Lee's treys overwhelm LSC-PA By JERRY MICHALSKY The Port Arthur News Baytown - It was raining three-pointers Saturday night at the Lee College Arena. Unfortunately for Lamar State, it was the Rebels who were doing the most damage from outside the arch. Lee College hit 10 three-pointers in the first half alone and rode Hollis Giles' 31 points to a season opening win against Lamar State 95-74. The Rebel were successful on 10 of 20 three-pointers in the first half to take a 57-38 half-time lead. After the Seahawks held a brief 2-0 lead thanks to a jump shot by George Williamson, the three point show started for the Rebels. Giles would hit his first of four three-pointers on the night and then add a little runner to give his team a 5-2 lead. After another basket made it 7-2 the Seahawks would hit a three-pointer of thir own by Andre Boutte to cut the lead to 7-5. Then Giles would take over for the Rebels. The sophomore scored 25 points in the first alone. Dominique Keller of Port Arthur Memorial got in on the three-point show, hitting a trey to up the lead to 20-10. Keller, who is in his second season for the Rebels, is being looked at by a lot of Division I programs. Last season Keller lead the Rebels in scoring at 18.1 points per game and is a pre season third team All American selection. C.J. Busby hit a three-pointer to up the lead to 36-21 with 8:41 left in the first half. The lead would grow to 47-27 moments later, thanks to a trey by Keller. Down 57-38 at the half, Lamar State came out in the second half and went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 57-43 thanks to a three-pointer by Noah Cole and a lay-up by Boutte. That would be the closest the Seahawks would get the rest of the way as Giles converted a three-point play and lay-up to push the lead back to 19. Lamar State had four players in double figures on the night. Seth Harley, Cody Guidry, and Boutte all finished with 12 points apiece while Williamson was also in double figures with 10. Keller joined Giles in double figures for Lee College with 12 points, all coming in the first half. The Seahawks will play their first home game Tuesday night at the Carl A. Parker Center against Cy-Fair College out of Houston. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Lady Indians get ready for a new year By Cody Pastorella The Port Arthur News After a near playoff berth in 2005, the Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians fell to 12-19 in 2006 and will likely struggle again this season. The Lady Indians finished District 22-4A with a 4-10 record, and are expected to be the same caliber of team this year. PN-G does return five players from varsity last year, but head coach Stephanie Ansel isn’t sure her team’s speed will make up for its lack of size. ?e have some kids coming back from last year’s team but they didn’t all play a lot. There isn’t a lot of game time experience on this team,†Ansel said. “We are just going to have to wait and see if any of our newcomers are going to step it up.†The Indians return Sami Jo Williams, a third-year wing and 5-6 senior. Williams has the most experience on the squad. Junior Samantha Lunceford also returns for her second year on varsity. Lunceford, a 5-9 post, is the biggest threat for PN-G in the paint. Other returners include seniors Jessica Sheilds, a 5-4 guard, Brittany Calhoun, a 5-4 wing, and Mailaika Tezeno, a 5-2 wing. Newcomers include seniors Antoniella Hebert, a 5-5 wing; Kayla Hoyt, a 5-10 post; Lynsey Johnson, a 5-6 guard; and Kaylen Vera, a 5-6 post. Ansel is also hoping freshman Mallory Livingston can add more speed and defense to the Indians basketball team. “We are short but we are hoping to pester other teams on defense,†Ansel said. “We are going to play man and we’re going to run and gun on offense. We’re going to try to make some things happen with our speed and adapt to our size. Ansel said her players bought into the system last year and she expects they will pick up where they left off. “We are not very deep, so we’re going to have to be in shape,†Ansel said. “We have to be great at the little things and continue to shoot well from the free throw line (team shot 57 percent from the charity stripe last season) this year. “We weren’t very strong shooting three-pointers last year, but I think we have some girls who will do better this year. “We have a quick front court, we’re going to pressure other teams and hopefully tire our opponents out.†Ansel said she hopes the preseason schedule will prepare her young squad for a more competitive district season in 2007.
