  5. www.texasprepinsider.com Michael back from the road Premium Story Christian Michael (Robert Sellers/Robs Sports Pics) By David Sandhop Publisher Posted Jul 28, 2008 Beaumont Westbrook running back Christine Michael has been busy the last two weeks, and he visits with Aggie Websider about his recruiting process and his timeline to make a decision. Which schools are in his final two? Are there any sleepers? What are the Aggies' chances? It’s been a very busy and eventful last two weeks for the 5-foot-11, 205-pound running back Christine Michael since he participated with his Beaumont Westbrook (TX) teammates at the state 7-on-7 tournament in College Station in mid-July. Michael took his first plane flight to Florida to participate in the prestigious Top Gun Camp, where the four-star prospect battled with some of the best athletes in the nation, and emerged as one of surprises of the event. However, Michael made it clear that his intention wasn’t to make a statement, but rather to have a good time. “I didn’t go there to prove anything or make a statement,†Michael said. “I went there to have fun and enjoy myself while competing with some of the best players in the nation.†However, whether intended or not, Michael did make a statement and turned heads of the national recruiting services in a camp performance that will likely boost the Texas blue chipper into the national elite category with a five-star rating a distinct possibility when services update the latest player ratings. But the humble Beaumont product said he gained something more valuable than a higher recruiting ranking. “There were some great athletes there and they really pushed my performance. That’s why I think I did so well. I like the competition,†Michael said. “But more importantly I made a lot of new friends there and I enjoyed hanging out with them. I’m talking to them on the phone and staying in touch. It was a great experience.†Michael was supposed to take his road show from Florida to Baton Rouge to participate in the LSU elite camp last week. However, Michael did not make it to Louisiana after staying in Florida an extra day. “I was supposed to go to the LSU camp, but I stayed in Florida an extra day and missed the camp,†Michael said. “I still want to visit LSU before I make a final decision, and I’m talking to the coaching staff to set something up. They wanted me to come up Tuesday, but I can’t do it.†The coveted running back still plans to make a decision in August before the season starts, but in addition to an unofficial visit to LSU, Michael also intends to visit Texas A&M one more time before he announces his commitment. “I still want to visit Texas A&M before I commit,†Michael said. The Aggies have been high on his list from the start. In fact, he briefly committed to Texas A&M in February after his first junior day visit but quickly backed off that commitment to open up the recruiting process. However, his feelings for Aggies haven’t changed and he’s built a strong relationship in the process with the coaching staff. “The coaching staff is great. They care about me personally and have always been right there in my recruitment,†Michael said. “The staff has incredible knowledge about the game, but beside that they are good, sincere people.†Michael stopped short of saying that his recruitment is a two horse race between LSU and Texas A&M, but he did say that he’s unlikely to take other visits to his finalists like Texas, OU, and Nebraska before ending the process. “I was planning to go to Texas, but I don’t think that will happen now. I don’t know if I have the time,†Michael said. “It will probably be just A&M and LSU. I’m close with the A&M coaches, and LSU is such a good football program and they are both close to home.†Going into his final round of unofficial visits, does the Beaumont native list an odds-on favorite to acquire his verbal pledge in August? “I don’t know. That’s a tough question,†Michael said. “But I’d have to say that Texas A&M has the upper hand right now.†If all goes as scheduled, look for a mid-August decision from the lone star state’s highest rated running back. Will he stay in his home state of Texas and play for the Aggies or venture across the Sabine River to play for Les Miles and the LSU Tigers? Could a sleeper like OU, Nebraska, or Texas surprise everyone? We’ll learn the answer to that question shortly.

The event kicks off in earnest today and runs through Wednesday with exhibits, lectures and meetings, all of which will be conducted in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. There were a handful of events Sunday, including the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association Hall of Honor reception, in which the late Ronnie Bell was inducted. Bell was the Alief ISD athletic director for 10 years before dying in December 2005. He also served as a coach for 13 years at Dulles and led the Vikings to the state football title game in 1991. Tonight’s featured event is the basketball all-star game (7:30 p.m., Bill Greehey Arena on the campus of St. Mary’s University). 10. WO-S grad Matherne in Tuesday's All-Star game Van Wade The Orange Leader West Orange-Stark’s adopted “Texan†will get to strut his stuff one more time representing the Mustangs. Mustang offensive lineman Tim Matherne (6-1, 258) will participate for the South Team at the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Football Game Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The gamed will be broadcasted live by Fox Sports Southwest. Matherne may still talk in his Cajun Louisiana tongue, but he bleeds Blue and Silver. “It’s going to be a great feeling to represent West Orange-Stark for a final time,†said Matherne. “This school and our program has meant so much to me the last three years. I have a lot of people to thank for helping me turn into a man.†Matherne moved into the WO-S school district during his sophomore campaign after Hurricane Katrina forced Matherne and his family to evacuate from his native Louisiana. Then, just a few weeks later Hurricane Rita visited Southeast Texas. Matherne picked up all-district honors all three years at WO-S but his senior year was extra special as he made All-State on both the Texas Sportswriters All-State Team and the Sports Editor Team as well. Matherne posted well over 100 “pancakes†during his senior campaign and when the Mustangs needed some tough yards they always seemed to go through No. 77 to get them. The Mustang offense churned out nearly 368 yards a game with 262 of it coming on the ground. “We really controlled things up front this year,†said Matherne. “We ran the ball more this year than in the first two years and us offensive lineman, we like that. We can really unload and wipeout people.†Matherne also had the pleasure for blocking for such Mustang greats like Kenneth Beasley, Earl Thomas and DePauldrick Garrett, who became the school’s all-time leading rusher last season. Matherne is just part of a long tradition of Mustangs that have played in the All-Star game as such former standouts like Kevin Smith, Gayron Allen, Beasley and Thomas have played in the event. However, Matherne is the first offensive lineman. “Tim is so deserving of the honor,†said long-time Mustang head coach Dan Hooks. “Offensive lineman might be the toughest spot to earn on the roster. What the coaches told me they liked the most about Tim was the way he stayed on his blocks and his energy. He never rested any downs. He was all-out all the time. We’re so proud of him and happy that he wanted to be a Mustang.†All WO-S accomplished with Matherne in the lineup was a 34-4 record and three straight district titles. Matherne is excited about matching up against some of the state’s finest. He is also the only Golden Triangle player participating this year. “It’ll be a fun challenge for me,†said Matherne. “A lot of those guys will be playing at schools like Texas and Texas A&M. I’m just going to go out and give it my best. It will be a college-type atmosphere and that will give me a taste of that.†Matherne will head back over the Sabine River to play for Louisiana College in Pineville next fall. The South squad will be coached by Alamo Heights head coach Don Byrd. The Basketball All_Star game will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena on the cmapus of St. Mary’s University. Hardin High School’s Daniel Marsh will compete for the South unit.

  12. Pitchers top all-area baseball squad From sports staff reports Baytown Sun Published July 27, 2008 MVP -- Brett Marshall, Sterling Offensive player of the year -- Hunter Cervenka, Sterling Defensive player of the year -- Ross Hales, Barbers Hill Newcomer of the year -- Reed Seeley, Lee First team P – Hunter Silva, Barbers Hill P – Kendall Thamm, Barbers Hill C – Jake Ponder, Barbers Hill 1B – Jimmy Mott, Sterling 2B – Jesse Luna, Lee SS – Derek Brooks, Sterling 3B – Frank Rangell, Crosby OF – Michael Mahan, Lee OF – Trevor Swint, Sterling OF – Corti Wilson, BCA Util – Ronnie Newell, Crosby Second team P – Jorge Heraud, BCA P – Keagan Kogut, Sterling C – Kevin Peters, Sterling 1B – Alex Rocha, Barbers Hill 2B – Cody Clifton, Barbers Hill SS – Tony Carmona, Barbers Hill 3B – Chance Smith, Sterling OF – John Sherry, Sterling OF – Chris Bertram, BCA OF — Heath Padgett, Barbers Hill Util – Cade Ramirez, Crosby Editor’s note: This is the fifth in a series of all-area teams chosen by The Baytown Sun sports staff for the 2008 spring semester sports. Selectors in District 21-5A undoubtedly had a tough time picking a most valuable player for this past baseball season. It was even tougher for The Baytown Sun. 21-5A champion Sterling, which advanced all the way to the regional semifinal round of the Class 5A playoffs, had two excellent choices in Brett Marshall and Hunter Cervenka. They were two players drafted by the pros for their pitching, and they could hit, too. Ditto for Barbers Hill’s Ross Hales, the MVP of District 21-4A. So, in selecting The Baytown Sun’s 2008 all-area team, the sports staff followed the 21-5A coaches in selecting Marshall our team’s overall MVP. Cervenka, who slugged 13 homers for the Rangers this spring, is our pick as offensive player of the year. Hales, whose coach called the best-fielding first baseman he’d ever coached – a position he excelled at when not pitching – is the defensive player of the year. Topped by those three, the all-area first team could take on all comers and expect to come out on top. Reed Seeley, a freshman who started the season as a question mark and ended it as Lee’s ace, is the newcomer of the year. Barbers Hill’s “other pitchers,†Hunter Silva and Kendall Thamm, were first-team picks at that position, just as they were on their all-district team. Their catcher, Jake Ponder, completes the battery. Sterling’s Jimmy Mott and Derek Brooks earned first-team infield positions, at first base and shortstop, respectively, and Lee’s Jesse Luna is the second baseman. Frank Rangell of Crosby is at third base. The outfield includes Sterling’s Trevor Swint, Michael Mahan of Lee and Baytown Christian’s Corti Wilson. Ronnie Newell of Crosby completes the first team as utility player. Pitchers Jorge Heraud of BCA and Keagan Kogut of Sterling lead off the second team. Catcher Kevin Peters, third baseman Chance Smith and outfielder John Sherry also represent the Rangers on the second team. Barbers Hill players on the second team include first baseman Alex Rocha, second baseman Cody Clifton, shortstop Tony Carmona and outfielder Heath Padgett. BCA’s Chris Bertram rounds out the outfield and Crosby’s Cade Ramirez is the utility player.
