Hard to argue with this, I forgot about the Alvin ISD connection with the girls AD. A quick look at MaxPreps will show BH routinely beating 6A schools for a number of years, so "needing" a coach with 6A experience doesn't hold water. The reality is that Chambers County (really East Harris too) and farther east to the Beaumont area are on an island when it comes to VB club options; especially when compared to the majority of the larger Houston Metro area. That is why getting a coach that had shown a track record of achieving, even with lesser talent, would have moved the needle a lot more.

GCM was not in a super weak district while Veen was there. For a number of years that district contained the always strong Friendswood team and an extremely competitive Santa Fe team. Years before that were against Summer Creek and Kingwood (better than todays KW). It is very plausible to say that GCM had MUCH more competitive district draws than BH.

If Alvin didn't have many club players then how much coaching up of non-club players actually happened? Based on the record, it wasn't much. To say that win loss record is not an accurate indicator of success is just not true. Not saying teams lacking club players can become world beaters, but they can be more competitive than AHS's record would indicate. The idea that any 6A coach is better than a 5A, 4A, etc... is also not very accurate. This hire just strikes me as a scramble because BH was turned down a handful of times and maybe overestimated their aura. Lastly, say what you want about Veen (and there is a lot), but the teams that GCM fielded when Veen (nee Mulryan) was the coach were much more successful than what Alvin has put up in the past number of years.

Heard it was the former coach at AHS.

Word is that the job has been filled and the replacement is coming from Alvin HS. A step up for that coach, but not sure if it is for the BH VB program. In 3 years of running the AHS program the overall record was 38-78 with a win percentage of just about 33% and only reaching the playoffs once. Not sure what happened with this coach search, but on face value this is very underwhelming. Either BH was not very flexible with the expected duties of a 6A head VB coach and were turned down by multiple targets or not much effort was put into the search.

Still no hire. Maybe BH isn't ready for 6A VB yet.

Jumped or pushed…semantics I guess.

Back to Livingston. Tried for other openings, but the Lions were the only takers. Oh well, I guess someone could hear the clock ticking to midnight. BH will still have VB talent, so it will be interesting to see if they get a serious coach.

Barbers Hill District Champs, Again!

Player talent is and has been there, that's not the issue. The issue has been cakewalk districts where minimal coaching was required, basically sleepwalking, until playoffs....and we have seen what happens there. -

With BH more than likely going up to 6A, it appears that the window on any meaningful playoff runs could be closed. I would definately say their history of outright dominating their own district is done. Just wasting VB talent for years. -
CS is a terrible draw for BH. The Eagles will have to play their best to beat CS.

Should be a quick match. Angelton struggled quite a bit against common opponents that BH dominated. Only hope for Angleton is if BH is looking ahead to College Station.

Anyone attending the JTC this year?

The 2nd half of last night's game made it look like BH had never played against a 2/3 zone before. Overall, it was a very good season, but it was a tough loss to end it.
-
Agreed. Honestly, BH missed a lot of open and easy shots too. It could have easily been a 30+ point win.

I guess sarcasm doesn't come across that well on message boards.
-
Is it a requirement listed in the job posting?

I thought the Chronicle number for Asbeck was around 175-180. I would think the current salary range being discussed would be a minimum of 200.
-
If that number is true then that's just sad. It's the ultimate in daddy ball....undeserved daddy ball at that.

It wasn't too hard to see when 1) having an understanding of VB more than Wins/Losses and 2) watching the actual matches. BH's record at the end of this year was really misleading, they started off not great against mostly decent teams (a couple good teams too), but they also struggled against teams they shouldn't have. That got masked once they hit district. Most fans don't know too much about VB unless they have/had a sister, daughter, or niece play, so they get tricked by that inflated win/loss record. Most also don't get that the majority of skill comes from club ball and BH's girls are not getting any additional refinement from the schools program. That is evident in the playoffs and against comparable teams. BH players can only out talent other teams so much, eventually their coaching needs to catch up to help those girls out.

SSDY - Same “Stuff” Different Year(s). Two teams with equivalent talent but big differences in coaching. Seems that a pattern is building at BH VB.

Friendswood has a clear path to State in D2. BH will be lucky to get past A&M Consol in the second round. Will have to play their best match of the year to do it.
-
Looks like BH's bi district could be a layup, but the prospect of playin A&M Consol in the 2nd round will be a tough draw.
-
The new playoff format waters down the post season to an amazing degree. BH is unbelievable fortunate that Friendswood would be in D2, I doubt it would be a repeat of last year.

Understand that Iola is a 2A champ and that BH is young, but BH should have beaten them in the first match and they did the second time they played them (should have been in two instead of three though). Two seasons ago you had a team just as young beat the eventual 6A champ Dripping Springs in non-district. Is this current team as talented as the previous, not sure...probably not, but you shouldn't be seeing this big of a drop off with a group that is also filled with club players. The talent it still there, just not seeing the execution. Just like football, the jimmy's and joe's still need to be put in the right place. Anyways, they should beat Clear Lake by a good amount. If this match is close....then....
