2.
From what I hear, a lot of Lumberton's issues at football and other sports is maybe that off-season work and competition. When they are younger and do well against the other 20 4A middle schools.  They might not realize that those towns like Vidor, Nederland, and PN and Groves LC and Mauriceville are all broken up into separate teams.  Not sure about Beaumont schools.  I am not that familiar with their middle schools. Once all of those schools hit high school, they have not only a bigger talent pool but MORE competition for those starting spots when all of those kids come from separate schools.  Those kids knock themselves out working out, battling for each position.  Lumberton in football might not have the drive because those kids have been playing since at least 7th grade together and most spots are filled.  Part of the problem.  Also, not sure that you can fix that one middle school issue in Lumberton.  That's not the coaches fault.
I don't know if that's a good excuse in Vidor's case.  They have a middle school (4-6 grade) and a junior high (7-8 grade) so they have the same situation going on.  Lord knows that Vidor suffered for a long time though and I've always been very pro-multiple junior highs/middle schools like C.O. Wilson and Central with having the players get that extra fire to compete.
 3.
Wow, I know PNG is having a down year, and admittedly, I know nothing about the team they field this year. But these predictions make PNG out to be the bad news bears or something, and it's quite shocking for me to read. I wish the Pirates to win, but stranger things have happened. They better not take them lightly just because they're on a roll, and PNG is down. Remember, the person who will do the most damage, is the one you don't see coming. Better show up to play, Pirates. Any team with at least 11 dressed players can win at any time. Mistake free football is always the best place to start. What's that old Mathews' formula he used to preach to us? Hard Work + Dedication = Luck
You a good man there, kid, boy.  Good man there.
 4. I say it comes down to Tamayo's leg. Vidor-20 Nederland-17 It's gonna be a defensive scrum.
 5. Shuffle to flow, go when you know Split, flow, cutback, drag Dookie on the shoulder pad (for all you guys that got to play under Hatch) This defense is looking good.
 6.
I might need to charge up at HT
Would be greatly appreciated!  ;D
 7.
I WILL BE FOLLOWING THIS GAME ON HERE TONIGHT FROM MY MOTEL ROOM IN GALLUP NEW MEXICO!!! GO PIRATES KICK THE SNOT OUT OF EM!!!!!
And I just moved to Nashville in March and am sitting at my terrible call center job.  There's one thing that's getting me through the night and it's them Pirates!
 8.
I am the Defensive Coordinator at Alvarado.
Mama's biscuits, dookie on the shoulder pad, split flow cut back drag, line down, Hogan's goat...I could go on and on.  You're a great man and coach and your deeply missed in Vidor.
 9. I'd just like to say that I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my comments over the last week.  Coach Mathews got in touch with me last night and apologized for the tribulations that EVERYONE went through that season; not just the players, but the coaches as well.  It was just an off year for everyone in that locker room and it explains a lot.  Again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone and wish the Pirates good luck next season and on. I still believe

There will always be those who are the coaches "favorites", which I guess is what you are trying to imply, but I have never seen any unfair treatment when it came to breaking the rules. I can say this because I was considered one of his "favorites"  and on two, there are many more, I had punishment for breaking the rules. The first was being late to practice, I had an extreme ankle injury my junior year that required me to get a lengthy and complicated tape job. I was late to practice and had to roll for it like everyone did/would have if they were late to practice. The other time was for explicit language, scout D was not performing well and in turn I got yelled at (I was an O-lineman), I used some words I shouldn't have and enden having 200 yards of air raids after that practice. Believe me the punishments were fair and just to each and every player. Need I say more?
I completely understand where you are coming from and can respect that.  I will say it one more time though: There were 5 or 6 players that were dipping skoal (and were in the same room with the coaches) cursing, and breaking countless other "rules" that everyone else would get swatted for by one of the coaches.  I'm not saying it was all Coach Mathews though.  There were a couple of other coaches that let those certain players not have to do the same things everyone else was doing.  I truly, truly do see where you are coming from though because everyone on that class of '01 team was equal, got the same punishments AND kudos from coaches, and had mutual respect for every one of their brothers on that team.  It was a true team, a family.  On the other hand, class of '04 on the other hand was a far cry from that team, and it was because of the division in that locker room.
I'll quit badgering you then cause I volunteer my time as the soccer strength coach and myself, at times though they are rare,  being more lenient towards others. Though I try not to, I try to be as unbiased as I possibly can.
Then I give you kudos.  I simply wanted to give my thoughts on why my senior year playing football (along with several others) was under-cutted by a handful of players that were given special treatment.  Thanks for hearing me out.  I haven't really had an opportunity to talk about it with anyone since the immediate end of that season.
;) These insults just crack me up; especially how anyone can have kids and this poor girl (your daughter) has to have you as a dad.  Your stupidity speaks for itself.
 13.
It sounds like you need swats right now. geez give it a rest already!!!!
I'm just defending the pride I have for this team, not the coach.
 14.

I won't deny that I've seen certain players (mostly skill guys) be treated in a more respectable fashion, but I will say that a lot of us linemen (offense and defense) never got the special perks that those skill guys got.  At least 5 guys I can think of was able to sit out on Monday and Tuesday practices because of an "injury" that was never specified, they got out of wind sprints at the end of practice, and got away with dipping slowly in the locker room IN FRONT OF COACHES and be able to start on Fridays and be miraculously healed.  On the other side of things, there was another group of players that were also starters that gave more, showed up to every practice, and worked their butts off, but if they missed one day because of whatever, they sat out a quarter.  If they were caught dipping, they got swats.  If they were a minute late on the field for practice, they ran.  Certain players got certain privilages and it shouldn't have been that way.  Coach Mathews created cliques within the locker room by giving certain players certain privilages and that was our downfall.  That is facts so unless you were on varsity 2003-2004, you have no right to question what I (along with about a dozen other players who didn't get these special privilages) saw with our own eyes and feel the abandonment we felt with our own hearts that we gave everything to that man for.
Son, I've known this man since '94 when he was an assistant coach. You couldn't be more wrong. He took the time to answer my emails about this year's team while me and two others were working in Thailand. I know several kids who have played for Jeff and have NEVER heard the first bad thing about him. BTW, since you know so much about him and Pirate football you would know we went to the playoffs in 2000, not 2001. Or, are you another one of those from Lumberton stirring up trouble again? I see your a new person on the boards....
And robanadana, I am new on the boards because being an ex-Vidor Pirate under Mathews, my interest was piqued after I went to the Crosby game and saw the win.  I had to listen to how my Pirates were going to do against Montgomery because contrary to popular belief, I am still I Pirate at heart.  I had to voice my opinion in this thread because I felt like the truth had to be told on behalf of the others from my class.  I mean no disrespect to YOUR relationship to Mathews.  I, however, will stand up for what I saw with my own eyes and give this board an intuitive input in to what truly did happen behind closed doors.  If I would have meant to cause any true reputation harm to Coach Mathews, I would have done what the rest of the nation is doing and said he molested my brother or something, but that isn't the case.  The reality is it's what I witnessed and EXPERIENCED.
Summary of your statement: "I sucked it up in football and coach yelled at me so i'm gonna sit here and cry about it." Dude your pathetic.
You're not reading vp32.  I was a two year letterman and on year starter.  The year I started (senior year) I played every play of every game EXCEPT for homecoming against LC-M because I had bronchitis.  I also said nothing about having an issue with Coach yelling at me.  I said certain players had privileges and could get away with dipping and cursing in the locker room without ANY of the coaches batting an eye, yet if a player (that wasn't part of those 5 or 6 with special privileges) was caught cursing or dipping, they were immediately escorted in to the coaches office and given swats with a paddle by one of the coaches.  That is what caused a division in the locker room.  These 5 or 6 players let those privileges go to their head and the coaches (including Mathews) were just throwing gasoline on the fire with the whole situation.  We weren't a "team".  Please read these posts thoroughly and quit posting idiotic comments, that in turn, causes me to have to reiterate FACTS that were stated previously.

 18. I said STARTED on Varsity for one.  I was a two year Letterman and enjoyed my position.  When every senior player showed up the Monday following our final Friday night loss, we were all told to move our s*it out of the locker room we had worked so hard to get to.  Keep in mind "Coach Wade", that 2001 team was a playoff team (and Mathews' first at Vidor) so don't act like you know the real Jeff Mathews because we were thrown to the slums and disregarded not even 72 hours after our final game.  Out with the old, in with the new.
 19. I'm not going to get in to details, but all I will say is I played under Mathews at Vidor for four years (started on varsity for one) and I have NO respect for that man.  Once your tenure is over playing under him, you're considered as nothing of use to him.  He made me (as well as at least a dozen players in my class) feel as if four years of our extracurricular lives were wasted.  We truly felt like all the hard work and effort we gave was for nothing.  That is the God honest truth.

It looks like you guys' main weakness I saw (from the 1:00 video) is pass blocking. They better shape up with that or there will be a lot of head scratching.
