  1. 78-68 LU. Nice win for the Cards. It's been tough to win in Lafayette, so to go in there and get one is very promising.
  2. and if that happens then they deserve to be sitting at home Agreed. Hopefully we'll play well this week and have some confidence heading into the playoffs. We're gonna need it...
  3. Maybe as the 3rd place team...if they can beat Rusk. Although it doesn't sound like they deserve to go anywhere but to the doghouse. I can't ever remember feeling so humiliated. What the ____ is going on down there?
  4. I've been saying that we should milk the clock on offense all year because the defense isn't stopping anybody. I hope it works, but Carthage is very good...
  5. As for this post, I am quite sure that most if not all Jasper fans are very glad Coach Brooks is back in Jasper. Amen to that.
  6. The defense is the bigger issue to me. It was better against Nac, but that's the main reason we're 0-3 right now. Good defense will win games and that needs to be fixed NOW.
  7. Oh okay. I did hear it wrong. That's why I'm not a reporter. ;D
  8. I may have heard it wrong too, but Hardin should be doing the same thing...
  9. Just heard on KJAS in Jasper that Jasper, Newton, and Hardin counties have issued mandatory evac orders as of 9:30 CDT.
  10. Ike's crawling right now at 5-7 mph. It better speed up soon or you guys are gonna get a lot more of Ike than you're planning to. >
  11. That's a great point. Jasper has given up 100 points already and there have been whole seasons that we haven't allowed that many points. I think the spread offense takes away a lot of the toughness that Jasper relied on for so many years because it's a finesse game and defending it in practice hurts the defense in games. We ran the veer option forever along with everyone else and won with it because it took toughness and speed to make it work and also to defend it. The spread is the anti-christ and I hate it. The whole idea is that it evens the playing field and that's not something we're used to as Jasper players and fans that have followed them for the past 30 years. I say bring smash mouth football back, milk the clock, and use Jasper's athleticism and brute strength against these other teams. I know it's not the 80's anymore and maybe the game we played back then will never come back, but I can tell you that we never would have lost to Kirbyville back then and the Wildcats had good teams in those days, too. Having said all of that, Kirbyville and Coach Alvarez deserve a lot of credit. He's doing a great job with those kids and hopefully, they'll have a great year.
  12. That's cool. We don't need to be ranked. Just ignore the Bulldogs please. Let us fly under the radar...
  13. When I was in Jasper in the 80's and early 90's, Kirbyville had good teams and even made deep playoff runs. Jasper was one of the two strongest sub-5A programs in the area with West Orange being the other. Both of those schools routinely beat 5A teams year in and year out and would have beat those Kirbyville teams soundly no matter how good the Wildcats were. Why? They had depth and were at least two-deep at every position on the field. The Mustangs and Bulldogs had people on their freshman and JV squads that were just as good as almost anybody that started for Kirbyville. Both teams just ran the ball down your throat and used that depth to wear you down. My point is that Jasper hasn't had the depth that it normally has in its program from high school all the way down through 7th grade until now. We're starting to see that change since Coach Brooks returned and most of us knew that the day he decided to come back, the days of losing to smaller programs like Kirbyville were numbered. When he took over in 2000, the program was in pretty bad shape and he struggled to a 3-8 season, but the next year the Bulldogs matched their deepest run ever in going to the 4A quarterfinals with the most explosive offense in school history. Coach Lauve took what Brooks started and almost won us a state title. He deserves a lot of credit also. It looks like the same thing is happening again. Jasper was down for a couple of years, but we're coming back. It remains to be seen whether or not we'll be as good as we were back in '01 when the momentum shifted, but if we are Kirbyville won't beat us this year and it might not even be close. I like Kirbyville and Coach Alvarez is a first-class guy, but when Jasper is running on all cylinders Kirbyville can't match up. It's as simple as that...
  14. I learned a long time ago that state rankings don't mean anything. Jasper's been #1 on more than a few occasions, especially in 4A back in the 80's and what did it do for us then? Nada. Let's just win games and see if we can be #1 when it really matters. I'd rather Jasper spend the season flying under the radar, but that won't happen if we can start out strong in these next few weeks...
  15. I'll be interested to see how this one goes. Jasper's gonna have its hands full with both of these teams...
  16. Jasper I think Jasper's gonna be good, but we've always had trouble playing at your place. Why do you think we'll beat you guys?
  17. Jasper Bulldogs (Prediction: 8-2) Aug. 28 Gilmer at Tyler's Rose Stadium (Thur.)-W (Could go either way, but Jasper looks sharp right now) Sept. 5 Kirbyville-W (Going with the Dawgs @ home in a tight one) Sept. 12 OPEN Sept. 19 @ West Orange-Stark-L (Jasper has historically struggled in Orange, but it should be close) Sept. 26 Hamshire-Fannett-W (Bulldogs should be focused after WOS game. Playing in Jasper should be tough again) Oct. 3 @ Silsbee-W (Could go either way, but Jasper may be rolling by then) Oct. 10 @ Diboll*-W (Dogs should be pumped for district opener) Oct. 17 Huntington*-W (Jasper has too much talent for overmatched Demons) Oct. 24 @ Carthage*-L (Carthage should be tough at home and gets the slight edge in this even matchup) Oct. 31 Rusk*-W (Bulldogs should be improving, so bad news for Rusk) Nov. 7 @ Center*-W (Might be close as Jasper prepares for playoffs) Is this the year the Bulldogs officially arrive back on the scene among SETX's top teams or are they another year away? Jasper has gained a lot of momentum since the switch was made to Bailey at QB, but are there a couple of gamebreakers on both sides of the ball to help them make the next step?? We'll find out pretty quickly...
  18. yeah but jasper will dominate Kirbyville this year just get your POPCORN READY. I hope you're right, but it's a little too early to talk smack. Confidence is good, but there's no need to be cocky. Concentrate on Gilmer. They're enough to handle as it is.
  19. I'd have to agree that Jasper has the best shot at beating WOS. It looks like Coach Brooks has done the main thing he needed to do when he came back, which was getting kids to want to play football again. That and his coaching should make Jasper a top-notch program again that should have a good chance to win every game it plays.
  20. How long did Jasper's starters play? I'm a little concerned with the performance in the second half.
  21. 1988...Jasper vs. Forest Brook in the season opener in Jasper. We knew all day that it was gonna rain and by kickoff, it hadn't even begun. About a minute into the game, the skies opened up and it must have rained about 5" in those three hours. We always kept the field in great condition, but it was no match for the elements that night. It became 100 yards of mud. Jasper won the game 27-19.
  22. Can we please not talk about the freaking Kirbyville game until we play Gilmer? You kids that are posting need to stay focused on one week at a time. This complacency is as big a tradition as the Bulldog football program itself. Lack of focus causes turnovers and penalties that have killed just about every chance we've ever had at winning a state championship. Focus on one opponent at a time. It's the one thing that you can do off the field that will get the championship that we Bulldogs want so bad. Come on!!!
  23. I don't care who "wins" as long as Jasper's starters play well. That's all that matters in these scrimmages.
