  1. i will get our stats tomorrow, but Hall is arounf 11 boards / game and bernsen had around 6 steals/game Victoria Fontenot probably should get newcomer.... she was pretty consistant all around.
  2. Old ref- Thank you for the comments.... -Mike Fogo HJ
  3. sounds like it was a good one! Congrats Lady Jags! Good Luck in the playoffs!
  4. If HJ is going to go deep in they playoffs, they will have to shoot better from the foul line. They were 11 for 29! The game should have been a 15-20 point win, but o-well! Little was great tonight! Good Luck to all in the playoffs!
  5. We must look a like Poppabearstar. I will bring some cash. You better also. Can't wait, I can taste the nacho's now with peppers of course. ;D Yes it is all you can eat for one not the whole family unless they are under the age of 4 years old. Then I will gladly pay for them. Anything over 5 they will break you. These kids can eat. Your wife gets to eat free also because she is probably the better half. ;D Tell you guys what..... after the game I will set up a chair right in the middle, and the loser has to go get it and bring it out like a waiter. haha By the way, the wife is definitely the better half! -Mike
  6. it may be a shrug your shoulder attitude, but in sports, sometimes you have to tip your hat to the other team.... (The superbowl is a good example of this.) Mc Neese shot the ball extremely well from ALL over the floor. I said in my post that they had poor shot selection and still think that was why they lost. That is fixable. Playing good defense and forcing 22-24 foot contested shots and the other team hits them consistantly is very hard to fix... Losing doesn't make you a loser..... Failing to learn from a loss and losing due to the same thing makes you a loser...
  7. Those 3's weren't uncontested. Most were with the shot clocl winging down and a hand in the face. LU just had some trouble with shot selection and had a few stretches were they went cold. Coach Tidwell did fine, they just lost... it happens sometimes... Give Mc Neese credit. They shot the ball extremely well!
  8. Word on the street is that Coach Humplik went to some camps this winter. His "back" call has improved and should be a little more consistant with the customary "safe" signal on any close play at first. He also has added a few new catch phrases to go with the classic "Yes Sir! and "Atta boy!" I hope Coach Vansa brings his A game or Silsbee could be in for some tough games with the Hawks.
  9. To anyone who has played at Orangefield in the past six years(in any sport): It would be a crime to not mention the lady who does the weird "turkey gobble" noise. She seems to be at all the sports and I crack up laughing every time I would hear her
  10. By the way..... JDAD can now be called an honorary official after he corrected the officials on a jump ball call tonight! haha
  11. Not an upset...... St. pius is really good this year.... Ask Kountze. I think Pius beat them by 20+ at Kountze. They have a 6"10 post player who is pretty good.
  12. HJ was shorthanded too. Their starting center (Hall) was out due to illness.
  13. If it was late in the game, then I would assume that reserves were in the game.... That leaves startes on the bench.. I know the punishments are harsh for leaving the bench during a fight (at all levels of play.) I hope this does not hurt Silsbee down the line. On another note, there were several Silsbee people ranting and raving about HJ (I'm speaking about the incident after the first HJ-Silsbee game) This incident makes me think that HJ's security measures might not have been the problem.....
  14. It still counts as a win. The coaches will have them ready.... different players now have different roles... it takes a little time to get back in sync.
  15. Well with HF now having 5 losses, it pretty much ends their playoff chances.
  16. Tough loss for BC! Jasper seems to be getting better each game...
  17. JDad.... come on...You know me better than that..... The athletes part...... you can teach an athlete fundamentals..... it is much harder to teach a fundamentally sound player to be an athelete... Also, I have coached girls and boy's at the varsity level... the statement that girl's listen and try harder is not true.. It totally depends on the player, their dedication, etc. Also, I don't think that 3pt % is higher in girls basketball... Regardless.... the discussion on officials is really pointless... If a coach doesn't want a particular official, they can scratch them. That is really the best and only solution for high school athletics. Do I wish it were better, yes. BUT this is what we have and this is what we must work with.
  18. I believe the final was 80-23. Katelyn Bernsen had 23 and 14 assists LAtricia Moore had 20 + .... I will have more info / stats in the morning.
  19. Now coop, If you can make it not rain this week, I will write your name in in the next mayoral election!
  20. A big thank you to channel 6 for supporting girls baskeball!
  21. I know HF will be ready.. they played them close last time.... HF has to win to stay alive for the playoffs, other wise OF, HJ and SILSBEE will pretty much have the 3 spots wrapped up. Silsbee has been playing well lately though.
  22. Hate to play devil's advocate all the time but here goes: First, the game has changed.... but here is how. 1. Conditioning (Speed). Players train year round now... they are in shap and they can run. This leads to more possessions, which leads to more fouls called.. (It also leads to more opportunities for missed calls.) 2. Conditioning (Strength) Players lift weights. Fouls are harder because players are stronger. The rule book says that a foul is any action that gains the defenisve player an unfair advantage. If the offensive player is stronger and can absorb contact, it probably won't be called. 3. Emphasis on athletes, not just basketball players. I coach and I will take a gifted athlete over a shooter any day. I can teach shooting, I can't teach hustle, speed, height, etc. I am sure other coaches are the same way... so each team will always have a few "unskilled" players who are good athletes. These players tend to play a little more reckless than the typical basketball player. 4. Coaching. Most high schools have one basketball coach, with an assistant or two pulled from other sports. In gilr's sports, it usually works this way.... Head Coach, football coach / volleyball coach. The lower level coaches don't know how to teach fundamentals. At HJ we are lucky to have 3 "basketball minded coaches" on the boy's and girl's side. 5. Timing. If there is a shortage of officials (and there is.... our AD had to call the9th and JV games vs. Hamshire) They should schedule girls games on different nights than the boys games. This would allow a greater pool of officials, as well as allow fans to see both teams play. (Or schedule them at the same site for lower classifications) * I know this would never happen though due to UIL rules about games on school nights. Finally, 6. Attitude.... If you look for blame... you can always find it.... and the officials are an easy target. I always tell our girls that Officials DO NOT MAKE US: make bad passes, miss free throws, forget plays, not hustle... etc. These are the things that make a team win or lose over the course of a game..... Look at HJ's losses, poor rebounding, free throws, etc lost those games not calls. *On a side note, I may be one of the hardest coaches in this area on officials, but I think the officials do a decent job. I have had to call some games, and literally every 5 seconds there is a judgement to be made. It is a tough job to do well and I think the guys who put on the stripes and call games in this area try to do a good job. -Mike
  23. I am up with a crying baby right now, so let me weigh in... To be fair.... it is not just officials. Players attitudes, language, sportsmanship as well as parent and fan behavior have all gone down the tubes.
