's is tough and leads very well and should get better at making decisions. I wonder if he will play this week. I believe you guys should play Nederland very well. Your physical and have enough of a running game and passing game to make the playoffs in that very tough district. Good luck.

[/quote] I am getting off track here but when you here people talk about RB's letting a play develop offensively, the same can be said defensively. The kids have to be patient and read and remember what they are hopefully taught in practice. Do not just run after the ball or where you think the ball is going. Stay at home and read.. No patience to read the play, they all want to make the play, which is selfish. A D-lineman's #1 responsibility is to keep the OL off of the LBs so they can make plays. Do not run around blocks allowing OL to get to the LBs and open up running lanes in the process. I would rather have a patient, average and disciplined DE or OLB than a athletic OLB that overruns pl1ays constantly. I get pissed watching the players ignore what they are taught. Stay at home and do your job or stay on the bench. Lol
  21. Panama, Did you know one of the keys to that years Lee's team success was that they made an unpopular decision to move, at the time, a future NFL player from QB back to safety? Started a sophomore QB the rest of the way. That team had two future NFL players on it. One was the second pick in the draft and I know you know who I am reffering to since I am aware you know Lee's history very well. My point is that good teams and good coaches can take a team and tweak them during the season or make big changes that they see will benefit the team. This move alone did not change their season but was a stepping stone that gave them confidence to play with anyone. Lee has almost always had this swagger about them and this comes from their ability to prepare their kids well. I hated Lee but respected them in every way because you can see the confidence they play with. Hopefully, for you they can regain this advantage so you can enjoy their season. All of the current 19-4A teams are, or should be, looking to gain this sort of advantage that gives them confidence to turn their bad performances around. I can say this as I support GCM for personal reasons, if they could get any discipline on the defensive side of the ball and every player will handle their responsibility on each play and help out second, then they will be successful this year. The offense will eventually come around but the defense needs to carry this team now. They have the ability to win most games this way. Each position has to be taught a role ans never waiver from that role. I imagine the other teams in 19-4A have the same issues and the first teams to rectify their issues and play as a team will be in that top 4. I have to believe that Lee could be there as well. They reallydo not have any less talent than almost any of the 19-4a teams. I saw their Spring game and one scrimmage. They have the ability to make the top 4 with the talent I saw. They lack to discipline I mentioned before. BH, in my opinion, does not have the talent at many positions that someof the other schools have, but has always played with discipline. They are struggling because of a new system but will catch on. They are smart players who realize they do not have to beat you with athleticism. No offfense BH, but it is an opinion and you do have some athletes just not across the board and nobody really likes to play you because of what I just mentioned.

[/quote] Tell this to Lake Travis! Not always the case. Stewart purposely scheduled some tough opponents early to prepare his team for not only district but for playoffs. I have seen them in two scrimmages and they are as advertised. They are not good because they have great players. They are one of the most disciplined and well coached teams around and create good athletes I.to good players. 5a vs 4a is always going to favor 5a for obvious reasons. You can't just give them the title but you can predict based on what you see at this point. I absolutely cannot say who the other three teams will be in the playoffs because of their play to date but Crosby should be there. The district looks weak to this point so it should be a battle that may be fun to watch regardless of current records. I remember years ago Lee getting blown out by a 5a LaMarque team 63-0, then playing them close in a playoff game 10 weeks later. All teams should improve.

BH was 3a, GCM new school, Lee 5a, North forest was combined with another school and was 5a not to many years ago, Dayton has been in both. GP has been there a while. Not a really good comparison although I wish all schools had the same enthusiasm as most in the g-triangle. Baytown has been split up into 3 schools and GCM being new has no tradition. Lee has much tradition but dwindling numbers and Sterling has athletes but cam never put anything together. GCM took many of these. You guys love your football win or lose but not all areas can say this. Dayton has the small town that supports their team now that they have had a program worth supporting. I only wish Stewart had been given the Sterling years ago. They have been the same since he was Def. Coordinator there.
  24. Dayton, maybe GP and I do not know after this! GCM looks soft Defensively and cannot finish a drive without a mistake. I can only speculate about the other teams. Maybe they can grow up the next few games. They are now hit with the injury bug it seems.  Crosby should be there in district.
  25. I hope the injuries are not as bad as they looked last night. It is not getting any easier, GCM has Manvel next week with no time to heal. Bye week the next.
