Write up from the BH Sports Report also a great pick of Mr Ybarra for two of his 35!! Barbers Hill defeats Bmt. Central 73-71! With 9.47 seconds left in a tie game, there was no doubt who was going to get the ball for Barbers Hill. I thought I knew. The BH faithful knew. And Beaumont Central surely knew. But it didn't matter, Brooks Ybarra took the inbounds pass, looked for an opening and then drove to the hoop. There were Jaguars all around. They tried; arms flailing, swatting for the ball. Somehow Ybarra got a scooped shot off toward the backboard and the ball found the bottom of the net as the horn sounded. The buzzer beater made a winner of the Eagles as they advanced to face LaMarque in the next round of the state playoffs. Game Quarter Highlights 1st - Central grabs early lead getting out to an 11-7 score. Brooks Ybarra drives for 2 and coverts a freethrow; Central 11-10. Jaguars extend lead to 15-11 but Jake Miller scores under the bucket and hits a freethrow; Central 15-14. Ian Hamlin put Barbers Hill in the lead with driving lay-up; BH 16-15. Ybarra ends the scoring by driving down the lane; BH 18-15. 2nd - The teams began to exchange 3 point baskets. Central starts it off by hitting a long trey from the left side. The teams exchange baskets to remain tied at 22. Then the guards got back into the act as both teams hit back-to-back 3 point baskets which made the score 30-30 with the quarter winding down. Each team hit a pair of FTs and BH got one more three point play as Barbers Hill took a 35-32 lead into the dressing room. 3rd - In the third period, Jon Daniels found his shooting touch from the outside. Daniels connected on 3 consecutive as the Eagles tried to create some separation. After getting a 7 point lead on Central, the Jags got a bucket with a freethrow cutting the deficit to 4. Ybarra then connected for a 3 and the made a couple of FTs to extend the lead to 8, 52-42. The Jags got a couple of baskets to to trim the margin but BH responded and held a 55-48 lead at the end of 3 quarters. 4th - Just when it appeared as though the Eagles were ready to take control of the game, Central put a clamp on BH's outside game and began their rally. With BH ahead 59-50, Central was able to get within 3 at 61-58 with just over 5 minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets and freethrows as the game clock began to wind down. With BH ahead 64-61, Ybarra once again was able to allude his defender and drive down the lane for 2. After a quick stop, Daniels once again connected from the arc, BH 69 Central 61 with 2:17 on the clock. Central then began to take the ball inside scoring 8 unanswered points and tied the game with 51.75 second left in the game. After a BH timeout, Central converged on Ybarra on the inbounds pass. Brooks quickly found Miller standing alone by the hoop for an easy 2; 71-69. Central brings the ball down, passes it down low, draws a foul and with BH students waving calmly converts both FTs. 71-71, 36.82 seconds. Then both teams attempted to give it away by turning the ball over with getting a shot. Barbers Hill then brought the ball to midcourt and called timeout. Ybarra then hits the buzzer beater for Barbers Hill's first playoff victory in Class 4A competition. Bmt. Central 15 17 16 23 71 Barbers Hill 18 17 20 18 73 BH: Brooks Ybarra 35, Jon Daniels 14 BH 21-10 -

From the Bh sports Report! Congrats BH on a great season and congrats to SUPERSOPH for the dumbest first post ;D BH Loses Heartbreaker to Bay City, 43-40 Rough game as evident by no call on Lauren Sadler Just a couple of day ago, Barbers Hill fell behind for most of the game against Dayton but rallied at the end to secure the victory. And for a while it appeared that BH was going to repeat that perfomance. But Bay City would have none of it as they held the Eagles scoreless for the final 1:48 of the contest to defeat BH by a score of 43-40. After starting out strong, Barbers Hill could only score 4 points in just over ten minutes from the second quarter through the middle of the third period. At one point in the 2nd quarter, the Eagles lead 21-13 by applying a suffocating pressing defense and converting turnovers into easy baskets. But the Lady Black Cats began to apply their own press and the Eagles began to turn over the ball. Bay City capitalized by taking the ball to the hoop. Most of the time, BC did not score off of the first shot but they pounded the boards and got mulltiple offensive rebounds and put backs. By the time the second quarter ended, Bay City had a 27-25 lead. BH scoring woes continued in the third period. But thanks to the Eagles defense, Barbers Hill managed to stay in the contest as Bay City could only tally 6 points as BH went scoreles for the the first 4:15 seconds of the third quarter. That drought ended when Cirby Manchaca nailed a trey to make the score 33-28 Bay City. Though the Eagles fought back taking a 34-33 lead, they just weren't able to hit the open shots down the stretch. The contest stayed close the rest of the way as both teams struggled to score. In the last 5:20 of the contest, the Lady Cats only scored 4 points but BH only put 2 in the same amount of time. So basically that was the ball game. Barber Hill manage to get within one at 41-40 with 1:48 on the clock. And despite the great defense being applied by the Eagles, the offense wasn't able to muster the points needed. Bay City hit two free throws making the final score 43-40. -
It should be a great game good luck Eagles!

Playoff Game with Dayton Set! Barbers Hill will play Dayton in the first round of the state playoffs. The contest will be Monday, Feb. 11th at Lee College. Game time is 7:30. -
Oldman, you're debating someone who has an inflated opinion of how good BH really was over the last few years. BH had SOME success since '99, but they really were only a modestly good team over that span. They gave a great effort in the playoff loss to Beaumont Central, and many were surprised that BH took them to the wire, but talent eventually won that game. BH followers should have been impressed with what Price and his staff brought to that game. The Kirbyville losses (at least ONE of them) could have gone either way. BH has not established themselves as a program (at least not yet) that has the personnel to be at or near the top of their district EVERY year, but somehow in the minds of these two armchair QBs they just can't believe it. Keep in mind, BHFAN and bh89-2 did not play football, but they are the "experts" behind the keyboard. If Price is a finalist for the Lake Travis job, which is an attractive job that many have applied for, then that speaks a high compliment for the man. Griff I don't know where you get your info. , but again you are dead wrong Myself and BH-89 Have played football unlike yourself! Just keep preaching on the radio and leave the discussions to us ;D You speak of having an inflated opinion of your team while you think WOS is going to state every year when in reality they can't get out of the region and probably never will ;D You know NOTHING about BH all someone had to do is read your last post!
-
Wow you guys are like a bunch of crying girls WAH WAH WAH ;D And all so tough with the name calling (Big behind the keyboard arent we) Why is it so impossible to understand someones want for there Team to go to the next level? This is a football thread not all sports, so we are discussing football! All other sports at BH do very well and are not part of this discussion. The fact is that BH has been out played in the playoffs! Back in 99 BH went to round three since then not even close! After playing a weak team in round one of the playoffs we get killed! This isn't about talent and you are blind if you think Kirbyville had better talent than BH the two years they were knocked out of the playoffs by them. The list goes on and on,but you super football genuises will beg to differ. Don't tell me about records either BH has played in the weakest 3A and 4A districts and 10-0 dont mean nothing! Do all of you "BH Supports" realy want to stay where we are or do you want to climb to the next level? I say after 9 years this program is going to stay where its at and to go to the next level then there needs to be a change. I for one do not want to be watching other teams in the playoffs after week 2 twenty years from now. Oh and GRIFF Bite me my by polar friend ;D

This is old news to some, but congrats to Kendall and Eagle 07!! Eagle pitcher inks with Angelina College By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published January 16, 2008 The success that Barbers Hill pitcher Kendall Thamm has enjoyed started in the spring of his freshman year — when he was cut in tryouts. Three years later, Thamm has signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Angelina College, where he will pitch. Thamm is one of four Eagle pitchers that will play college baseball. “Junior college was a better fit for me out of high school,†Thamm said. “I have only been pitching for two years and Angelina will help me develop as a pitcher. “I liked the coaching staff and coach Livin (Angelina coach Jeff Livin) has a real good pitching background. He pitched in the minor leagues and has coached several pro players, including Clay Buchholz.†Last season was a breakout year for Thamm as he posted a 12-2 record and a 1.69 earned run average while striking out 113 batters as the No. 2 pitcher in the rotation behind Texas A&M signee Ross Hales. The left-hander broke into the rotation after spending the previous season on the sophomore team. Thamm was named to the first team of the 21-4A All-District team following last season and was invited to play in the Greater Houston Junior All Star game at Rice University’s Reckling Park. “Kendall showed us he could pitch his sophomore year,†Barbers Hill head coach Gil Stalbaum said. “Since he was a left-hander we knew he could help us. Last year he refined his skills and really helped us. “I think getting cut motivated him to really improve and become a better athlete. That in turn, turned him into a better baseball player. He got bigger with hard work in the weight room.†The work paid off as Thamm began to turn it around during the summer leading up to his sophomore year. Word began to get back to Stalbaum about Thamm’s effectiveness. “Getting cut helped me realize that if I wanted to make it, I would have to put in a lot of work,†Thamm said. The Eagles went on to post a 26-8-1 record last season and advanced to the regional semifinals. With a wealth of talent returning, Barbers Hill is once again poised for a deep playoff run. Once again, Thamm will be one of those that Stalbaum leans on. “The main thing is I don’t want to worry about my numbers,†Thamm said. “I just want to keep my team in the game and give them a chance to win. “Looking back on last year, I was kind of surprised at everything that I accomplished. I’m looking forward to building on it this year.â€

Congrats To Chris!! By Michael Pineda Baytown Sun Published January 2, 2008 Since graduating from Barbers Hill in the spring of 2006, Chris Daniels has pursued a dream to play college football. It’s been an uphill battle for the three-year starting quarterback for the Eagles since he blew his knee out in the fourth game of his senior season against Diboll. The work came to fruition this winter when the United States Military Academy offered Daniels the chance to join the team and receive an education. “I am going to get a chance to play Division I football, which has always been a dream of mine and the education is considered to be at the same level as the Ivy League,†Daniels said. “The experience is one that you can’t get anywhere else.†To say Daniels’ road to West Point is the road less traveled would be something of an understatement. Daniels has attended two community colleges and spent a semester as a member of the football team at Universidad de Anahuac in Cancun, Mexico, working toward an opportunity to play football at the collegiate level. Working out in a church basement in Pittsburgh, Pa., and at a local high school, Daniels enlisted the help of his sister and brother who filmed his workouts. Since graduating from Barbers Hill, Daniels has grown to 6 feet, 212 pounds, up from the 185 pounds he graduated at. In rehabbing his knee, Daniels has maintained his speed in the forty running a 4.6. “There were some Ivy League schools that kept in touch and I sent them film last spring,†Daniels said. “They wanted to see more film this fall once I got up to speed with my knee. “West Point liked my film and invited me to watch them play Rutgers. It was about 28 degrees, raining and windy, but people stayed on their feet the whole time. “It is such a historic place and the facilities are top notch.†The visit to the academy was followed by an in-home visit. After weighing his options, the decision was a no-brainer for Daniels. “I know they are going to give me a shot at quarterback,†Daniels said. “When I was working out, I never thought I would get a shot to play quarterback because of the two-year layoff. “They have recruited four quarterbacks this year and if I wind up at defensive back, that is fine. I am still in the process of filling out some papers, but I have taken a physical and a fitness test. “The football team takes care of the recommendations from Congress, which is kind of a weird thing because they didn’t know whether to get one from Pennsylvania or Texas, because I have not been in Pennsylvania very long.†Ironically, one of the incoming quarterback recruits for Army is Lee senior Josh Jones, who committed to the Academy in the fall. During Daniels’ senior season at Barbers Hill, he was receiving looks from several universities, but a season-ending injury in the fourth game of the year cost him a shot at a scholarship. Looking to continue his career, Daniels, along with several Houston area high school football players, accepted an offer to play football for the Universidad de Anahuac in Cancun. Daniels saw action in one game before coming back to Texas. “They had just started the football program and tried to do too many things at once,†Daniels said. “It was underdeveloped and I left after one semester. “It’s one thing to go off to school and even more difficult to go to a school where they don’t speak your language.†When Daniels returned from Mexico, Bayer transferred his father to Pittsburgh. After finishing a semester at Lee College, Daniels moved with his family to Pittsburgh where he was considering walking on to the football teams at either Pittsburgh or Penn State. Daniels was attending the Community College of Allegheny County for a semester with the intention of enrolling at either university once he qualified for in-state tuition. Once Army made the offer, Daniels took into consideration not only football, but also life after football. “In high school I never showed a lot of interest in the service academies,†Daniels said. “Air Force had talked to coach Price (Barbers Hill coach Don Price), but it seemed like too much of a commitment. “But now I realize that it is a great opportunity. I probably won’t look at it as a four-year commitment. It is an honor to serve your country.â€
