Is this the only area in Texas where 5A schools routinely play 3A schools? That was unheard of back in the day; maybe playing one level down, but never two. The 5A schools have everything to lose and nothing to gain as they are expected to win those games every time. I just don't understand why a 5A coach would even consider playing 3A teams.
they would play for the competition. long ago in "the day" (early 60's), in the old system where 4a was the top bracket, 4a Houston teams used to drive to Pineland to play 1a West Sabine. Those teams also regularly went home with whippings in the neighborhood of 30 or so points. One year, West Sabine actually played Panola Jr College for their after district warm-up game. WS beat them by two or so points as I recall. So yeah, all those teams must have figured there was something in it for them. Competition better than they got in their own class.
I agree with you J Dog. When you've got it, you've got. Age doesn't matter. There is a reason they are hiring 31 year old Head Coaches in the NFL! P.S. LloydChristmas, How many "RINGS" does your dog in this hunt have? ;D
This is NOT aimed at anyone in particular. I do not know the applicants. But native intelligence does not change. You can get more experience, and that will help. But there is a certain snap that any leader needs. It is like speed. You cannot teach speed. You either have it, or you don't. And that is why you often have younger coaches beating those with much more experience. -
The guy is 29 years old. I'm not sure if it matters to all, but it would matter to me. What do yall think? Not saying he isn't the best guy for the job, but i would find it hard to believe even if he has 3 state championships that he had all the knowledge it take to be succesful.

Carthage DC is the man for the job.
Absolutely. If Morgan wants the job, we need to hire him. 3 straight State Championships. He has followed Bickham before so he knows what he is getting into. And from everything I have heard he is a great motivator whose defenses have gotten better as the year went on. This is the guy we need to hire.

Walkoviak came to Jasper at age 28 and you know how that worked out. The other guys may have longer track records, but Jasper has been chasing experience for the past several hires and we also know how that has worked out. I say hire the best man, regardless of the length of resume. Whoever that might be. -
Center plays at Huntington. This would be a great chance for Huntington to start district off in a real good way by beating Center. I will try to get the score for later. I know, I know, it is East Texas, but for those who are interested I will post.
Thank you! and if you pick up the Hudson/Jasper score that would be appreciated! :) -
all this talk about what jasper needs - defense, discipline, position changes,e tc. what they need is consistency in the head coach position. a number of the sub-varsity coaches have been there for quite some time, but there has been a revolving door at the top spot. all the people whose names have been mentioned could do a good job, but a couple of them would be part of the revolving door issue. bottom line we will all know in a few days - i would bet it is decided almost immediately after the closing date. lets hope it is the right guy.
and hope that his system and approach meshes with the holdover coaches all the way from junior high through varsity and vice versa. it may take a really strong personality to get everyone on the same page. everyone must get on the same page to re-establish the program. I agree with ctowndawgfan. Jasper can be just one good coach away from greatness. this time, for sure hope they make the right pick! -

Track is where Jasper has rung up state championships. 1975, 1985, 1991, and 1997. Had several other top four finishes. As someone mentioned, Coach Spoon died, and apparently the track program died with him. -
The common thread amongst most of the candidates seems to be that most have former connections to the Jasper program.
am I missing something here? what do you call connections? Alvarez was at Jasper. Were any of the others ever employed at Jasper? Question. Curious. Alvarez was at Jasper during the Walkoviak years and clearly has gone on to solid success. Are there others that also have done well elsewhere? If so, I have not heard of it. But there probably are some. Just do not know who they are..... -

i only want someone to stay if they are good! ;D the trouble is sometimes, it is the poor coaches that try to stay. but yes, I would love to see a good coach come, build up the program, and stay. occasionally it happens, as with Walkoviak and Barbay. But even some of the top level programs have coaching changes and the program continues to excel. the problem is that Jasper does not have the greatest hiring record. >:( rarely is it going to be a talent problem. -
j-dog theres no more walkoviak's,barbey's,or hooks left in high school football.money talks to the younger and older coaches these days.and i cant blame them if someone offered you $30,000 more to leave your job you would have a hard time not leaving.and for you playdefense larry upshaw did put in at hemphill but theres a few board members that dont like him.so thats a maybe for him.i hope all of them the best.me my self i would love for larry upshaw to get it good man and is a well disciplined coach the kids in jasper has been lacking for a while.and he may stay around also he likes to fish and his son loves to fish.
they have always been rare. most coaches at Jasper before Walkoviak used Jasper as merely a stepping stone. -

They legally have to go through certain procedures. My guess is that they already have a pretty good idea who they want. But if some super coach prospect comes in that they had no idea would be interested, I would think things could certainly turn in unexpected directions. Several years ago, Jasper "took a chance" on a 28 year old and he turned out to be probably the best coach Jasper ever had, and if not the best certainly the longest tenured at Jasper. His name, Gene Walkoviak. I would be happy to see them take a chance on some youngster with a Walkoviak type resume. I never heard him make excuses, he just went out and won football games. Once, when someone was moaning about a controversial call in a close loss, Walkoviak said it was his job to score enough points that the game would not hinge on one call, or one play. (I guess the Texans could learn something from that idea. ;D) -

Stack the box to stop Holland, and you'll see why Morgan threw for just under 3300 yards this year. (74 TD throws the last two yrs) So...lets say that Coldspring has the defensive line to pretty much stop Holland (and you just might from what I'm reading). But do you also have the secondary to match up with a prolific passing attack? Serious question, since maybe you have that too for all I know.
And.....there you have it. Coldspring had perhaps the best run defense I've seen against the Dawgs, but Morgan was given too much time to throw, and that's asking for trouble. Gilbert was definitely all that he was advertised to be- wow! Speed to burn and shifty-quick. Congrats on making it to the State Championship; no one can ever take that away from you.
Congratulations to Carthage on the big win! I will say this, your offensive line sure improved over when they played Jasper last year. I remember Morgan almost getting sacked several times then. CS never got close. And that is saying a lot to keep CS out. And yes, Gilbert is something special. Just like his brother at Oklahoma State. I had the privilege of watching both, and they can MOVE!

Don't get me wrong; They are both good (for high school), but nothing special. But then again, neither is Holland ;)
..... The fact that Gilbert's older brother is playing as a true freshman at Oklahoma State and had a huge kickoff return for a TD against OU a few weeks ago sure isn't going to hurt either....
yeah, I think it was an 89 yard return. Earned him Big 12 Special Team player of the week honors. The story around Huntsville is that Justin is the fastest athlete on the Oklahoma State campus including the track team, soccer team or whatever. For whatever it is worth, the Oklahoma State website indicates a listed time of 4.35 in the 40 for Justin. For a fact, Justin won the 100m at 4a State this past Spring. I have seen both of them play. My sense is that Sherman is just as fast and athletic as Justin. I feel sure there are VERY few high school football players that would be able to match steps with Sherman. Never know how things will turn out of course, but I can hardly wait to see how he matches up against those 4.4 defensive guys that Carthage reportedly has. Of course, key on Gilbert and Cummings can kill you. And vice versa. Carthage will get their stops, but if they make a mistake..... Gonna be interesting. This is for sure not your regular run of the mill "3 yards and a cloud of dust" running attack.
