Kingwood finds a way Mustangs turn up pressure to secure win over DeLaSalle Kingwood coach Royce Huseman knew his Mustangs would be in for a physical contest against DeLaSalle on Thursday night. And for a good part of the game, the visitors from Minneapolis confirmed Huseman's scouting report. But a couple of adjustments, combined with a 10-1 fourth-quarter run, allowed Kingwood to come out of the Campbell Center with a 41-30 victory over the Islanders during the opening day of the Houston vs. The Nation Tournament, improving the Mustangs to 9-3. "We knew they were a mirror image of how we play," said Huseman, whose team will play Seven Lakes today at 1:30 p.m.. "They're a very strong team defensively, but we were able to change some things and pull away from them." Perhaps the biggest adjustment Kingwood made was bringing a relentless wave of double and triple teams on DeLaSalle junior post Royce White, who scored 14 first-half points with an array of inside moves. The Mustangs smothered the 6-7 White in the second half, holding him to just four points on 1-for-7 shooting. Having struggled with turnovers in the first half, Kingwood turned a tight 17-16 halftime lead into a 25-20 cushion entering the fourth quarter. The Mustangs held the Islanders (0-3) scoreless for the first 6:04 of the quarter as Kingwood began to use its depth to its advantage. DeLaSalle, which has won three state titles under coach Dave Thorson, closed the margin to 31-29 on a basket from Jalen Jaspers with 3:29 remaining. It would be as close as the Islanders would get, as Kingwood then ripped off 10 straight points. Robert Foran and Hunter Martin each scored four points. Tevin Svihovec had a team-high 13 points for Kingwood, which shot 55 percent from the field in the second half. DeLaSalle will play Wheatley today at 6 p.m. In other games • Smiley 74, Seven Lakes 58 — Augustine Rubbit scored 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Smiley outscored Seven Lakes 21-9 in the second quarter to cruise to a victory that improved its record to 11-4. Jonathan Simmons had 14 points and Benny Easter had 12 for the Eagles, who will play Kingwood Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Brandon Provost scored 25 for Seven Lakes (12-5), including seven 3-pointers. Jimmy Abraham added 12 for the Spartans, who take on Kingwood today at 1:30 p.m. • Hastings 76, Aldine 62 — Chris Iles scored 12 of his 19 points in the first half as Hastings rolled past Aldine. Lionel Foster added 15 points and Ja'Darius Davis chipped in 11 for Hastings (12-3), which led by as much as 22 points in the second half. Brandon Williams had 17 for Aldine (12-4), which will play Bellaire at 9 a.m. Saturday. Hastings will play Bellaire today at noon.

Orangefield 64, Liberty 51 The Bobcats (13-4) got off to a very slow start against the Panthers (6-5) and used a strong fourth period to pull away to win 64-51. Orangefield led just 38-35 heading into the fourth before outscoring Liberty 26-16 in the game’s final eight minutes. Zach Hayes led the way for the Bobcats with 18 points to go with six rebounds while Jeremy Granger added 15 points and a game-high eight rebounds. The Bobcats appeared sluggish in the first half allowing the Panthers to collect rebound after rebound as Orangefield also turned the ball over nine times in the first two periods. “We gave them nine turnovers and about 11 offensive rebounds, that is 20 extra shots,†Orangefield Coach Rea Wrinkle said. “We have to start blocking out. Rebounding is all about effort and we just were not giving it.†The Bobcats outscored the Panthers 41-30 while ending up with a 28-21 rebounding advantage in the contest. Jeremiah Brown had 12 points for the Panthers while Edwin Hardy added 17 points in the loss. Tyler Angelle put in seven points for the Bobcats while Jared Helton and Devin Green each finished with six points.
