DONT WORRY COOP! I GOT YOUR BACK DAWG. I agree 100% [Hidden Content] Gabriel Pruett's blog; updated Sept. 10 Gabriel Pruett The Orange Leader Something is starting to tell me Southeast Texas better prepare to get moving. Ever just have that feeling? We are waiting on the call for evacuations yet it does not take a government to call to leave for residents to be smart. Hurricane Ike keeps moving closer to our area with each update. I am starting to believe it is becoming late in the game to call for evacuations since it is aleady Wednesday and the storm is set to hit the Texas coast late Friday or early Saturday. Evacuations means the removal of 84,966 people in Orange County and another 252,051 residents in Jefferson County according to the 2000 census. That is a lot of people folks trying to get out of Southeast Texas at one time. With that many people moving out at once on Thursday and early Friday, roads will be cluttered and motorists will not be in a good mood. So if you can leave early, do so to avoid traffic and any kind of danger. Also I just do not see all these football games slated for Thursday taking place. I truly believe an evacuation will be announced at any moment and football games will not be the biggest concern in the minds of Southeast Texas residents. We can only wait to see along with government officials. -

[Hidden Content] By Jeff Cain, Ken Pishna, and Tom Hamlin/MMAWeekly.com Former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight champion Evan Tanner was found dead near Palo Verde, Calif. on Monday. He was 37 years old. His management team at the Driving Force Sports management agency confirmed his death to MMAWeekly.com. Tanner had trekked into the desert on a journey to “cleanse†himself, according to Douglas Vincitorio of Tanner’s management team. “He went out to the desert to do a ‘cleansing’ as he called it. Kind of like ‘Survivorman.’†These short trips were not new to Tanner, said Vincitorio. It is something that he has done numerous times over the years. “What we were told is that (Sheriff’s officials who found Tanner) believe his motorcycle had run out of gas, so he went to walk out in like 115- to 118-degree heat,†Vincitorio said. “He was miles away from his camp. That’s where the helicopter found him. Right now, they just think that he succumbed to the heat.†ADVERTISEMENT Lt. George Moreno of the Imperial County Sheriff’s Department has reported that Tanner set out treasure hunting on Wednesday, Sept. 3, asking friends to call for help if he didn’t return right away. Lt. Moreno says friends called the Sheriff’s Office on Friday, Sept. 5, and search and rescue teams looked for him throughout the weekend in temperatures up to 114 degrees. The U.S. Marines used a helicopter to search by air Monday morning, finally spotting a body two miles from the campground where Tanner’s belongings were found earlier, according to Lt. Moreno. While a coroner has yet to confirm the body is Tanner’s, John Hayner, the owner at Driving Force Sports, says people close to to the fighter visually identified his body at the scene. On Aug. 10, Tanner wrote a blog on Spike TV’s website, proclaiming his desire to start an adventure in the desert east of his new home in Oceanside, Calif. An avid outdoorsman and wandering spirit, he wanted to escape civilization for a while. “I’m not just going out into the desert, I’m going out into the desert to hunt for lost treasure,†he wrote. “I’m going on a pilgrimage of sorts, a journey to solitude, to do some thinking, and to pay my respects to the great mysteries.†On Aug. 16, Tanner wrote about collecting supplies for his journey, and wrote about the dangers he might face. “I plan on going so deep into the desert, that any failure of my equipment, could cost me my life,†he said. “I’ve been doing a great deal of research and study. I want to know all I can about where I’m going, and I want to make sure I have the best equipment.†Of course, this led followers of his blog to fear for his safety, as they often did when Tanner reported his frequent by-the-seat-of-his-pants adventures. In a blog dated Aug. 27, Tanner tried to calm his audience. “This isn’t a version of ‘Into the Wild,’†he wrote. “I’m not going out into the desert with a pair of shorts and a bowie knife, to try to live off the land. I’m going fully geared up, and I’m planning on having some fun.†But he also affirmed that things could go wrong if his equipment wasn’t up to snuff. “I do plan on going back pretty far, so I did mention in one of my posts that I wanted to make sure to have good quality gear,†he said. “Any failure of gear out in the desert could cause a problem.†On Sept. 2, Tanner wrote his final blog entry, documenting a training session at a facility in Oceanside. The Amarillo, Texas native was a high school wrestling stand out who won the state championships his junior and senior years despite only getting into the sport as a sophomore. He entered mixed martial arts in 1997 encouraged by friends. Tanner rose to the top of the mixed martial arts world by winning the UFC middleweight title over David Terrell at UFC 51: “Super Saturday†Feb. 5, 2005. He lost the title later in the year to Rich Franklin. Tanner, who had a career MMA record of 32-8 last competed in the UFC on June 21 losing to Kendall Grove by split decision. “He will obviously be sorely missed,†said Vincitorio. Adding, “I think that Evan would want to be remembered as a very complex man with many layers, not just a fighter.†Tanner was surely a unique personality. He’s eclectic spirit and competitive nature will be sorely missed in the MMA community.

[Hidden Content] By Jon Lane, for MMAjunkie.com It was well past 10 p.m. in Huntington, N.Y., when Matt Serra closed and locked the doors to the Serra Jiu-Jitsu Academy, a joint venture owned and operated with his brother and fellow JJ black belt, Nick. He said hello to a Suffolk County police officer patrolling the lot, climbed into his vehicle, fitted and adjusted the obligatory headset, and drove southwest to his Massapequa home. Yeah, it was late, but Serra was wired enough you’d think he downed 10 tall ones from Starbucks. When you have as much going on as him, your world is nonstop 25/8, too. Matt and Nick run two schools, the other in East Meadow, N.Y., and have grand plans to open a third. Matt hasn’t spent much time on the mat following his April 19 TKO loss to Georges St. Pierre, a rematch of when his first-round victory shocked everyone associated with the UFC and beyond. He left that second bout with St. Pierre not with the welterweight title he took from the celebrated French Canadian a year earlier, but an injury to the ulnar nerve in his right elbow. While the injury healed, Serra focused on grooming his student body to be champions and is working on a new agreement for what he called a lengthy contract with the UFC. Out of the gym, Serra’s goals are bigger. His wife, Ann, is three months pregnant. Last month, he traveled to Minneapolis for UFC 87 and signed autographs at the Mall of America. Nobody asked him about his schools, his contract, hometown hero Brock Lesnar or even fatherhood. The public cared about one thing, as does Serra: when will Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes become a reality? Fate interfered with a prior date at UFC 79 when Serra suffered a herniated disc in his lower back while demonstrating a move to a student. Talks are moving to finalize a bout for early next year, which would provide enough time for Serra’s elbow to fully heal, and for Hughes to overcome a partially torn PCL and a completely torn MCL in his left knee, which he suffered in his most recent fight, a TKO loss to Thiago Alves. Serra winning the welterweight title was a dream. Fighting Hughes is his destiny. If he beats Hughes, the two will forge into one. “Everybody wants this fight to happen, from the fans to the organization to myself to Matt Hughes to Matt Hughes’ wife,†Serra told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “I truly believe in my heart this is going down. When it does, this will be a great fight. I’m putting my heart and soul into training to fight this guy. People love rivalries, especially if it’s legit.†You know their history. Incensed with Hughes’ proclivity to annoy beyond the point of good-natured ribbing, Serra’s dislike for his opposing coach during “The Ultimate Fighter 6†simmered past 212 degrees and created a score that had to be settled in one place, the octagon. Serra’s words accelerated to five miles a minute over the mere prospect of this fight, a Renzo Gracie-trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert with underrated striking ability against a nine-time welterweight champion and future UFC hall of famer. Those words weren’t minced either. Forget strength vs. strength. Ignore the tale of the tape. There’s not just heat; there’s unmitigated hatred. “You’re going to pay me to fight this jerk? Are you kidding me?†said Serra, voice rising. “You’re paying me this amount of money to punch this guy in the face?†Look at it this way: If you’re a Yankees fan, you hate the Red Sox, and vice versa. Nobody sits on the fence with Serra vs. Hughes. If you love Serra, you hate Hughes, and vice versa. You’re not pulling for both in a fight neither can afford to lose. Hughes (41-7) is off two straight losses, turns 35 in October and said after the Alves fight, he has one more in him, and that’s against Serra. Serra, 34, is only 9-5, but that’s deceiving. He went the distance in losses to B.J. Penn, Karo Parisyan and Din Thomas (split), and he was just nine seconds from a decision with Shonie Carter before he was KO’d with a spinning back fist. He needed a split-decision win over Chris Lytle to win “The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback†that earned Serra the Rocky Balboa-like title shot against GSP. That adversity gained through strength made him a cult hero. It’s easy to dismiss Serra’s first win over GSP as a fluke, easier to forget that he knocked down Parisyan at UFC 53. Yet, he’s the likely underdog versus Hughes not because he’s Matt Serra, but because his opponent is Matt Hughes. And the last thing Hughes wants is to end his career with three straight defeats, the last to someone with whom he shares a hate-hate relationship. “I love being the underdog,†Serra said. “I fit that role real nicely. I don’t need any extra motivation for this fight. I genuinely do not like him, and I know feels the same about me. “I’m expecting a very dangerous Matt Hughes who wants to go out on a high note. I’m not going to let him.†It’s a fight Serra knows he cannot lose. It’s a vendetta that’s too damn important, and time will tell if Serra’s skill set perfectly matches his dedication and desire. Then again, Serra KO’s conventional wisdom when he shocked St. Pierre, pounding the champion’s ribs and midsection before finishing him with crushing combinations to the head. And believe it or not, Serra, the first American to be awarded a black belt under Gracie’s tutelage, says his jiu-jitsu has yet to reach its peak. “I think I’m a bad matchup for Matt Hughes,†Serra said. “I think he’s a one-trick pony, and he’s not good at that one trick. If people think that he’s putting me to the mat like GSP did, he’s not one-third as explosive as GSP. He’s not putting me down like that. If he does, I have way better jiu-jitsu than I’ve shown in my last fight. There’s so much stuff, and I want to show that if he does put me down.†Fighting so consumes Serra’s life that it’s the only thing he’s known and still does. “Tell me who won the last Super Bowl and I have no idea,†Serra admitted shortly before the native Long Islander was reminded that the Giants pulled a Serra-GSP-like upset in Super Bowl XLII. Even if Serra defeats Hughes and makes his point, there are no plans on riding off into the sunset. His allure to fight is that strong. It’s mightier than creating the next champion, equally hip with becoming an action figure (“I’m going to be a freakin’ action figure. That’s going to be the coolest thing in the world,†Serra said). And almost as powerful as becoming a first-time father. “Whenever it gets to the point where it’s not fun for me and I’m not enjoying it, then maybe I’ll think about retiring,†Serra said. “As long as there are fights that excite me, I’ll be fighting, man.†Forgive Serra if he has tunnel vision. There’s a blood feud that must be completed, and should he be successful, he won’t just defeat Hughes. He’ll crush him mentally and spiritually, and for Serra it’ll be worth more than welterweight gold. “The only thing I want to retire is Matt Hughes,†Serra said. “I plan on retiring him.â€

[Hidden Content] Dana White says he has “resolved all†problems with Randy Couture John Morgan, MMAjunkie.com With a near-year-long, well-documented legal dispute apparently resolved, UFC President Dana White today officially announced the return of heavyweight champion Randy Couture (16-8 MMA, 13-5 UFC) to the organization. Couture will defend his UFC heavyweight title against WWE import Brock Lesnar (2-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 91 on Nov. 15. The bout, reported by MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) last week, will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas rather than Portland, Ore., as previously expected. The winner of that bout will then take on the winner of the December title affair between UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir in order to unify the UFC’s heavyweight belts. “We had some problems with Randy,†White admitted during today’s media call. “We’ve resolved them all. He has always been the heavyweight champion of the UFC. It took us some time to get everything straight, but I think we’re all good now and ready to move forward.†Couture resigned from the organization in October, with two fights remaining on his contract, over what he perceived to be a lack of respect from UFC officials, issues over his pay, and the UFC’s inability to sign then-top free agent Fedor Emelianenko. Couture planned to wait for the 18-month deal to expire so he could compete in an outside promotion, but UFC officials contended that the contract wouldn’t be fulfilled until the two fights were completed. That matter—as well as a dispute over his employment/promotional contract and Couture’s decision to sign a fight contract with HDNet Fights earlier this year—had been tangled up in the court system. Today, White said that Couture’s old contract was scrapped in favor of a brand new three-fight deal with the UFC. “No matter whether Randy wins or loses (the bout with Lesnar), he will still be in the UFC,†White said. White said his recently tumultuous relationship with Couture has not suffered any long-term damage despite the differences between the two over the past 12 months. “I think everybody knows my personality and how I get,†White said. “When I don’t like somebody, I make it very clear that I don’t like them. … Through this whole thing, I never hated Randy or said anything really bad about Randy. “The worst thing I think I said about Randy through this whole thing? I think I called him confused. That’s it. That’s pretty mild for me. I like Randy. I always have. This whole thing never made sense to me.†Couture remains steadfast in his desire to face Emelianenko, the current WAMMA heavyweight champion. White said he will do everything in his power to bring Emelianenko into the UFC—despite White’s numerous claims that Emelianenko was “completely irrelevant.†“[Couture] has made it very clear how bad he wants to fight Fedor,†White said. “We’re going to do everything in our power to make a Fedor fight happen.†Arranging a fight between Couture and Emelianenko may still prove difficult. “We’re not going to mess with anybody’s contract,†White said. “[Emelianenko] is under contract right now to another promotion. If he becomes available or something can be worked out with that other promotion—obviously everybody knows how crazy we are about protecting our contracts; we would never do that to somebody else. “If the Fedor fight can be made, if he becomes available or whatever, then absolutely we would love to make the Fedor fight.†Before any bout with Emelianenko can be considered, Couture must first get past the massive Lesnar. Couture insists he will not allow any future plans to cloud his focus on the task at hand. “Obviously [Lesnar] is a great big guy,†Couture said. “On the ground or standing he poses some interesting problems. I’ve got to go to work and find the answer to those questions.â€
