  3. Sabine Pass Sharks The Sabine Pass Sharks enter their 3rd year back competing in UIL football in 2008. They have struggled since moving back, posting a 4-12 record in those 2 seasons. They have been a part of a tough 1A district with battles with West Hardin, Hull-Daisetta, Evadale and High Island. Add 3 new teams to the district in Burkeville, Colmesneil and Chester and the road to the playoffs will be much tougher in the new 23-1A. Coach Jason Thibodeaux has 14 total starters back that will try to bring the Sharks into playoff contention in 2008. Key Wins Last Year Beaumont Legacy (12-6) Last Year’s Scores Sabine Pass 12 Beaumont Legacy 6 Galveston O’Connell 30 Sabine Pass 13 Chester 44 Sabine Pass 6 Burkeville 51 Sabine Pass 8 West Hardin 37 Sabine Pass 0 Hull-Daisetta 40 Sabine Pass 6 High Island 41 Sabine Pass 20 Evadale 42 Sabine Pass 18 Offense Sabine Pass has 7 starters back from an offensive unit that averaged 10 points per game in 2007. RB Brad Berg will lead the Shark rushing attack in 2008. Drew Carlos will call the signals at QB and will have Danzel Jones and Josh James as his go to guys at WR. Leading the way on the line will be Jimmy Conkle, Drew Pierce and Othello Edwards. Other Key Players Frankie Flores (TE) Defense The Sharks also have 7 defensive starters back from last year’s team that allowed 36 points per game. The top returning tackler for Sabine Pass is DE Logan Peltier. Last season Peltier came away with 45 tackles. The Sharks should be pretty solid in the secondary with CB Ryan Nguyen and CB Justin Nguyen leading the way. Look for the LB group to be tough as well with David Uher and Hunter Cruthirds. Other Key Players Trevor McNeil (DE) Sabine Pass will have just one non-district game in 2008. They will travel to Galveston O’Connell on September 5. The Sharks open 23-1A play on September 26 at Evadale. The regular season finale will pit the Sharks against rival High Island. 4. Hamerly to head up Deweyville basketball Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader DEWEYVILLE — It is not too often a coach brings national championship experience to a local school. Melanie Hamerly is doing just that with the Deweyville Lady Pirates basketball program. Hamerly, a national champion with Baylor in 2005, has taken the position after Kristi Henderson left the program after last season. The Lady Pirates finished fourth in District 24-2A last year after reaching the playoffs the year before after finishing in third. Hamerly spent the last two seasons at Waco High School as an assistant coach and had a desire to come back home. “I missed home so much,†Hamerly, a 2001 graduate of LC-M High School, said. “I was ready to be back in a small community where the people really support the girls athletics program.†Hamerly now hopes to bring her qualities as a fundamental basketball player to the Deweyville courts. “I want us to start making the playoffs each year,†Hamerly added. “There are six seniors back this year. I was a senior once and I know how important it is to make the playoffs in your final year. I want to be a part of these girls making some memories. “I have only met two of the girls so far because the last few weeks have been crazy trying to get back moved into home. They were very polite and ready to work. They already wanted to know what they could do to get ready for the season. They are the ones who mentioned holding an open gym on Wednesday night and I will get to meet the rest of the players.†Hamerly started to look at getting back into the Southeast Texas area at the end of the school year last year. A position opened at Mauriceville Middle School where Hamerly’s mother works. Hamerly then got word of the opening at Deweyville and principal Jerry Gibson made contact with the 2006 graduate of Baylor University. “I was going to try to do anything to get there,†Hamerly said. “I set up an interview the next day and liked what they had to say. I got to see the facilities and the classrooms and I fell in love with the school. it is a blessing to be here and I am glad I was given the opportunity.â€

  7. 2 Texas High Schoolers Test Positive for Steroids DALLAS (AP) - Only two high school athletes were caught taking unauthorized substances in the nation's largest steroids testing program that screened more than 10,000 students, according to results released by the state Wednesday. Athletes tested played sports ranging from football to women's golf, and the results renewed criticism about the two-year $6 million program approved by lawmakers last year. The students weren't identified by name, school or sport. Documents obtained by The Associated Press showed that a senior tested positive for the anabolic steroid boldenone, and a 10th grader was found using a steroid called methylandrostandiol. Four tests came back unresolved and three students refused to be tested, according to figures released by the University Interscholastic League. One athlete left the testing area without cause or approval, and 18 missed the mandatory testing without an excused absence. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, one of the key figures in pushing the plan through the Legislature, has said the program is meant to serve as a deterrent. Dewhurst spokesman Mike Wintemute said the lieutenant governor was "encouraged" by the results, and that success should be measured by the number of students who never began using steroids. Republican state Sen. Dan Patrick of Houston, a critic of the steroids testing, said he wasn't surprised by the results. He described the initiative as a "feel good" program that is not acting as a deterrent. "This program should be abolished moving forward. It's turned out to be a colossal waste of taxpayer money," said Patrick, who said he would rather spend the money every year battling alcohol abuse among teens because it's a much bigger problem. Asked whether the program should be scaled down, Wintemute said it was an issue lawmakers will consider when the Legislature reconvenes next year. "But the lieutenant governor believes it's prudent to receive the results of this next round of tests before making any final determination about the need for continued funding," Wintemute said. UIL spokeswoman Kim Rogers said the two students who tested positive are multi-sport athletes, but that the sports they play are unknown. Rogers said she did not know when conclusive results from the four unresolved tests would be ready. Testing was conducted at 195 schools, testing 6,455 boys and 3,662 girls. More than 3,300 football players were tested, more than three times the number of any other sport. Seven of those athletes either tested positive, missed testing because of an unexecused absence, refused testing or left the testing area. Only one male powerlifter was tested, compared with 277 male tennis players. Testing began in February after the program was stalled by creating guidelines and finding a company to implement the program. The contract was awarded to the National Center for Drug Free Sport, which also handles testing for the NCAA. In submitting its results to the UIL, the company wrote, "we must steer clear of the temptation to use the number of positive cases generated by this short period of testing to draw any conclusions about the success, or lack thereof, of this testing initiative." Random testing resumes in the fall, and state officials say between 40,000 and 50,000 student-athletes will be screened during the school year. --- Associated Press Writer Kelley Shannon in Austin contributed to this report.
