  4. Stewart expects fine from USAC for role in 'altercation' INDIANAPOLIS -- Two-time Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart expects to be fined by the U.S. Auto Club for an "altercation" with an official during Thursday night's race at O'Reilly Raceway Park. The incident occurred after points leader Tracy Hines, who drives for one of Stewart's two National Midget teams, got into the wall and there wasn't a track official or push truck present to help get the car back in the race. Hines' crew reportedly attempted to change a right rear flat and get him back into the race before another restart. As the crew pushed the car to the front of the straightaway, a USAC official indicated it was too late. Stewart then came down to pit lane to get an explanation for the call. He reportedly knocked the headset from the official's head and then shoved him. "We had an altercation," Stewart said Friday after unveiling the car number (14) and sponsors (Office Depot and Old Spice) he'll showcase for Stewart-Haas Racing next season. "It was a situation [where] we didn't understand a call they made." In a statement Friday, USAC official Kevin Miller acknowledged that there was an incident but would not say who was involved. "A review of the incident will be conducted Monday morning among USAC officials and staff," Miller said in a statement. "At that time an official USAC response will be released." Stewart said the incident ultimately could cost Hines, who finished 22nd, the USAC crown. He also admitted if he had to do it over again he wouldn't have confronted the official. "When you're sitting there and you've got your corporate sponsors there and you've got a car on the racetrack and it's sitting on pit lane and they can't get a push truck to it, you're supporting your guys and your team that worked on that car to get it back out," he said. "There was definitely a disagreement. We talked about it after it happened and after the race was over. It got their eyes open and they're doing everything they can to make sure incidents like that don't happen again."

  7. NBA has 6 nicknames in mind for OK City NBA files for rights to 6 nicknames 6 hours, 9 minutes ago [Hidden Content] NBA has filed for trademark rights to six nicknames for the league’s new Oklahoma City franchise: Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder and Wind. An attorney for the league made the filing Monday with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Marshal is usually spelled with one l. It’s not clear why the league used a variant spelling. The filing is listed on the patent office’s Web site. The NBA and the team have refused to discuss possible new names for the team formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics ahead of an official announcement, which has not yet been scheduled.

  9. charles barkley..... Charles Barkley tips well, pays busboy's tuition to Temple By J.E. Skeets Not sure how BDL missed this story yesterday — oh, that's right, we were busy setting the unofficial NBA marathon live chat record — but hey, better late than never. Charles Barkley is giving his money away again. No, no, no, don't judge! This time, instead of feeding quarters into some slot machine or doubling-down on 14 at the blackjack table, Barkley's picked up the tuition for a busboy at a restaurant in Philly. From the Philadelphia Daily News: "Sir Charles told [Christian] Abate he would like to help him with his tuition, and Abate wasn't sure how to respond. Barkley didn't give him much time, telling Abate that he had the length of Barkley's meal to decide. Abate wisely accepted. "He's a nice kid," Barkley said of Abate on Friday. "He was working with kids, I loved that he wanted to be a teacher, and I wanted to help him," Barkley told us by phone between stops on a flight to Reno where he was making a speech. While the little-more-than-15% tip may seem particularly special, it's not so unusual for Sir Charles. In fact, the lovable goof has given at least $3 million to schools and education in his home state of Alabama. He's a giver, not a golfer. As SportsByBrooks so eloquently put it, Barkley is just like Robin Hood: "He tries to take from the rich, but since he’s not very good at it, he gives to the poor out of his own pocket." So noble. Thump Bump, Chuck.
  10. Big day coming for Baytown’s Patriots By Tara Sullivan The Baytown Sun Published July 26, 2008 - Updated 51 minutes ago The new Goose Creek Memorial High School is near complete and excitement is drumming up for the Patriots as the August 25 start date approaches. Price Jacobs, 15, has opted to leave Ross S. Sterling and head for Goose Creek Memorial like so many of his peers. Coming from a home where both parents teach at Sterling, the Jacobs were surprised when their son announced his plans. “Having waited all these years for him to get to Sterling, we were pretty surprised,†said Price’s mother Nancy who has taught at Sterling for the last 15 years. “The Rangers are what he’s known all his life.†But her son’s eagerness to be a part of this new chapter in Goose Creek’s history spread like wildfire in the Jacobs household. Nancy even decided to go on to GCM herself, where she will be teaching and coaching the cheerleading squad. “I guess the buzz became contagious,†she said. Though the Jacobs home will be split (Price’s father Andy will remain a teacher at Sterling), the family is very excited for the new school year to begin. “I’ll get to be one of the first ones there to start new traditions,†said Price. “Some of my friends are going too and some are staying at Sterling, but I think for the most part we’re excited to be part of something brand new.†Getting ready to be a GCM sophomore, Price said he’s already been a part of summer league baseball and is eager to get started with the new school year. Walking through the grandiose building that will soon be the alma mater of about 1,200 students, it becomes clear that the Patriots have much to look forward too. As planned, the 365,000 square-foot facility boasts two gymnasiums, a commons area with a ceiling lifted 40-feet and plenty of wide, breezy hallways. To the excitement of all involved, the school’s mascot and colors were actually selected by parents and students of the future school. They chose red, black and silver to adorn their uniforms, which boast the patriot mascot. The symbolic selection aligned perfectly with the school name, which the school board chose to pay homage to those who had given their lives for our country. GCM principal Al Richard said everything for GCM’s first day is going as planned, with the district getting new student transfers to the school daily. “We’ve continued to be excited,†he said. “Construction is moving along and making great strides.†While the exteriors of the building and out door athletic structures are complete, the finishing touches for the interior are still underway by Gilbane Building Company. Gilbane’s Facilities Planning and Construction Manager David Fluker said his crew has managed to make up for past weather delays, keeping everything right on schedule. Six days (and sometimes nights) a week, Fluker has between 75 and 250 men on-site, busily measuring, installing and finishing. “It’s going to be done on time,†said Fluker confidently. He also reported that there have been no unusual setbacks for his crew. The new school will be a melting pot for students from Sterling and Lee high schools, and Highlands, Gentry, Cedar Bayou and Baytown junior schools. These students have already begun to show their Patriot spirit by writing and selecting their own fight song and even playing parent-organized summer sports under the GCM moniker. “I’m ready for the school to be done so we can go see it,†said future GCM student Price Jacobs. “I’m ready to go start those traditions.†With the school year set to begin on Monday August 25, there are several earlier dates for GCM students and parents to note. Monday, August 4, will be the reporting of fine arts and athletics students. Wednesday, August 13, will be the first of three orientation sessions, with Juniors in the morning and Sophomores in the afternoon. Thursday, August 14, will be the Freshmen “Fish Camp†and orientation. Goose Creek Memorial High School is located on the corner of Wallisville Road and Main Street in Baytown. The address is 6001 East Wallisville Road, though the administration’s temporary office is at Victoria Walker Elementary School, located at 4711 Seabird Road in Baytown.

  14. Fan hurt by pitcher's toss See a report on the dustup between the Dayton Dragons and Peoria Chiefs in Class A. DETAILS DAYTON, Ohio — A minor-league pitcher accused of throwing a ball that hit a fan during a brawl has been charged with felonious assault. Peoria Chiefs pitcher Julio Castillo was arrested Thursday following the fight with the Single-A Dayton Dragons. The fan hit by the ball was taken to a hospital for treatment. Montgomery County Jail officials say the 21-year-old Castillo is scheduled to be arraigned Friday. Video from the game shows Castillo throwing the ball but doesn't show where the ball landed. The fan's name and condition weren't immediately available. Umpires ejected 15 players and the team's managers following the bench-clearing brawl that lasted about 10 minutes. After an hour delay, Dayton won 6-5.

  16. Dayton QB makes early commitment to Nebraska By Jerry Michalsky Contributor Published July 25, 2008 DAYTON — Cody Green’s not going to be 100 percent when football season starts in a little more than a month. College coaches don’t seem to mind. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Dayton quarterback may have put the brakes on some recruiters recently when he made a verbal commitment to sign and play with Nebraska in 2009. Despite sitting out most of last season with a broken ankle that hasn’t completely healed nearly a year later, Green was the focus of major recruiting efforts by Division I football programs. He narrowed his choices down to a pair of Big 12 schools, Texas A&M and Nebraska. able to make his final choice between Green and his mom made the trip to Nebraska on June the 16th. Impressed with the facilities in Lincoln and also the tradition of the Cornhusker nation it was an easy choice for Green to make. Although this is just a verbal commitment, it appears Green will be a Cornhusker in the future. “They run the west coast offense there and it it just a three-stop drop so that will be ideal for him ,†Dayton head coach Jerry Stewart said. “Cody is a smart and bright kid who also excels in the classroom and he will do well there.†The 2007 season was a tough one for Green. Just into the second game of the season, Green went down with an ankle injury against Nacogdoches. It was no simple sprained ankle. Green would have surgery and have screws inserted into his ankle. All Green could do was watch from his crutches as his Bronco teammates went five games deep into the playoffs before bowing out to Austin Lake Travis in the Class 4A state semi-final game at Kyle Field. Green put himself on recruiters’ radars with a huge sophomore season. He led the Broncos to the second round of the playoffs in 2006. Inserted in the fourth game of the season, Green finished the season with 1,560 yards passing. He finished with 21 touchdown passes while adding seven touchdowns on the ground. Green really kicked it in during the last two district games by throwing for nine touchdown passes combined against Nederland and Port Neches-Groves. “He’s only about 80 percent healthy right now because the rehab has been a little slow,†Stewart said. “But I think he will be fine this year.†The preseason predictors aren’t worry, picking Dayton’s Broncos No. 4 in pre-season polls. Some of that ranking might come from the presence of Bronco teammate A.J. Dugat, another Division I prospect. The versatile Dugat committed to TCU last April. “There are still a lot of schools actively pursuing A.J.†said Stewart. The coach has an idea why. “I think he is one of best players in the stateâ€, Stewart said. Dugat can play wide receiver, running back, quarterback, and in the defensive secondary also. In leading Dayton deep into the playoffs last year, Dugat finished with 72-catches for 1,028 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also added 536 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground while also playing some quarterback and passing for 463 yards and five touchdowns. “They are going to double team A.J. this year but he will still get his,†Stewart said.
  17. Rule sidelines, steams UIL coaches By Jerry Michalsky Contributor Published July 23, 2008 Walking into the Lee College arena Tuesday night to watch some basketball there was one thing missing on both benches. With two teams from Barbers Hill matched up in a battle with one another there were no coaches on either bench. Because of the UIL rule for summer sporting activities, high school coaches are not allowed to coach their players from the sidelines, stands, or even for that matter by cell phone. The only thing coaches are allowed to do in the summer time is monitor the kids in the weight room from Monday through Thursday and the kids are also allowed to do some running in front of the coaches. But keep in mind the UIL is watching this also by only allowing only a certain amount of time per week. Although he follows the UIL rule to a T, Barbers Hill head basketball coach Nathan Toon thinks there could be stipulations put into place. “Why not give us a couple of weeks in the summer or let us coach our kids at a couple of summer tournaments?â€he asked. “If we just put something into place to where we could give the kids some type of instruction, then I think the summer time would be more beneficial to all of us. I also feel the kids would be more committed to playing in the summer time and to also work harder to fine tune their game.†Of course, some coaches might be tempted to go over the line. But Toon doesn’t think so. “I do not think there would be an advantage gained either way as we (coaches), worked together to make sure we were not trying to take advantage of the situation,†Toon said. “Lets just set a certain amount of days or weeks to give some coaching so we could better the level of plays for the kids. Football is allowed to have two-a-days during the summer in August so why not give the other sports some time also?†With no coaches on either sideline for Toon’s kids, he could only sit and watch as his players went against each other. Even if there was a coach there, Toon would not be allowed to give the coach any type of instruction of what type of offense to run or who he wanted in the game. “I guess the UIL feels that if we were given some time, there would be coaches that would try and take advantage.†Sterling freshman guard Isaiah Stevenson says he is happy either way to get the chance to play summer ball. “I feel us playing in the summer gives us a chance to gain a bond with one another,†he said. “Summer does help us because we seem to be able to get stronger and plus we are learning more about another.†Lee College head basketball coach Roy Champagne agrees things could be better. “There is more activity than productivity going on in the summer time,†he said. Head baseball coach Brian Williams of Houston Austin was coaching the Sterling squad in the final game of the night. So why was Williams allowed to coach? Because Sterling is not in the same school district as Austin and Williams has no advantage to give the Sterling team, he is allowed to use his own time and help the Rangers improve. “I am just trying to help these kids get better,†said Williams. “Anything I can do to help coach Patton’s kids get better, then I am all for that. “ Maybe one day something will be put into place allowing coaches some extra time to spend during the summer time. But for now coaches Toon and Patton can only sit and watch and wait for basketball season to roll around.
