  6. A&M's Carter withdraws name from NBA draft Aggies leading scorer to return for senior season Texas A&M leading scorer Josh Carter has decided to withdraw his name from consideration for next month's NBA Draft and will return to school for his senior season. Carter, a 6-foot-7 swingman for the Aggies, averaged 12.2 points on the way to a second straight honorable mention All-Big 12 season this past year. Carter stunned many last month when he announced he was making himself available for the draft. It was suspected all along that he was on a fact-finding mission because NCAA guidelines allow players to workout for teams and talk with NBA officials as long as they do not hire an agent. "I decided to take my name out of the draft and concentrate on my senior season," Carter said. "I'm not worried about the NBA right now. I know I have a lot to improve on and will have another shot at the draft next year." There still has been no official word on whether freshman center DeAndre Jordan will remain in the draft. Most predict the 7-foot Houston product will be a Top 10 selection, which likely means his collegiate career is over after one year.
  7. Memorial is set to retire LeBlanc’s No. 12 jersey The Port Arthur News Port Arthur Memorial graduate ReShonta LeBlanc will have her No. 12 jersey retired at the school’s spring athletic banquet at 6 tonight in the high school cafeteria. LeBlanc graduated from Memorial in 2004. After a stellar high school basketball career with the Lady Titans, where she averaged 14.5 points, six boards, 4.6 steals and 2.3 steals per game her senior year, LeBlanc moved onto play at Louisiana State University from 2004 through this last season. LeBlanc, as a senior, played nearly 30 minutes per game for LSU this past season. She averaged 6.3 points per game and led her team with 78 steals, aiding the Lady Tigers to a Final Four berth. Tennessee, the eventual National Champions, ended LSU's season, however. With their Final Four run and 31-6 overall record, the Lady Tigers also finished the season ranked No. 4 in the country. "She made my job easy," said Lady Titans head coach Joe Fonteneaux, who coached LeBlanc during her final season at Memorial. "She was able to handle the offense. She played great defense. She could score and defend and made her teammates better. “She could take games over when she needed too. She was basically a coach on the floor and that really made my job a lot easier." LeBlanc, a first cousin of football star Jamaal Charles, is the first athlete in school history to have a jersey retired. While Charles has yet to have a formal ceremony to honor the retirement of his jersey, it is understood that the No. 4 football jersey is off limits. After tonight, No. 12 will officially be off limits to any future Lady Titans' basketball players. "It is such a wonderful thing. I'm so happy and excited," LeBlanc said. "It's a wonderful honor that they would do this for me. I appreciate Coach Fonteneaux' hard work to get this done for me. “Just for being a girl in Port Arthur and to be recognized like this, it's definitely an honor that I will always appreciate." LeBlanc said the Minnesota Lynx, a franchise of the WNBA, invited her to a tryout before the start of the WNBA season. LeBlanc, who just graduated from LSU on Friday, declined so she could finish out the semester. LeBlanc added she will be going overseas to play ball and hopes to get another invitation to tryout with any WNBA team by next season. Below is a list of accolades LeBlanc accumulated while at Thomas Jefferson, where she spent her first two seasons, and at Memorial. • 2000-2001 (Thomas Jefferson) Freshman newcomer-of-the-year 20-4A First team All-District 20-4A

  13. McDaniel ready to lead Pirate charges Van Wade The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — Ready to make a his mark in a new part of Texas, Russell McDaniel is excited to guide the Deweyville athletic program. McDaniel was recently named the Athletic Director and head football coach at Deweyville High School this past week and he’s ready to get the ball rolling. He will replace Dwight Bickham, who was the AD the last three seasons. Bickham stepped down to spend more time with his family. “I’m so excited to be here,†said McDaniel. “Everyone has been so friendly and it looks to be a tremendous environment with tremendous kids to work with it. I love the small-school atmosphere. I always have and Deweyville is an ideal place for me to be.†McDaniel, 42, was the AD at New Diana High School the last six seasons. During that span, the Eagles played in a tough district and posted a 35-28 record, including three playoff trips. The Eagles’ best mark under McDaniel came in 2005 when they went 9-2. McDaniel has been involved in coaching for 19 years and spent 13 years honing his skills at Kaufman High School as well. “New Diana was a teriffic place to coach,†said McDaniel, who graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School and Southeatern Oklahoma State. “My family and I will always feel like part of the family there. We felt like it was time for a change. Our son graduated last year and my wife and I kinda had empty-nest syndrome and we wanted to experience something new but we wanted to remain in a small-school atmosphere and Deweyville was perfect for us.†McDaniel and his wife Kim have a daughter Kim that is playing college basketball at a small college in Jackson, Miss. Their son Terry (6-7, 330) will be playing football at Texas Tech University as a freshman. One of the first things that impressed McDaniel on his first visit to Pirate Country were the facilities and the almost brand new high school and athletic complex. “The facilities are really top-notch,†said McDaniel. “All of the kids can take a lot of pride in that. I know it took a lot of effort from a lot of folks. We did the same kind of thing in New Diana with new baseball and softball fields not too long ago. The Deweyville community should be very proud of the facilities their kids can take advantage of.†McDaniel is ready to rally around all of the sports teams. “At New Diana, the kids were very competitive in everything,†said McDaniel. “We had one of the better 2A baseball programs around. I really would love for the Pirates to be strong in everything and the kids can play anything they want to play.†The Pirates were extremely competitive on the gridiron in Bickham’s three-year stint. Deweyville went 18-13 during that span and made the playoffs as the third-place unit in both 2005 and 2006 out of District 24-2A. It had been since 1996 since the program had made the postseason. The Pirates slipped to 4-6 last season, 0-6 in 24-2A plays. Deweyville was competitive in district play and lost several close 24-2A affairs. “Coach Bickham did a wonderful job to get the football program back on track,†McDaniel said. “The district is so competitive so that says a lot about the competitiveness of the kids. I’m looking forward to working wit˙ all of them.†Deweyville remains the smallest “kid†on the block in 24-2A in a district that features schools like Anahuac, Buna, Hardin and Kountze that have bounced from the 3A to the 2A ranks in recent years. “That whole number thing doesn’t bother me a whole lot,†McDaniel said. “When I was at Kaufman (now a 3A school), we were 4A and playing state-caliber teams like Ennis and Corsicana every year and we competed very well. It doesn’t bother me whether you suit up 60 or suit up 25, you’re only putting 11 out there at a time and I’ve seen plenty of smaller schools have success against larger ones.†McDaniel feels the Pirates can compete very well in 24-2A. “In recent years, it seems like East Chambers has been the top dogs, but everyone else has been pretty even,†said McDaniel. “I know Southeast Texas has an excellent brand of football and I’m glad I’ll have a chance to see what it’s all about.†McDaniel can’t wait to get to those warm das in August. “The only thing I’m really getting use to is the humidity,†said McDaniel. “It’s funny, you take a shower and when you get out, you’re already sweating again and drying off. I’m really excited about being here and getting to know everyone as fast as possible. It feels like I’m getting here a little late, so I would like to meet as many folks as I can. It’s an opportunity I’m definitely looking forward too.â€
