  14. COACHING LEGEND TAKES ANOTHER SHOT (3/6/09) Ever heard the term "Blast from the past?" Try "Unstoppable Cosmic Force from the past." That's kind of what happened at Aubrey today. Tiny 2A Aubrey, which will likely be moving up to 3A during next year's realignment, has secured the services of coaching legend G.A. Moore, the winningest coach in Texas High school history. The Celina (and Pilot Point, and Bryson, and Sherman for one year) great has compiled a career record of 412-83-9, numbers which will be difficult for any coach to approach. Just consider that -- if a coach were to win a DII title every year (a full 16 games), it would take him a little over 31 seasons to tie that total number of games coached. That's pretty daunting. In any case, Moore, who has signed a two-year contract, will handle all coaching duties and serve as the coordinator for all boys sports. His predecessor, Daryl Hellman, will serve as the school's athletic director. Wonder why someone at the age of 70 would return to coaching? He said he missed working with the students. Now that's coming back for the right reasons. Moore's resume is almost mind-boggling. His teams have won a combined eight state championships. He finished his career at Celina in the midst of a 57-game win streak. He has taken over a number of bad programs and immediately made them winners. And oh yeah, he finished his high school life at Pilot Point with 16 athletic letters before taking his playing career to UNT. Obviously, you can never be sure a coach will work out at a new school. But you'd have to think this one looks like pretty good for Aubrey. I wonder how many other coaches will want to come back into the fold since he and Gaines are back in the picture?
