However, the 2012 year brings new optimism in Lumberton as the Raider return ten starters in a quest to return to the 4A playoffs. Those replacements will be joining senior fullback Edmund Horn in the backfield. The receiver picture is much more settled for the Raiders as they return senior wide receivers Garrett Bourque (9 catches, 177 yards, 1 TD in 2011) and Taylor Trahan (8 catches, 188 yards, 3 TD in 2011). Senior Zach Burkhalter will anchor a line which will also feature senior Ryan Lovell and junior Mikeal Cisneros. 2012 Defense Defense: 4-3 Returning starters: 5 As was the case last year, the Raiders return five members of their 2012 defense. Junior defensive Drew Manley will be counted on to control things up front. The strength in this defense will lie in the Raider linebacker squad in which Carroll will be joined by junior inside linebacker Caleb Cook and junior outside linebacker Ian Stoute. Borque, senior safety Cody Koch and junior safety Dalton Borne will be counted on to provide leadership in the Raider secondary. 2012 Key Games Lumberton will start their season a day earlier than most as they travel to Baytown to take on Goose Creek Memorial on August 30th. The Battle of Village Creek will be renewed on September 14th when the Raiders host Silsbee. 20-4A play will begin on September 28th as the Raiders invade the Reservation to take on Port Neches-Groves and end the regular season in Beaumont against Ozen. Also helping tote the offensive load will be senior backs Austin Edmondson (honorable mention all district) and Kevin Braxton (11-1A-I newcomer of the year in 2011) and Garrett Hickman, as well as junior running back Chase Hill. Amongst those that will be pulling the load up on the offensive line will be seniors Thomas Stanley and Dakota Abraham (both 2nd team all district picks in 2011). The linebacker corp should be especially strong as Hickman, who Coach Finney describes as a solid player with a nose for the ball will be joined by senior Eddie Metcalf (2nd team all district in 2011) and junior Cody Espree. In 2012, the Bulldogs again will be under a first year coach, but that is very familiar to the Jasper area. Head Coach Darrell Barbay moves over from a successful stint in Anahuac and is prepared to continue Jasper's quest to match its glory days. This task will be made a bit tougher with the latest realignment of 3A power Carthage into the new 20-3A, but with fifteen returning starters, the Bulldogs appear up to the task. Junior Steven Walker (2nd team all-district, 67-158, 1115 yds, 16 TD) will again trigger the Bulldog offense. Jasper will have plenty of firepower on the outside as senior receivers Demarcus Collins (1st team all-district, 22 catches, 514 yards, 8 TD in 2011) and Jonavon Limbrick (2nd team all district, 5 catches, 64 yds, 1 TD) will be joined by sophomore Chris Spikes, who according to Barbay is an explosive, athletic receiver. Junior DeAnthony Cuney (1st team all district in 2011) and Haynes (2nd team all district) look to be the backbone of a strong linebacker corp. First year Coach Russ Sutherland guided the Buccaneers to a 9-3 mark and an eye opening perfect district mark in the always tough 10-2A-I. However, when that football program is started in the blue and silver shadow that covers the greater Orange area, expectations of quality play are there. In 2011, in their first year of TAPPS 6 man, Division II, the Orange Community Christian Lions easily exceeded those expectations as Coach Adam Strandberg and his charges posted a 6-4 mark, including an 85-65 win over defending state champion Brenham Christian and earned a spot in the TAPPS Division II playoffs. The success of last year, buoyed by the fact that nearly all of the starters from the 2011 squad return and an increase in participation which will see the squad increase to as many as 15-20 players this year, leaves the folks in Orange with feelings of nothing but sheer optimism. The big cogs of that offense lie in the legs of senior running back C.J. Wagner (2011 SETXsports 6 man player of the Year, 108 carries, 1,563 yards, 26 TDs) and senior fullback Alex Parrish (30 carries, 231 yds, 4 TD). However, the Lion talent does not end there. Coach Strandberg is looking for big seasons out of returning junior wide receiver Marquis Grant, receiver Joe LeBlanc, who returns after missing most of the 2011 with a neck injury suffered in Week 2, and sophomore tight end Jacob Alexander. Amron Akhtar, Ryan Tibbetts and DeAndre Jones will return to man the Lion offensive line. Look for utility man Joseph Pulido, as well as freshmen Jordan Humble, Dakota Alexander, James Cornell, Ethan Beard and Jacob Corbello to make contributions on offense. 2012 Defense Defense: 4-2 and Spread Zone Returning starters: 5 As expected, most of the guys that will be prominent on offense will see time on the defensive side of the ball as well. While Coach Strandberg will miss the contributions of the graduated Jacob Trevino, he has plenty of talent both returning and rising up on the defensive side of the ball. Parrish (96 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 forced fumbles) will lead the defense from his linebacker position. He will be behind a line that will feature Akhtar at defensive end and Grant (19 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries in only 2 games). Another linebacker that the Lions are looking for an immediate big impact from is freshman Jordan Humble, a quick player who loves contact. Free safety Wagner (61 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recover and 2 ints returned for TD) and cornerback Jacob Alexander (29 tackles, 3 interceptions, 1 returned for a TD) will anchor the CCS secondary, but expect Dakota Alexander to get some playing time there as well. Also, Strandberg will be looking for big contributions from Foster, LeBlanc and Jones on the defensive side of the ball. 2012 Special teams Foster, a strong legged kicker with a range of 45 yards in, will handle the place kicking duties. Rare punts will be handled by Jacob Alexander, who will join Wagner and Grant as the featured Lion kick returners. 2012 Key Games CCS will open its 2012 season on September 1st as they take on old friend Huntsville Alpha Omega in the Bayou Classic in Dickinson. District play again starts early for the Lions as they host Bellville Faith on September 15th and a week later travel to fellow SETX 6 man school Chester. A 3 week stretch starting on September 28th in which they play Brenham Christian, Dickinson Pine Drive and Alvin Living Stones will tell the tale on the 2012 season. The final district game is on November 10th against new district foe, Magnolia Legacy Prep. However, a fresh start with a new head coach and a number of experienced starters are giving folks in Warren a lot of reason from optimism in 2012. Once in the playoffs, Ozen did not disappoint as they bested Barbers Hill in bi-district, 40-36, and upset #3 ranked Brenham, 14-10, before being eliminated by Division II, Region III finalist La Marque, 18-6. Some have hinted that Ozen will find it hard to duplicate the 2011 accomplishments with the graduation of all-district quarterback David "Trey" Green. The Panthers enjoy that very luxury as senior running back Jakobi Jones (196 carries, 1457 yards, 17 TD rushing in 2011) returns to lead the Ozen offense. He will be getting the ball from senior quarterback Jordan Ozen (8-16, 96 yards, 1 TD in limited play in 2011). Helping Jones to carry the load on the ground will be junior Chris James (43 carries, 191 yards, 1 TD in 2011) and senior Xavier Johns (18 carries, 217 yards, 2 TD in 2011). Seniors Leeland Hamilton (16 catches, 308 yards, 4 TD receiving in 2011) and Andrew Micheal (17 catches, 379 yards, 4 TD in 2011) will lead a Panther receiving corp which will also feature senior Chandler Crawford and junior Ronnie Ceasar. Junior center Caleb Wright will return from the 2011 squad to anchor the offensive line. That line will also include senior guards Rudy Lassaint and Latyren Dobbs, as well as senior tackles Paul Brown and Deandre Moore and junior tackle Dmarko Williams. 2012 Defense Defense: 4-2-5 Returning starters: 6 The Panther defense, which surrendered 286 yards and 24.9 points in 2011, will return a good bit of experience in both the linebacker corp and secondary, but they will be a bit inexperienced up front. Vying to join returning senior defensive tackle Chris Redeaux on the defensive line will be senior tackles Louis Johnson, Dante Williams and Emmitt Gilmore, as well as junior defensive ends Myles Mouton and Raymond Ward. Leading the Panther linebacker corp will be senior Corrie Frank and junior Anthony Sylvester. Returing cornerback Kourtney Williams (2nd team 20-4A all district in 2011) returns along with senior safeties Raleigh Jones and Leroy Jackson and junior safety Tony Brown, who is already getting some attention from D-1 scouts, to anchor the Ozen secondary. 2012 Special Teams Senior Blake Norris will be handling the place kicking duties for Ozen in 2012. Hamilton, who garnered honorable mention all state honors in 2011, will handle the punting duties. James and Crawford will handle the returns for the Panthers. 2012 Key Games Ozen will begin their 2012 schedule in traditional form as they face off against West Brook in the first leg of the Beaumont Bowl series to kick off the season. To finish off pre-district play, the Panthers will venture up to Kincaide Stadium in Dallas on September 15th to face Stephenville as part of the Lone Star Classic. The Panthers will begin 20-4A play against cross-town rival Beaumont Central on September 28 (Central leads the series 6-5) and will finish with Lumberton at home on November 9th.
