Much that has been said is NOT true. However, everthing that has been said is NOT UNTRUE. All of you have hit on some issues we as referees are concerned about.
First, We do not have an abundance of seasoned officials ready to step in and call "big" games. A "big" game could be a 1A game with the right ingredients. We do have less seasoned refs in 1A games generally because of the lack of good, experienced refs along with all the other classes we serve. Calling ballgames is actually easier than you give us credit for. In fact, as you continue to referee the game "slows" down a bit as you become more aware of what all is going on around you. The big key is for us to keep refs around long enough for them to mature as officials. When we send 1st thru 3rd year refs to do Jr. High and sub varsity games it is not easy to here from fans, coaches and players (and commentors on web sites ;)) what an idiot you are for not calling everything YOU see from the stands. I have never met a basketball referee who wasn't a fan of the game before they became a referee. You are correct that fans see things from the stands that we can't see. However, for the most part, it is better for the guy on the floor to have the whistle. We will NEVER get ALL calls right in any game. We strive to "manage" a game by interupting the flow as rarely as we can. That sometimes means if a player shuffles their feet a little but did NOT gain an ADVANTAGE by doing so we may not call a traveling violation. The hardest thing for a fan to understand is the concept of ADVANTAGE - DISADVANTAGE. The next time you see a play you think should have been called but was not: Ask yourself this question: Did the player gain an ILLEGAL advantage by their action? If there was an illegal advantange then the ref should have called a violation.
Lastly, After each of our games (varsity & sub vastiy) the caoches have the opportunity to grade each of their officails in several key catagories. We do have accountability from the ones that matter most! The coach!

"I witnessed one of our girls simply rip the ball away from a Hardin girl the other night because she was stronger - I am sure lifting had nothing to do with that. "

    and this happened when?

Nothing wrong with your post except the fact that it should be the head coaches decision to lift or not...  We all know that the AD makes decisions, but they should (And probably are) made with the coaches input.  As a track coach, it is great that you want your kids to lift..that is your decision.... would you feel the same if they were made to lift on the day of a meet?  (May not happen at EC, but it does at other places.)

The whole thing is about who controls practice...the AD or the HC...you could replace any school for EC and the argument is still a good one..

Coach Valastro is as good as they come & for anyone to post on here otherwise tells everyone that you don't have a clue what it takes to run a successful athletic program. Most of these witchhunts stem from a parent with a son/daughter whose getting no playing time.

Stay physically fit???  Really?  Nothing keeps you more physically fit than running up and down the basketball floor.  The athletes who are not participating in basketball need to be working out not the basketball players.  They should be working out in the gym.

Hey Tripple, If you never stop lifting weights then you will only have to go through the "initial soreness period" once that comes with just starting to work out ( minus the little aches & pains all good or bad athletes go through). I am in touch with a bunch of programs in the area & all of the successful programs go through weight training during the season.
That's correct, but to miss a whole day not going in the gym at all....for weight lifting?  That's not smart to me.
I didn't mean every day....just steady workout regiment.

It is true you have to adjust to the officials because you have no other choice.   But your statement just completely threw the UIL rule book out the window and allowed the official to call the game the way he wanted......................
Not really.

It is no different than two baseball umpires calling a different game at the plate. One might call it tight and one might call it wide. Both know the rules and both believe they are going by the rules. It is a judgment on what is outside, what is low, etc.

There are some rules like stepping on a line is out of bounds that are clear cut. There are others that are judgment calls and a player needs to play the way that ref is calling it. It is not the matter of throwing out the rules but what one guy sees.
CORRECT, if East Texas BB has officiated like he claims, then he should have the same rule book that I have which states " All contact is not a foul". So when you inject human judgement into the equation, you get different styles of officiating.

The refs made bad calls on both sides. It was a fair game! Tigers won!
I agree, Santa. Everone sitting around us also agreed that they were not cheating for Silsbee... they were just bad....consistently bad....all night long. We were surprised that Gus was still conscious after the game from getting hammered in the lane. Silsbee's big man played the entire game without a single foul. WOW

I spoke to DC today an he said that "HJ will need to get Lebron an D.Wade to stop me tonight"  ;D ;D ;D

That doesn't matter, DC is going to get his points. The issue is "who is going to stop Sutherland, Bosha, & Gus. When you figure that out, then who is going to stop Prudomme???

If player is out of harms way let it go. Stop once basket has been made or when the ball cames to the other direction. This way was told to me when I was coaching a little dribbler BBALL game.

    correct!!!!!
Finally.....logical thinkers. Shooting a breakaway lay-up going away from the injured player doesn't endanger her in any way!!!!!! My gosh, no wonder that officials take a beating on this blog. They don't get it!!!

Maybe they didn't get an invite to the Gamble or Dallas tourneys. Ever thought of that?

Travis may have been told to stay local ($$$) therefore not going to Whataburger.

Also, Travis has never liked playing in the same tourneys that would have other 21-3A teams involved. That's why he has never played at HJ or EC tourneys.

I personally would have liked for him to have stayed in the YMBL this year. But I am not going to fault him for being in the Big Sandy or Woodville tourneys. He has played a fairly good schedule so far.

I don't buy in to that line of thinking "don't want to play where my district opponents are playing". If you have a good team, just beat them more times than 2 district games. If you don't have a good team ,you get a chance to play against their strengths & get better before district..

But in other sports if someone gets hurt they don't stop the play.  Football they aren't going to stop someone who is about to score, in baseball they're not about to make the batter go back an bat because Jimmy got hit in the mouth with the ball.  Why for stop for  basketball when the other team is about to score?
I understand what you are saying, Im just saying that sometime we dont have safety as our first thought process, but there are times that we do. Football is now looking at injury as being serious, look at the rule changes on leading with helmut and head shots. Baseball being hit in the face as a batter is dead ball and play stopped, I know it is by rule but kind of makes sense. Football usually the injured is laying on the field after play is over but only because play is usually away from injury but again the play stops when ball carrier or receiver is down. I know it sounds like I am making your point but again we are talking about kids not the pros. Pros are now demanding better judgement for their safety, so why not for our kids. I know they worry about faking injuries to stop play but I think blood visible to an official is good reason to stop play.
Again I understand what you are saying about rules, Im just saying that sometime the rulebook and human nature dont go hand in hand. I know OldRef and I know he would do the same thing again no matter what rule book says. His heart is bigger than any rulebook.

Hey Doc, getting hit with a baseball no matter where you are hit ( not just the face ) the ball is immediately dead. The coach or trainer can go onto the court to attend to the bleeding player while the fast break play is finishing on the other end because a good ref is NOT going to let the play come back towards the injury....he will then kill it immediately.
  13.
I can't blame OLDREF for stopping the play.  i think at that point your natural instincts kick in and you become more concerned with the bloody mouth and the condition of the player vs the fastbreak.  I don't think he would have blown it dead over a twisted ankle, but the flow of blood is why he stopped it.
I'm not a ref and i dang sure wont play one on this site.  So, i don't know what the correct or the answer is to the question.
I just gave you the correct answer per NFHS rules. It is not OLDREF's progative to decide which ones you enforce & which ones you set aside.

You are right, Buna. You never stop a play going away from an injured player no matter how serious the injury because after a made basket or Team B steal, you are going to stop action immediately not allowing any player to come back towards the injured player. That's Officiating 101 !!!!
Sorry, OLDREF, you were wrong on this one.
