  1. 6 foot 2? That kid was was every bit of 7 foot. Well it seemed he was that tall standing against the other players. I heard a rumor he was from Bay City and wasn't suppose to be in the regionals. In my own humble opinion, Van Vleck won the majors and all of us who played Van Vleck got our butts kicked by a good team. Gulf Coast Majors have a good team. I knew we ( Hamshire-Fannett) would win the Juniors but I knew our Majors would struggle against some good teams.
  2. Ithink the tournament ran good until this incident with Gulf Coast and the alternate players. I don't understand the rules enough to explain what happened but I think the score was 37-25 in the 3rd quarter, and at that point in the game, Gulf Coast hadn't found an answer to stop Hamshire-Fannett. I was hoping the game would go on after all the fussing was over
  3. So LaPorte was able to get a little revenge when it really counted this time against Barbers Hill! I like all the competition in this tourney. Hamshire-Fannett is heading to Van Vleck today. Both Majors & Juniors play tonight. I'll be back probably Saturday night and report on the teams from our area in the Van Vleck tourney. Good luck to all the area teams
  4. And to think I didn't know a thing about Little Dribblers until this past January Let me predict the Kountze Tournment because I think I have seen all the teams in that region, except one. Juniors: Kountze will win with no problems. Too athletic Majors: Kountze will win. If Orangefield can get that big kid to rebound and control the paint, Kountze is beatable. But Kountze is going to try and beat the defense down the court. 2nd place is going to be out of TC and Orangefield. I haven't seen the seniors play.
  5. Maybe the football stadium is being improved for our soccer team and high school football games.
  6. I don't think Lamar can depend only on local talent to reach their goals. A winning team is going to fill the Montagne Center, not your few local heroes. There just isn't enough local good D-1 talent to go around. Oh yeah, it seems like Lamar made a good choice. At least he has the experience in a winning D-1 program and should know what type of players he will need to succeed.
  7. Updates: Hamshire Fannett Juniors and Seniors played Nederland last night in a pre-warm-up game before this weekend regional tournament. Both H-F JUniors and Majors won their contests. The majors had to do it in overtime. I saw the Beaumont Majors play in Kountze last week. They seem to be a solid club, more of a blue collar work ethnic and no flash.
  8. Primetime runs good tournaments. The thing with basketball tournaments is that you have two schools of thought debating on entering a particular tournament.#1 you will have teams that will wait until the last minute to see if its' worth their time to enter a tourney depending on the quality of teams entered. Then on the flip side (#2), you have weaker teams who may not want to play the "big dogs" just yet. Sometimes you can't see your weaknesses until you play someone better than you are.
  9. Contact Coach Moore at Hamshire-Fannett Elementary ( Fannett, Texas). He has a Select Team of girls, but he should be able to give you some contacts.
  10. H-F Majors PLAY Evadale tonight at the Kountze Tourney. The only other teams I would like to see play are Cleveland, Gulf Coast (East Chambers) and Anahuac Majors & Juniors. I think they are all playing Friday in Kountze.
  11. Hmm? I don't think Lumberton Juniors from last year are doing too well in the Major Division All-Stars this year. Too bad Kountze Juniors are not in the the division with Beaumont Juniors because Kountze defintely "ate their lunch" the other night." If you get a kid that knows how to hustle, block-out & rebound against the big kid playing center, Beaumont can be beaten. I've seen Bmt. play at least 3 times, and I have never seen them shoot good from the outside. But you're right, Bmt or BH should do the honors.
  12. I hope the boys in this area will take advantage of this opportunity. The AAU play is very different (more competitive) than what they will be use to, but well worth the play.
  13. Tonight at the Kountze tourney, Beaumont Juniors were defeated by the Kountze team. And Hamshire Fannett Majors beat Orangefield. H-F Juniors also defeated Nederland tonight in Nederland. Post additionasl updates if anyone have more scores.
  14. Wow! That Nederland Regional will be TOUGH! So BH split with La Porte this time!! I'm not sure if Port Neches is in this regional too, but I don't expect them or Lumberton to do too much in their regionals. Those two teams just haven't impressed me as a serious contender. HF will be playing Orangefield (I think) on Tuesday night @ Kountze.
  15. Hamshire-Fannett Majors beat Kountze tonight in a tournament hosted by Kountze. It was 37-27 in the fourth quarter with about a minute left. Not sure of the final score. Kountze definitely has more athletic players than H-F, but it didn't matter tonight.
  16. Lamar U. needs Al Barbe back for women's basketball....oops we tried that with Billy Tubbs already. Seriously, its time for Lamar to get serious and try and get the best available coach for the program. I don't think you can say the OF coach is one of the best , just because she has had good teams in Orangefield the past four years or so. Will she be able to recruit quality players to compete at the Division-1 level? Maybe or maybe not!
  17. Why is Hamshire-Fannett predicted so low in the district? How would you rate their team/ players? I've never seen them play but I'm asking because I've seen the H-F Junior High players and in my humble opinion they really lack good fundamental basketball skills at the Junior High level.
  18. I never thought about this scenario until now, but I would love to see our area teams play for the national championship. Or as someone else put it in another forum on here, the "state championship" since the teams were from Texas. :-X
  19. I didn't realize Nederland is hosting a regional tournament. That Beaumont team is tough with the big kid plugging up the middle and snatching rebounds. Beaumont also has a real good point guard to compliment the center. Tough team to beat. I like the Barbers Hill team too. They seem to be well coached and somebody out there is working with those kids on their fundamentals. I didn't see La Porte play but in pre-game warm-ups, I thought Barbers Hill didn't have a chance. But I heard La Porte were beaten.
  20. The Nederland Majors looked real strong. I remember seeing a point guard on their team that was solid. I haven't seen Buna, Kountze, or Orangefield's Majors or Juniors.
  21. I haven't kept up with youth/highschool basketball probably since the 1980's and I had no idea what level it has reached until my sons started playing Little Dribblers this past year. I didn't realize how some schools have become basketball factories and how the AAU basketball program has managed to gain so much power. Boosters are able to funnel monies to AAU teams, etc, etc, etc. But maybe this has always been happening around the country, because Texas was late in letting athletes perform outside of their high school sports. This kid Mayo was able to transfer to another high school in his senior year without residency requirements? Hmmm? I think I'll take my son out to the court today and go shoot an extra 500 jumpers for practice.
  22. I predict we haven't heard the last word behind the firing of Drake. Expect some fireworks soon.
  23. I see the pros & cons on this issue. Personally I favor a shot clock because I like to see a lot action in basketball, and not see teams use the strategy of 10 passes, then shoot. But on the other hand, I've seen some mighty teams fall because of an oppenent's game tactic of 10 passes and a cloud of dust. It's beautiful when it is put to perfection, but very frustrating when you are playing against it.
  24. I'm really probably too critical when I analyze young players of today. But I think I know who you are referring to from TC. They have a lanky guard about 5'?" (#23?)and a smaller guard (#15)who is a little shorter. The taller guard doesn't seem to use his left side too well but has some quickness. H e may be what we use to call a "streak shooter." At the Major's level he's a kid who could probably hurt you if he is on. But in two games I haven't really seen him do too much to hurt the opposing team. They do have a stockier guard (and quick) who can use the "step & "hop" move well and muscle on you inside. I think he is by far the most dangerous of the two, in my opinion. H-F had a big lead on them in their first contest, but they came back with hustle and the shorter big big guard taking control of the game. If they had one extra minute, they may have been able to pulll it out for a win. It was no contest the second time around with H-F taking control the whole game.
  25. LOL! I was only kidding! I talked with the Seniors coach @ H-F and he told me about the whipp'n your boys put on them. I get the feeling that you're inviting other teams into a lion's trap.
