BRIDGE CITY — What an exciting game the Deweyville Pirates and Bridge City Cardinals were a part of Tuesday night in Cardinal Gym.

Down 87-80 with 1:35 left in overtime, the Pirates went on a 9-0 run which ended with a last-second lay-up by Kevin Bland.

Bland put the ball up at the buzzer and had to wait for what felt an eternity for it to go throw as the Pirates walked away with a 89-87 victory.

Deweyville (3-0) got a three pointer from Caleb Jackson with 20.3 remaining in overtime to tie the score and used a Bridge City (1-2) turnover to set up the game winning shot.

“This was the greatest game I have ever coached in,†Deweyville Coach Brad Haeggquist said. “That was just awesome. Bridge City is just a fantastic organization and Coach (Tony) Knight is doing a great job with those kids. We were very fortunate to get out of here with the win.â€

Jackson led all scorers with 32 points, including six three pointers, while Bland finished the night with 26 points and 17 rebounds. Colby Caswell added 13 points.

Bridge City’s Jason Clark was also a high-performer Tuesday with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Clark scored the game’s first six points and had 14 points, four boards and two steals in the first period alone.

Adam Sanchez finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds for the Cardinals while Corey Smith added 17 points and six boards. Jaden Dillon finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Deweyville did not take its first lead until there was 54.3 remaining in the third period as Keeton Addison hit a shot making it 55-53 Pirates.

Bridge City closed the third off on a 8-0 spurt making it 61-55 Cardinals heading into an exciting fourth.

The Cardinals stretched the lead out as Dillon knocked home a three and two free throws giving Bridge City a 66-55 advantage early in the fourth.

Bridge City led 72-60 with 5:30 left in regulation only to see Deweyville go on a 13-0 run to take a 73-72 lead with 1:34 on the clock. Jackson had seven points in the run.

The Cardinals then went up 76-73 before Deweyville’s Ronnie Anglin hit a free throw and Jackson’s early dramatics.

Jackson nailed home a jumper with 11.4 left in regulation to tie the score at 76.

“I felt from the tip this was our game to win,†Knight said. “We missed too many free throws and lay ups tonight. Those are the drills our kids think are so boring.â€

The Cardinals finished 18-for-29 from the free throw line while the Pirates were 14-for-25.

Bridge City got off to a brilliant start in the first quarter behind the play of Clark.

The Cardinals took a 24-14 lead into the second period and added to it and led 28-14 early in the second.

Deweyville was able to close the gap as Bland scored 10 points in the frame and Caswell added seven points in the second period.

Bridge City took a 42-37 advantage into the break.

The Cardinals out-rebounded the Pirates 53-35 in the game.

Bridge City returns to action with a road trip today at Warren while Deweyville travels to Evadale Tuesday.
