***August 19 Scrimmage Schedule***
whsalum replied to Bobcatfan4life's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Both E/C and Woodville will have some big shoes to fill.E/C has tradition and a good returning QB.Woodville lost a very good QB,RB and the best wide receiver in the area so they will have to make some major adjustments. Not sure who will step for the eagles however it will probably be kids that were varsity subs last year.Good luck to both teams. -
Cinderellas? What about underachievers.......

This will be the group that decided not to put in the work this summer. They will be easy to spot, they will come out strong the first couple of series and fade against strong teams. They will win about half their games due to superior talent and weak scheduling. At Thanksgiving they will be watching games and blaming the shortcomings on everyone else. They havent figured out what the WOS and Newtons of the world have(their is no OFF season)you have to work to win.We as fans will have to wait to put the names with the results. :!: :!: :!: -
Thanks Coop. These kids parents should be proud, they are as polite a group as I have ever been around!!!!

The Southeast Texas Slam 16U club had another strong showing in the Denton Summer Shootout July 14th,15th and 16th in Denton Texas. The boys captured the consolation prize going 5-1 for the tourney. The boys defeated a Mt. Pleasnat club that was previously 27-0 for the year in double overtime and the Oklahoma Kings to garner the top seed coming out of pool play. The only loss for the tourney was in the opening round of bracket play to a strong team from Wicita,Kansas by 3 points. Highlights for the SLAM: *Stephen Moten-(Ozen) Once again had some unbelievable dunks and a beautiful touch on his jumper. He scored at will against the Colorado Red Shield in the final game. *Marcus Malbrough-(WB)and Derek Savoy(Ozen)Controlled the boards and provided valuable scoring from the post positon against some very good big men. *Ryan Weldon(HJ) Floor leader who led his team with his press breaking abilities and the ability to dish the rock where it needed to go.Also did a great defensive job. *Josh Payne(HJ) Playing possibly the best game of the tourney against the Kansas City club until he broke his hand played pressure "D" and scored on drives and the long ball. *Paul Sims(Warren) Knocking down 3 point bombs at crucial times and finishing at the foul line in pressure packed situations. *Jon Ward(Lumberton) Playing both the guard and post position after the injury to Payne did it all scoring, rebounding and playing tough defense.(Coach Henry has a kid here to build around). *Stephon Jackson(Ozen) and Scott Kearns (WB)Playing valuable minutes at the PG and guard positions contributed greatly. It was an excellent team effort winning 1 game in double overtime and several more by 5 points or less.Congratulations to the team and Coach Eric Weldon. The SLAM will travel to San Antonio to play in the San Antonio Shootout July 28th,29th and 30th.Good luck guys.

favorite player from setx....... ever
whsalum replied to Rondo's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
John Elliott from Warren Texas. Most posters may have never heard of him.Played for Warren in the 60,s,went to UT and started on a national champion defense and later was a starter for the NY Jets in the famous Joe Namath Super Bowl.In high school he was the most brutal running back I ever saw.He played defensive tackle at UT and for the Jets. -
They got a great team, it just doesnt play football.
-
This is gonna be closer than alot of people think. No one will go undefeated in this district.E/C has to be the favorite then my picks are Warren,Deweyville and Anahuac.Dont mean to knock Anahuac I just know they lost their best running back.Warren lost their QB last year in the first quarter against Wdvl up until then they were playing pretty solid. Not much depth for the Warriors at that spot.
-
I think everyone is overlooking Warren in 24aa.They have alot of folks back from last years team.Rita knocked out the game last year between them and Deweyville or we may know a little more about who has the edge this year.Warren did beat West Hardin last year and I am not sure about Deweyville and WH heads up matchup.I think both of these clubs are closer to EC than some folks think.I am also sure the injury at Anahuac will hurt the panthers chances.I look for Warren to make the playoffs again this year.

Bleed Orange,I couldnt agree more about HJ.You just dont replace players like Yoshika Spears. The young guns over there will be fun to watch, they like Orangefield will play pressure defense and will be able to shoot the ball very well.I have a feeling a lot of D1 coaches will be kickin themselves for not pickin Yo up.She was a"tweener" playing both the 2 and 3 but is the kind of player that would help turn any program around.Good luck to Ofld this year I will probably see some of these 3a games in this district.I always make the rounds in the playoffs. -

Thats true,I cant help but smile when I hear people talking about not winning district but making the playoffs.Years ago if you didnt win it you stayed put.Seems like we have watered it down now with some sub par 500 teams makin it.I watched Silsbee a couple of times last year and they will be very good.I heard they got kellums to coach them replacing Bush,if so they will still be tough. -

Meagan was the player I was referring to who was injured.H/F was not the same team after they lost her. They will be pretty good, unfortunately pretty good in this district(which will be brutal) may not be enough to even contend. -

I think HF lost their best player to graduation.I cant remember her name, but she missed the last couple of games with an injury.Kirbyville will be OK but I dont see them in the playoff hunt. There will be 1 very good club out of this district staying at home.My top picks are O-field,Silsbee,WOS and Hardin Jefferson.H/J will be the youngest of this group and may be a year away but they could be very dangerous. They have some excellent young shooters and will play solid defense. -
Whats goin on in Deweyville, sure seems to be a big turnover down there this year.I know they have a strong group coming back cant imagine people not wanting to stay and see the rewards for hard work?

He coulda been 30 and still been a freshman!!!!Just kiddin. -
Lord lets get 06/07 started before we start talking about 08/09.I hope Buna doesnt think the move down will make their route easier. The only way to get better is hard work and we will know who did that before the first of September 06.Good luck to the coogs lord knows they played in a brutal district last year.

Dont get to upset about the summer league. It is just a time to keep the kids playing.Their is absolutely nothing an official can do to control a summer league game as long as no one can foul out.The good teams adjust to the way officials call games in the regular season and the poor ones usually complain about the officiating. While they are definitely right and wrong ways to play defense neither has anything to do with the officials. Our kids have been playing in several leagues this summer and the officiating has been excellent, especially in Kountze,Coach Joubert runs a great league and should be commended for keeping all the kids in the gym. Also my hat is off to all the teams playing down there I havent seen a flagrant foul or a technical this summer.

I wasnt making E/C the underdog, they have been my preseason pick all along.I saw them play and I know they have some skill guys coming back.I was just trying to get a little info on the Panthers, returning letterman etc.
-
I have seen in most preseason polls in 24aa Anahuac has been the favorite.I have not seen them in several years, was wondering if they will still be favored over E/C if their Sr running back is out and their coach has left. How much experience did they return everywhere else?Hope the young man makes a speedy recovery. It would be a shame for him to miss his Senior season.

Dave Campbell's Local District Picks/All Classes

The times I saw Rainey ,Cruise and Lewis I considered them dominant maybe we have different opinions of dominant.I wouldnt pick against Newton if they played their cheerleaders. -
Keep us posted Coop if you hear anything, that could turn this district upside down.
-
I heard tonite the young man from Anahuac tore an ACL,anyone else heard anything else about this?I still look for Deweyville and Warren to vie for the 3rd playoff spot.I dont see an undefeated team in this district.I dont know anything about Hardin but the top 4 picks in my opinion are E/C,Anauhac,Warren and Deweyville .These teams are a whole lot closer in talent than some people realize.

I didnt watch any games in 04,I was talking about what I saw in 05.Lewis was dominant as was Rainey and Cruise. These kinds of offensive players are just about impossible to replace at the 2a level. -

Not trying to put Woodville down their just in a very tough district football wise. With the talent they had last year Newton and San Augustine would have still been the favorites.I watched them a couple of time last year and it will be hard to replace their offensive players. If they return 6 they lost half the unit.I dont put much stock in JV records on the 2-a level. While those players will move up most wont contribute much their first year.Who will be their QB this year?I knew this year they would be OK at the skill positions because Cruise,Lewis AND Rainey contributed so much their JR year.Good luck to the eagles in the fall.
