They may have beat us BLUEDOVE3 but unlike you when you were a kid, our kids are not scared and love to play the game.
LOL... guys, no one thinks HJ was afraid to play. I posted that earlier. Why do you keep saying that?

None of the coaches from WOS think that HJ, Silsbee or BC are scared to play. Just calm down. Silsbee 88, the one thing you said though that I have to disagree with is your comment about the athletic ability of the silsbee 8th grade team over WOS. I saw the game this year up close and both teams are equally talented. The silsbee RB is very fast and broke off a long run, but that was about all they did offensively. The WOS RB is very fast as well. Realistically, both teams are evenly matched. Not trying to take anything away from silsbee, they are good, but so is WOS. I look for them to have some good battles over the next few years.
Did not mean to say that WOS has no talent or athletic ability, merely letting coldwater and 2010 know that Silsbee is not afraid of strapping up against them anytime or any place. But go back a year and look at how Silsbee dominated WOS in that game. Yes, WOS won this year and I too look forward to many year of well fought battles on the gridiron between these two teams.
Yes sir, I am fully aware of the beat down administered by Silsbee last year. All I will say is that there were some mistakes made last year that were not player related in that game last that have since been rectified. Last years game sould have been more like the one this year. Two equally talented teams battling it out with the winner being the one who played the best defense made the fewest mistakes. ;D
Gas, thanks for shedding a little light on the subject about scheduling. I thought the whole thing was a bit odd because there were other places to play. I guess the only folks who know how the whole conversations went were the coaches and we can't go back and change that. I just wish that the cancelled games could be made up so "ALL" the boys who have been affected could get the opportunity to play. I have enjoyed watching all the schools play this year, especially since we know a bunch of folks from other teams. It will really be fun when they get older. Look forward to some awesome games in the future. Rake1
Hey, no problem. And yes, it sucks for the kids the most because they work their butts off during the week looking forward to Thursday, then they don't get to experience the pay back. We prepared for BC then HJ in back to back weeks and then... nothing. Hopefully the preparation will help both teams for next year. At least we got to play BC once this year, really would have loved to play HJ.

I'm really interested to see how the Mustangs fare against this offense. It will be interesting. Also, Coldspring runs a similar version of offense, so this will be a good test. I also think that OF will play with intensity, I've never seen them play otherwise. They always play with heart.
Icewater, I have no idea which games you have been watching concerning the A teams?? Yes WOS is talented but they have been far from dominant. They beat Silsbee by a touchdown after Silsbee fumbled 5 times and they squeaked out a 6-0 win over BC in a pre district match up. I agree they are good but the statements about nobody wanting to play them is more than a little off base. The BC game that got cancelled was a mystery? I understand the Varsity rules in situations like this, especially concerning possibly messing up the fields any more than they were. Bridge City's field was wreck to say the least so instead of playing there while the Freshman and JV went to the middle school campus the 7th and 8th grades got left out. Why couldn't they play at Dan Hooks stadium? I know 7th and 8th graders wouldn't mess the field up nearly as bad as the bigger guys? Or even better, the JV and Freshman should have played at Hooks Stadium and the middle schools should have played at East Campus leaving the field at BC ready for the varsity. JMHO. As far as playing the 8th grade A team, I'm sure both BC and HJ would line up in the Wal Mart parking lot and play WOS if they would let them, no fear from either school.
Rake, couple of things... first, that was not Icewater posting that, I guarantee you. I know him and that is not something he would say. I have a sneaking suspicion that it may be some kids posting under his account. I'm going to let him know about this. Second, we offered to play the Jr High games on our practice field. It would have been perfect, but that offer was turned down. I'm not going to point fingers at who did what, but he offer was made. We wanted to play!

JV Players Dressing out on Varsity
Gasilla replied to fwstangs's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
We have always done it since I have been close to the program, last 10 years. But the other day some Dad was saying it was not legal and he did not know how we were getting away with it, pointing out that two kids who played JV were not dressed for the varsity as they have in the past. Even though there were two other JV kids dressed out who played JV. Is there any rule? I looked and of course found nothing saying it was wrong. Others thoughts and knowledge?
They can't pay for the JV then play for the varsity in the same week. However, our JV did not play this week. So they were OK to play this week. -

Does Coldspring still run the Single Wing offense? -
I thought, for the most part, the sportsmanship was pretty good from HJ as well. Except after their first TD when the lineman (I think it was #62) walked towards our stands pointing at the scoreboard. And in the second half, when one of the HJ DB's put a good lick on our RB and he jumped up walking toward our side line beating his chest. Other than that, I saw some patting on the heads and such so overall I was pleased with HJ's sportsmanship too... ;D

They will not be challenged again until they start the playoffs. This may be a good thing for Jasper...
People mistakenly think the only way that you are good at what you do is being recognized as being the "best". Striving to do your best is all anyone really can do and then let the chips fall where they may. Recognition sometimes is overrated in that context. Being recognized by your peers as the "best" should be an honor to be appreciated.
Well said, and I agree with that 100%. I usually stay out of all of the "this guy is better than that one" type of threads. But, CT holds a special place with me and many others. Naturally, I am going to jump to his defense. At the end of the day, all that really matters is what you just said. Good post. And I'm pretty sure that Cornel, himself, would say the same thing. ;)

I mean if you beat someone 48-0 it is not the same as 14-0. Most of the time a lesser team will score on your back ups late in a game. It happens all the time when you see a 48-6 game. I would have to see the scores of every game and the opponents of these games for shut outs to factor in. I mean if Coach Johnston shuts out Jasper and West Hardin , these are not the same. No more than Coach Thompson shutting out Jasper and Hampshire Fannett. I believe if you are comparing DC's that you would have to measure on State Championships only.
You WT proponents brought up shut outs, not me. But, I disagree with you. I think over 122 games, points wash due to the law of large numbers. Also, you can't measure State Championships because it takes more than defense to win a title. It takes defense, offense and special teams. So no, that's not a good measuring stick. I've seen teams with NO defense win titles because their offenses were just that good. In 2000, we went to the title game in 4A and our offense was terrible. But, if you think in the terms you are, you would say that we had the second best offense in the state... LOL Ask anyone who saw our offense that year and ask them if we had the second best... ;)
Most special teams are your defensive starters (if you're smart). If the other team doesn't score as much as you, you win. Bottom line.
LOL...

WT wasn't defensive coordinator in '98 when Newton won the title over Daingerfield. Johnny "Squat Low" Westbrook was and had been for many years. When he retired WT became DC. I like WT and he is a fine coach. I think his tutelage by Lidney Thompson probably helped some, but I'm not too sure he would come back to Newton if given a chance. Hopefully he will. He has a way of motivating kids to play for him.
Dang BooBoo do you ever get a fact right?????
I don't have to, I'm not on Jeopardy. :D
Champ, he wasn't refering to you. ;D

Yes WOS likely would have won, but who cares!!!! Why risk the threat of bad weather and injury. I am sure that for the WOS folks that think that this was all HJ's fault you will look to take it out on poor ol' little HJ on the field tonight!!!! ::) ::)
I think WOS will just be happy to get the win. Jr high boys have plenty of games ahead of them. I think everyone has said their piece on the matter, it's a mute point from here as far as I'm concerned.
I'm a Kirbyville fan and homer? LOL! I'm from Orange County and now live in Lumberton, I don't have a side in this, unlike you. For the record, can you tell me what the final score was in the 2000 state title game against Ennis? Do you care to reflect? What about last years game with Gilmer? The "best DC's ever" as you would like me to believe, do it when it counts, not playing the Orangefields, Bridge City's, HJ's, Hampshire's, and Kirbyville's. WOS has fallen on bad times when shutting these people out, and beating a 2A team is room for boasting. Who would have thought the once mighty WOS that had great teams in the 80's and 90's would have to resort to beating 2A and 3a teams for a measuring stick. Truely sad. WT did it in Newton for several years beating 3A and 4A schools, then going through the playoffs with a much smaller enrollment than their opponents. Like I said earlier, the last 10 years it hasn't even been close as to who has been more successful. I guess you also want me to believe that Dan Ray is a better coach than Coach Barbay too. To wosmustangs :'( Show me how I disrespected the names of all the legendary SE Texas coaches by saying WT is a better DC than your beloved Cornel. I never mentioned their names, you did show some good history though :o. I hold most of those guys in high regard actually, along with Willie Ray Smith, Les Koening, Roy Harper, Gene Wakoviak, and Ed Peveto. Because I don't think Cornel is the best DC in SE Texas don't mean I disrepect anyone, so go cry me a river..... I guess you can save the tears for another early playoff exit though.
Let me say first that my problem with bebo is, in no way, intended to disrespect WT or Curtis Barbay. They are great coaches and are, no doubt, some of the best coaches around. Bebo, careful what you ask for, you are going to make me do some digging, you are not going to like what I find, you should have just left it alone, but we are going to take a look at your last 10 years... I will be back, bank on it. ;)
Your right! Newton won state in 1998 shutting out a very good Dangerfield team 21-0. That was in 3A. Don't forget the other 2 state title games Newton has gone to sinc then in 2A. They lost one, and won one. Thats 3 state title games since WOS has sniffed the ultimate game, and 2 state championships since WOS has won their last in 1987 (can you remember that far back?).
If your going to argue a point with me, at least try to be right about SOMETHING. You've been wrong on everything you've posted and this one is no different. WOS went to the state title game in 2000 genius.
What has WOS done in 3A, the past 6 years other than embarrass a once proud name.
That name must not be to embarassing since most of you Kirbyville fans marquis game this season was a 1 point loss to that team. Heck, you guys are still talking about that and it's what? A month old?
WOS was one of the more dominant teams in 4A for a long period of time, and when they dropped to 3A were expected to have a strangle hold on the state titles. WRONG!
The only people who thought we were going to have a hold on titles are people like you. As for being dominant, I think that speaks for itself. We've been in 3A since 04 and we lost our first district game this year. I would say that's pretty dominant.
Have they even made it to the semi's? Thats pretty sad!
Wrong again! We went to the semi's in 2005.
Also, please give me some factual info, out of a newspaper if you want me to believe you. Don't just come out and throw out numbers.
When you start giving me something founded in reality, I will do the same.
WT has also done it everwhere he has been.
Everywhere he has been? Where has he been a DC other than Newton?
Again, look at when Cornel left to "greener" pastures. Palestein, failure. Huntsville, major failure. Only at WOS can he claim success. And if he can't dominate at a 3A level with the talent that he coaches, and shut much weaker teams out with the much ballyhooed "chain gang" defense then something would be terribly wrong. Its truely sad that WOS was the talk of Texas as a 5A and 4A power, but can't match the success against much lesser, weaker competition.
You keep bringing up Palestine, is it that hard for you to understand? He was not the DC at Palestine. I think some of you are having a problem with reading comprehension. The topic is who is the best DC. Get it? DC! Cornel was not the DC at Palestine. He was the DC at Hunstville for one year of which they had the best season they had in several seasons. He came back to WOS because he loves it, he loves the people of Orange and he loves DRH. As for domination. As for not having the success we had in 4A, well, we did not make the playoffs in 01, 02 and 03. The last 3 years we were in 4A. We have not missed them since dropping. I think that is far exceeding the success we were having.
Can one of the WOS homers, clarify why Cornel thought Adrian Peterson wasn't good enough to play tailback for him at Palestein? I always wanted to know that. Thats a pretty good reason as to why he couldn't cut the mustard there.
Because AD did not want to be a team player and follow team rules. That will not "cut the mustard" with cornel no matter how big a "star" you are.
