11-5A D1 2025 Season

Angleton and Friendswood keep rolling. Both teams are putting up solid offensive numbers. La Porte fell to a very tough PN-G team at home. Crosby held tough with Fort Bend Marshall in a very competitive game, and Kempner blanked Houston Wisdom for their second shut-out of the year. Kingwood Park put up good numbers again after their loss to Dayton last week, and the Cardinals got the better of the Eagles in the match up of the birds.

Now, the preliminaries are over. Everyone gets a blank slate to begin the real season and district play after an off week this week for the district. We'll see what adjustments will be made and what has been learned as we head into district play.

Angleton will try to figure out why they lost 3 fumbles last week at Foster after only having one turnover in their first two games. They still have not had an int. Foster would not have scored otherwise. La Porte will try to determine why in 2 of their games they got off to such a slow start. K park will try to find a defense somewhere. So far, they haven't been seen. They even allowed Clear Lake which doesn't have much offense to score 47 points. Pasadena and Kempner will try to prepare themselves mentally for losing every game to the other six. Crosby needs to keep working as despite the 3 losses, they seem to be headed to the playoffs again. They did better against Dayton than did Porter and much better than K Park did. They also did better against FB Marshall than did Friendswood. Friendswood seems to be rolling with 2 easy wins and will use this week figuring out how to maintain that momentum. But don't count out Porter just yet.

In both LP games, they had TO’s on the first drive inside the opponent red zone, or end zone.

I’m more concerned about the D giving up an average of ~30 ppg with very poor tackling.

I was surprised to see looking at the latest poll release from DCTF that La Porte is no longer in the top 10 falling from #5 to out of the poll. This is unusual, especially since they lost to a very good team in PNG. Smithson valley lost a game and they are still #3. Why? I think we often give too much credence to polls. How you are ranked does not affect your chance of success, just your talent and how you execute.

I'm actually glad. Like I said earlier, the season--including preseason--has been a madhouse with all the press for the stadium, expectations for the team, etc. I'm hoping now that some of that has passed, they can get back to concentrating on football. They've played a heck of a schedule and come out 2-1 vs. 0-3 last year. They need this off week to clean up some play, rework on some fundamentals, and get refocused. Maybe make a couple personnel adjustments. But, they'll be fine. A LOT of talent on this team. Losses can be humbling.

I did see the DCTF computer generated poll of all 1500 teams still had LP at 13 in 5AD1. Vype has LP at 4 now. Angleton & LP just flipped. Angleton is now 3. Vype doesn't separate D1 & D2 in 5A. So, Randle is 1, Iowa Colony is 2, Angleton 3, La Porte 4, Kempner & Friendswood even made it into the rankings at 8 & 10 respectively.

PN-G--this year--is a much more complete team IMHO than last year. Bailey has really come into his own, and the D is much improved from last year. I have little doubt we'll see another SOC/PN-G tilt this year.

Simon still did well (146 & 2 TD's), and could have had more. But, LP was passing more in the catch-up game. The up & coming QB looked good. That would be a personnel change I would go ahead and make knowing you have the experience to come back in if necessary. He adds a different dynamic, and an escapability/scramble threat.

OlDawg, do you prefer #7 or #8 at the QB spot?  LaPorte's SOPH class is loaded with talent at QB, RB, and WR.

7 is the talented soph. I’d prefer he get the next start. I think he’s mature enough. He was field aware enough to throw the ball away when y’all applied some pressure & he couldn’t escape. That hasn’t been the case with 8, and TO’s or big losses have occurred that LP can’t afford with their O system.

I think it’s time to see what he can do for more than just a series, or when LP gets behind.

If opposing D’s truly have to worry about a passing/scrambling threat, Simon and Ruffin would be a very hard stop. Moreso than they are now, and the young man can definitely throw the ball.

That would help take a load off of a young secondary that’s still finding their way.

Weekly Rundown:

Thursday night, Kingwood Park ended Kempner's undefeated streak. Friday action saw Crosby dismantle the Eagles for their first win of the season. Crosby's previous opponents were a combined 9-1 before this week's contests. So, they had played a strong schedule of opponents. Angleton's opponents were a combined 3-9 before this week's action, and that may have played a part in the Wildcats getting off to a slow start against the Spartans. The score was 7-3 Angleton at the half. But, the Wildcats turned it on in the 2nd half, and exploded for a 49 point surge for the easy win. La Porte faced a tough Friendswood team, and started slow. La Porte led 21-14 at halftime with a Mustang KO return for a TD, and a TO that led to a short field and score for the Mustangs right before the half. The 2nd half--similar to Angleton--was all Bulldogs, with only the 2nd team giving up a late TD. The 2nd team La Porte O also punched in an impressive 80 yard drive for a score against the Mustang first team D.

This Week's Key Game - Crosby @ Friendswood. Both teams are eyeing a PO spot, and this game could determine possible seeding with Kingwood Park watching the outcome.
