1. McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge, established a year later, encompasses nearly 59,000 acres and has been acquired entirely through Migratory Bird Conservation Commission Funds (includes Federal Duck Stamp dollars).

http://www.fws.gov/duckstamps/conservation/states/Texas/Profiles/McFaddin-TexasPointNWR.htm

My question was really as to WHY this was done this year to hunt Star Lake. It just ticked me off to know that I was now gunna have to pay $10 a person to go hunt out there. My dad would never have been able to afford to take me and my brother hunting out there as often as we did. $30 a hunt for a dad and his kids??!! Maybe that's what they are trying to accomplish here. There seems to be way more hunters now than just a few years ago. If you walk in down the beach it is still free(for now...)
And the comment about AHP, one of the things they did was to make all the WMA's permit areas. Like Dam-B north of 190. It was always free until the Type-2 system came out.
I'm just mad at one more thing that's going to cost me more $$$ Especially for hunting somewhere I love to go.
2. In PA, I'm pretty sure the Justice Dept came in and set the rules for what school you could attend. I thought if you were black and lived in Lincoln zone you could choose whatever school you wanted in an attempt to integrate TJ and SFA. If you were white and lived in TJ zone you could go to Lincoln or TJ, but not SFA. If you were black and lived in TJ zone, you had to go to TJ or SFA. I could be wrong on exactly what the rules were... I remember all the buses would meet at Edison and you would have to go get on the one to take you wherever you were going.
Heck, my dad taught at Linclon forever, and he would always say that TJ was stealing the good football players that should have went to Lincoln!! So it likely went both ways in PA...
3. The bold/red comments are the ones I have issue with. Why would you make your 3rd comment at all if you are "not privileged to all of the inside knowleged of the Lumberton team" ???
This is a discussion board and you're entitled to whatever opinion you want to have. I just haven't read or seen anything this year that justifies these comments.

Good luck Lady Raiders and stay focused on the goal at hand!!

I was not at game but I don't understand how you come on here and run down Coach Goad. This is her FIRST year as a varsity basketball coach. She took over a program in turmoil, has had to deal with some more this year, and has her team in position to make the playoffs.

As for last night's game. I will always give the kids credit because they play the game. Lumberton blew a 8 point lead, apparently got down by 7 ine the 2nd half and came back to win?  All dispite the refs being terrible...
That doesn't sound like bad coaching to me.

I'm not saying she's perfect, but give her a chance and get her out of the microscope.
Congrats girls and Coach Goad!!!

Lumberton won 57-52 in overtime.
We got lucky with the win. Very, very out coached!!
Tough hard fought game. Congrats to Lumberton.

My reply is to slick74 post is in three parts:
1. I too thought LCM's coaches seemed a step ahead and put our girls in a position to win in a game that had a ton of distractions and  extracurricular activity going on everywhere. (get back to this in a minute) The most evident was halftime adjustments.  LCM was down by 8 at the half and opened the 3rd with a 15-0 run. (or something close to that) Sometimes the youth and inexperience of this team still becomes a big factor after glimpses of great potential.

2. How games are called.  I don't think bad calls cost anybody this game and I'm not blaming a loss on the refs, but if you were in this gym last night (on either side) you left without a clue as to what was a foul and what was not.  I try my best to see the game with my eyes and not my heart, but last night was unbelievable.  (JV game was even worse)

3. I know Lumberton has had some well documented coach/parent/fan problems in the past and this is truely NOT an effort to throw fuel on that fire all over again.  I am not privileged to all of the inside knowleged of the Lumberton team, but I have seen most of these girls play for several years during the season and summer league and there are some talented girls sitting the bench with shoes that look like they just came out of the box.

My comments were strictly to give our coaching staff an "atta boy" for what I thought was a good job in spite of the fact that we lost the game...and I WAS there to see it.

Question for the new assistant basketball coach: what is your name, what school were you at previously and what were you coaching at that time, did you play basketball in HS, have you ever coached basketball at any level, and what would YOU say is your ability and overall knowledge of the game.???

This would probably be a good time for Neumann to justify his hire, and for this new coach to lay out the resume that landed him this job.
Still no response ??? Does ANYONE know anything about this assistant coach and his credential??
I do and I don't think he should be the focus of your thread. He is from Ned, lives in Ned, and is coming to work in Ned in the best interest of himself and his family. Is he a "basketball guy"? No. But he took the job offered to him. The AD could prob move Smith and put Walker at MS and both would be happy, but AD is the boss. He has to have SOME reason for putting the coaches where they are. The coaches just do what they gotta do. Don't drag Walker down for doing what's best for himself and his family.

What will Memorial look like next year? Do they have much coming back?
the freshman guard will be back. got a couple of Jrs coming back but i dont expect much next season from what was told to me. (meaning playoffs yet again but no deep run)

What happened to all of the PA talent that use to dominate SETX year after year after year? (and don't say they transferred to Nederland.)
I miss the days of The Lincoln Bumblebees!  :-\

Them days of bumblebees pride is gone, but IF the 6'8 football/basketball player comes back i think the team can surprise some people.

What a shame... do the kids and has-beens still mix it up at the rec on 9th ave, YMCA and open gyms?? PA was one of the few places where a pick-up game at an open gym might be as good or better than some elite AAU tournaments.

Slam14- You are mistaking me for for my good buddy with twin freshmen daughters.  ;D Thats a compliment. My daughter is a little older. Has played for Coach Gholson for two years.

Solo and Slam-Thanks for the comments and good advice.  I agree with you both for the most part. You can't let a coach run you off. That's why I told my daughter to suck it up. She loves playing basketball. I have no doubt in that. But I also doubt she will play next season for this coach. She will play the sports that she gets the most enjoyment from. She will make up her mind this Summer. Fortunately she is able to play pretty much any sport and do reasonably well. But I love watching her play BBall.

At what point does "tough coach" turn into "verbally abusive a-hole"? Very few of these kids have aspirations to play beyond high school. Why should they be subjected to being told every single day how bad they suck? I understand being tough. But why be mean-spirited also?

And yes Solo, there have been some parents that get overly involved and it transfers to the daughter/player. I have done my best to keep out of it. When my daughter has had a problem she has met with the coach on her own, without parents involved.  I was pretty proud of her for that actually.
Thanks again for the comments and advice.

Let me thow in my 2cents here:
First of all as coachs we are not perfect and I have yet to meet a coach who is not very competitive in what we do. So we are going to push our kids to be the best they can be. Some kids just want to be part of a team and have fun. If as coaches we allow that for some kids, then the one's who are competitive will suffer, be it loses or just not being the best team they can be. IMO if you're only in it for the fun of it GET OUT! Competitive sports are not for everyone. Doesn't make the kid any less in my eyes. Some of my favorite kids I teach do not play sports and they are GREAT kids who will be successful in life!
Whether or not you are a "tough coach" or an "a-hole" is an easy question to answer. WHEN and HOW is whatever is being considered negative being said?? If a kid doesn't get back on defense, he/she is likely going to hear about it, and he probably isn't going to like it. We as coaches aren't going to sugar coat anything. Being told you "suck"(not a good choice of words obviously) should motivate you to work harder so you don't "suck". What competitive person isn't trying to be the BEST that he/she can be??? Ever been scared to fail???

I, and I bet you, used to think our dads were a-holes. I did!! Looking back, he was an a-hole when I was NOT doing what I should have been doing! He wasn't an a-hole, I was an idiot!

Now if ANYONE, a coach or dad or whoever is an "a-hole" when you're doing what is right, then you've crossed the line and it becomes abuse as opposed to "tough love."

Now, I don't know first hand how Coach Gholson treats his girls, so I will not comment on who is right or wrong here.

I will only tell you the world is a mean, cruel place. And what I learned from my dad and coaches prepared me for that world, even though at the time they were preparing me, I didn't realize what was happening...

I can understand Dove and Mom08 frustration. Here is the reason, I have a lot of friends from HF that I met through the years in Little Dribblers and believe me the rivalry was just as intense as it was 30 years ago.(Orangefield) That being said, while the girls team have had some success just not the succes they should have. Here is an example, the 2007 class when they were 9 & 10 won nationals in Little Dribblers. They had some talent but when they got to high school they never made the playoffs. Still scratching my head on that one. The 2008 class beat us in Little Dribblers and in Junior High. Never beat us in high school. Still scratching my head. I do realize that you cannot compare Little dribblers and Junior High to high school. Things change when you get to high school. Some kids mature in junior high most do not until they get to high school. Some kids quit, some lose interest, some fall in love and then they start driving. There is a lot of things that changes for a kid once he/she goes to high school. Wish I had the answer but I don't.
Likely answer is they got the "Good Enough" disease.
That is the worst enemy of every youngster with potential. They think they are good and try to get by with a minimum amount of work. Next thing they know, everyone has passed them by.

LCM is much better team than Livingston, Vidor and PNG!!!! Losing to Lumberton was a joke and they were without Gonzo!!!!!  LCM beats Lumberton next go around by 20!!!!!

Now if Gonzo is out for an extended period of time then yes, the Bears are in trouble!!!!
How was it a joke??
Lumberton's kids played like they are capable of. They didn't lose thier minds when they got down early and were able to battle back, and then hold on to win. LCM seemed to hit evey clutch shot down the stretch, but Lumberton's kids were able to answer them all back. Soph-Ryan Stanley hit 2 huge 3's and another bucket in the fourth to balance Harley's 3 3's that quarter. His brother Wayne Stanley had 6 of his 13 in the fourth also. Lumberton also hit 7/8 of their FT's in the fourth.
Lum also took decent care of the ball with only 13 turnovers. Some of the foul difference was the result of Lumberton playing a non-pressure zone most of the game and LCM trying to pressure Lum and being out of position on the back side of thier zone.
Sure it hurt LCM not having Gonzales, he's a VERY good player, but how about giving Lumberton's kids a little credit for bowing thier necks and gutting out a win against a quality team??

Do you think Coach Richard is simply investing in the future, knowing that his team is going to be stronger in the coming years and teaching them to play with 10 players instead of 5?  I mean, I know that if I was going to play 20 minutes instead of 29 or 30, I could go all out and play with a higher level of intensity.
I think its more investing with the present. The HF coach knows exactly what lineup to use that will give them the maximum effort to compete. I've seen him do it ONCE! He's a egood guy and wants all his players to play and I can understand this position. Thats how we play in middle school and its fun for the kids. But you have entitled kids in that hs program :D
Actually what I would like to see next season is a tougher pre-district season. Sabine pass, Tarkington, and evadale will get you some wins and the record will look promising but those games don't challenge the team. Sure a couple of light games is fine...but the team needs to get some experience at pulling through a tough one in order to be able to do it in a district game.
hey, hey, naming names, is that really necessary?  ;) ;D

Dang someone had beat me to this....
12. HF has played 3 games!! They are 2-1 losing to Vidor(who by the way is much improved this year) and they seemed to handle their business against the other two teams. I'm glad yall are excited to have some kids who can play over there, just be a little patient and see what happens! Support your team in a positive way and you will see your program take off!! HF and Coach Richards are long overdue some success!! Good luck!!
