I still think it is asinine that Stros being 3rd or 4th place team in MLB has no regular player starters on the  AS  team except Pena as reserve.  Maybe it's me I don't know.

IMO, the Astros have some quality defensive players, however their hitting this season has not been good. Peña has been pretty decent and Myers is having his best hitting season, but other than those 2 , they haven’t been to good

The Astros are still in 1st and Brown has been good except for his last 2 outings  I think the main culprit is that he has been behind in the count too often these past 2 games. It’s hard to get a quality performance when that happens

I know that they have a lot of injuries, however I would like AggiesAreWe’s thoughts on why they continue to put players in the lineup that are weak hitters

Uneventful loss today 5-1.  Brown way off but what the hey stuff happens.  Only highlight was Short dinger late in the game.  Life goes on get some rest and pick up later.

Mariners sweep the Tigers 8-4 so we 5 up now

That statement that I put in bold is all I need to know about what little you know.

Entering today's game, Houston is 1st in hitting in the American league and MLB with a .259 team batting average.

They rank in top five in OBP (.324), Slugging (.411) and OPS (.735) in the American League.

Now, had you said their hitting of late (last 4-5 games) or first part of season (first 20 games) has not been good, then your statement would have been accurate.

Here is the current active roster for the Astros and their hitting statistics:

You tell me who should be in lineup in place of or with these players: Altuve, Parades, Walker, Diaz, Smith, Caratini and Dubon.

You have Hummel, Trammel, Short, Whitcomb, Matthews and Corona to choose from to play in the other two batting positions or replace one or two of the players above.

Keep in mind that Pena, Meyers, Alvarez, McCormick, Rodgers, Melton and Dezenso are all on the IR.

It's a given that Pena, Alvarez, Meyers and McCormick would be every day players if they were not on IR.

So my thoughts (and what any person with any sense could see) is that Houston puts in what available players they have to fill the lineup for each game. Pretty dang simple.

Let's hear your thoughts.

Paredes had been added

last week, his second straight American League All-Star selection. Paredes will not attend All-Star festivities in Atlanta.

I posted about the Astros being represented in the All Star game, but really, it’s a popularity contest. Craig Biggio could never beat out Ryne Sandburg. Check this out:

Craig Biggio and Ryne Sandberg are both Hall of Fame second basemen with impressive careers. Biggio holds the edge in career hits (3,060 vs. 2,386), doubles (668 vs. 409), and stolen bases (414 vs. 344). Sandberg boasts a higher career batting average (.285 vs. .281), more home runs (282 vs. 291), and more RBIs (1,061 vs. 1,175).

Here's a more detailed comparison:

Craig Biggio:

  • Hits: 3,060 (2nd most all-time for 2B, behind only Hornsby)
  • Doubles: 668 (2nd most all-time for 2B, behind only Tris Speaker)
  • Home Runs: 291
  • RBIs: 1,175
  • Stolen Bases: 414
  • Batting Average: .281
  • Hall of Fame: Elected in 2015
  • Longevity: Played 20 seasons, all with the Houston Astros
  • Gold Gloves: 2
  • Silver Slugger Awards: 4
  • All-Star Selections: 7

Ryne Sandberg:

  • Hits: 2,386
  • Doubles: 409
  • Home Runs: 282
  • RBIs: 1,061
  • Stolen Bases: 344
  • Batting Average: .285
  • Hall of Fame: Elected in 2005
  • Gold Gloves: 9
  • Silver Slugger Awards: 7
  • All-Star Selections: 10
  • MVP: 1 (1984)

AggiesAreWe,

I know Altuve and the others you mentioned at 1st should be in the lineup, I was talking about the next group that you mentioned (Hummel, Trammell, Short, Whitcomb, Matthew’s, and Corona). You’re tellling me that they have no one else on the bench that can hit better. If that is the case they have done one poor job of player development

I I would also add that I asked a simple question, however you who always think my posts are negative, have me quickly realizing that you are one big sourpuss with your negative responses

Again it is not about stats, it’s about wins and losses and if they continue to play like these past 6 games, they will fade fast. Hopefully that will not be the case

I can just about bet that any team in the MLB that has as many every day players and key backups on the IR would struggle finding players to replace those guys like the Astros. No team has an unlimited surplus of good players. I think Houston is doing a fantastic job over the last 2 months with what they have to work with due to the injuries and losing the players to free agency and trade. So many baseball experts have been praising the Astros on what they have done this season.

But here you go again trying to use a small sample size (6 games) to try and make a point. Completely ridiculous.

But using your "if' prophecy, if Houston plays like they did for the last 2 months, they will win the West by 12 games and be 1st or 2nd in AL in wins and losses.

You calling me a sourpuss is hilarious.

Like I have been saying, you only come around when you have opportunity to be negative. Houston losing 5 of the last 6 gave you that opportunity. Pretty sad.

BTW, my prediction of the Astros being in first place in the division by All Star break came true. Up by 5 games as well. But you heavily doubted that and called me crazy.

Glad they are in 1st and hope they continue to stay in 1st

You may not like my posts, however they are pretty accurate

This season the ones that made the all stars are the only ones that should have and the players I mentioned that are weak at the plate with the exception of Short have a batting average less than 200 IMO that is not good

So once again a pretty accurate post

A week ago they had a nice winning streak, the past 6 games no

You remind me of the fan that was upset because they keep score or play my son and the best 8. I’ve got to give you credit, you are a great stat man

You state that they have the #1 team batting average in the AL, so why is their record not as good as the other division leaders

Some of these players don’t have the ABs to make an informed decision just yet. I remember Bregman had like 32 ABs before he got his first hit. Peńa and Myers not only bring good bats to the plate, they increase the chemistry that team sports thrive on. All sports players have their ups and downs. Sometimes the timing is impeccable. MLB plays almost twice as many games as the NBA or NHL, so we really can’t judge a season on a couple series.

Because they started the season with a 26-25 record in the first 51 games. Since then (May 23rd) they have gone 30-15, which is best in MLB over that period of time, including this little 6 game slide. Those first 30 games the Astros were not hitting as well as they are now. At one time they were hitting around .205 as a team. Now they are at .258 (which still leads the MLB) and just a few games ago was at .262, which was the best in baseball. They have been the best hitting team in the last two months.

Houston still has the 2nd best record (56-40) in the AL behind only Detroit (59-38). 4th best in MLB behind the Tigers, Dodgers and Cubs. (teams that Houston won series against here recently)

BTW, Houston is the only team in MLB that is currently top 5 in both hitting (#1) and pitching (#5, 3rd in AL).

I'd say that kind of play overall will easily win the West and be no worse than 2nd seed in AL.
