Nederland, West Orange-Stark and Little Cypress-Mauriceville boys travel to Barber’s Hill for the Gulf Coast Classic, while Memorial, Port Neches-Groves and Nederland girls will all play in the Lady Eagles Tournament, which is also in Barber’s Hill. Also starting today is the Bridge City Tournament where local teams such as Vidor and Orangefield will join Bridge City in a six-team bracket. Bridge City’s tournament will start with pool play today and then go into a regular bracket format on Friday. Orangefield and Buna will meet at 9 a.m. today. The Cardinals will host Shepherd at 10:30 a.m. and Vidor will play Shepherd at 1:30 p.m. Later in the afternoon, Orangefield will meet Liberty at 3 p.m. and Vidor and Bridge City will square off at 4:30. Friday’s action will start at 9 a.m. with the championship game slated to start at 12 p.m. In the Gulf Coast Classic, Nederland (9-7 overall and 1-1 in District 22-4A) will take on Cleveland at 1:30 p.m today in the Auxiliary Gym. If the Bulldogs win today, they will in the Competition Gym and if they lose, they will play in the Auxiliary Gym. Nederland head coach Brian English said the tournament looks evenly matched and doesn’t seem to have any teams that should run away with the competition. “Whoever gets over Christmas Dinner the fastest will be in the best shape,†English said. We’re (for the season) about where we thought we would be. I felt pretty good about our last game-and-a-half or so but I think we are playing pretty well right now.†The Gulf Coast Classic will continue through Saturday. The girls, meanwhile, will start at 9 a.m. today when Spring plays LaMarque and Mayde Creek meets Baytown Sterling. There are a total of 16 teams, including area squads such as LC-M, Vidor, Lumberton, PN-G, Nederland, West Brook and Memorial. Eddie Sutton to coach San Francisco Sutton to replace Evans as San Francisco's coach for rest of season ESPN.com news services Updated: December 26, 2007, 5:48 PM ET Eddie Sutton is going to get another shot at his 800th victory. The former Oklahoma State coach will come out of retirement to coach San Francisco for the remainder of the season in an attempt to win his 800th game. Sutton's return was first reported by CBS Sports.com Current Dons coach Jessie Evans will announce his resignation as coach later Wednesday, The Associated Press is reporting. ESPN.com was told that Evans was informed Wednesday morning he could either resign or would be terminated with cause by the end of the day. But a source close to Evans said the coach wasn't given a reason for being ousted. Sutton's 798 wins at Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Kentucky and Creighton are the fifth-highest total for any men's NCAA Division I basketball coach. When his victories at Tulsa Central High School and the College of Southern Idaho are included, he won exactly 1,000 games before retiring from coaching in May 2006. Sutton pleaded no contest to misdemeanor aggravated drunken driving and two other charges following a February 2006 car accident that prematurely ended his time on the sidelines. San Francisco has lost five of its last six games in addition to the NCAA suspension of one of its international players. Evans is in his fourth season at USF, which is 4-8 this year. He was hired from Louisiana-Lafayette in April 2004 to replace fired coach Phil Mathews. This month, the NCAA suspended Dons senior forward Vince Polakovic for 24 games stemming from his participation with a German national team in 2004. The school said at the time that several members from the German national team received stipends deemed by the NCAA "above actual and necessary expenses." San Francisco contended that Polakovic wasn't among those players who received payments and said it would appeal the suspension. Evans coached on Lute Olson's staff at Arizona from 1988-97 and also worked as an assistant at Minnesota, Texas, Wyoming, and San Diego State before joining the Arizona staff. He helped lead the Wildcats to a 25-9 record and a national title in his ninth and final season with Arizona. Former Purdue coach Gene Keady, who interviewed for the San Francisco job twice while he was still the head coach of the Boilermakers, said Wednesday he hasn't talked to Sutton about the job. Keady interviewed at the time with Bill Hogan, the former USF athletic director who is now at Seattle University. "I know he misses coaching but I don't know why he'd want to do that," Keady told ESPN.com. "He doesn't like losing, and just wait until he tries to buy a house." Information from ESPN.com senior writer Andy Katz, ESPN Radio's Doug Gottlieb and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Cougars crash Barbers Hill party By Dave Rogers Published December 22, 2007 MONT BELVIEU — Finally, Justin Reese and his Crosby Cougar basketball team have some payoff for all the hard work. The Cougars came out firing Friday night and hung tough at the end to take a 56-50 win over Barbers Hill in a District 21-4A showdown played before a rowdy crowd at Barbers Hill’s Fieldhouse. “I thought it was important for us to come out and play well early to get our confidence up,†said Reese, the first-year head coach at Crosby. “We’ve played well lately, but it hasn’t translated to the win column.†Friday’s win, fueled by Kendrae Carter’s 18 points and 17 by B.J. Jacobs, upped Crosby’s record to 5-10 for the season, 1-1 in district. Barbers Hill fell to 10-5, 1-1, despite a team-high 17 points from Ian Hamlin. Both teams are off until next Thursday, when they open play in the Gulf Coast Classic tournament at Barbers Hill. For the Eagles and their coach Nathan Toon, that’s a long time to think about Friday’s game. “I never felt good in this game,†he admitted when it was over. “I never felt our intensity on defense was where we needed it to be. “We pride ourselves on playing good defense, but we were far from it tonight. We weren’t ready to play.†t was over. “I never felt our intensity on defense was where we needed it to be. “We pride ourselves on playing good defense, but we were far from it tonight. We weren’t ready to play.†Crosby jumped out to a 22-14 lead after the first quarter, thanks to 11 points from Carter, who led a wild 3-point shooting display in the first eight minutes with three treys. Cougar players were 6 for 6 on 3-pointers in the period, with M.J. Mathis, Elijah Chambers and Jacobs getting into the act. Barbers Hill answered with three 3-pointers, two by Colby Henscley, and was 3 for 6 beyond the arc in the opening period. But Crosby’s Carter was whistled for back-to-back offensive fouls early in the second period and spent the final six minutes of the half on the bench. Overall, Crosby was whistled for 22 fouls in the game, compared to 14 for the homestanding Eagles. Barbers Hill was in the bonus for the final 11 minutes of the game due to excess fouls called against the Cougars. Without Carter to contend with, the Eagles closed the gap on the Cougars to four, 32-28, at the half and two points, 39-37, after three quarters. Reese was thankful for the contribution of Jacobs and his mates. Matt Guillory finished with eight points and Mathis with six for the Cougars. “B.J. Jacobs had some big shots for us,†said the Crosby coach. Barbers Hill actually grabbed its first lead at 37-36 with 20 seconds left in the third period on Richard Minnick’s cut through the lane and Henscey’s feed. But Jacobs answered with a 3-pointer for the Cougars to end the period. Barbers Hill took a 48-47 lead with 2:14 remaining on another layup by Minnick. Jacobs again had the counter, hitting a jumper from 12 feet. The Cougars managed to hang onto the lead the remainder of the way, thanks to some free throw shooting of their own. They hit 5 of 7 down the stretch. Barbers Hill's junior varsity scored a 48-40 win over Crosby in the undercard. Mitchell Hooper and Austin Crawley each had 14 points for the Eagles while Chris Godfrey led the Crosby JV with 19 points.

Big 12 reprimands Tech's Knight for comment on officiating LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Texas Tech coach Bob Knight was reprimanded by the Big 12 for comments he made about officiating after a loss to New Mexico earlier this month. The reprimand, issued Monday, resulted from Knight's arguing about Lobos freshman Dairese Gary's one-handed 47-footer at the halftime buzzer in New Mexico's 80-63 victory Dec. 15. Knight didn't think Gary released the shot in time. "I thought it was a horrendous call," Knight said after the game. Knight's comment violated the Big 12's sportsmanship code, which prohibits public comments about officiating, the conference said in a statement. Knight and his spokesman couldn't immediately be reached Wednesday. The Big 12 reviews officials' performances, including the accuracy of judgment calls, and coaches are given the opportunity to provide input, the Big 12 said. The season-long evaluation determines whether officials get future assignments in the conference. New Mexico's win was the second for Lobos coach Steve Alford against Knight, his coach at Indiana.
