1. This saturday the 2 #1 ranked teams in 1A divisions 1 and 2 will play in Athens at 7.  Cayuga is without Caleb Summerville and i believe they are missing a few key players due to injury.  Cayuga lost to Argyle and Navasota at the Whataburger tournament.  Slocum beat Grand Saline, Grapeland and #7 Miller Grove and lost to MP Chapel Hill at Martins Mill tournament.  These 2 teams are very familiar with each other, having played against each other 2 years ago which Cayuga won a close one (also play every summer in summer league).  I know Coop is very interested in this game, he loves these small school matchups.  I know catman has an opinion also, what do yall think, who wins?
2.
Can't believe we haven't heard from beeninikes on this one! If Orangefield loses to Sabine Pass, it's time for some soul-searching in Bobcat Country!
I agree with that statement.  I know Orangefield hasnt been very consistent this year and they would definitely qualify as one of the biggest underachievers so far this year.  That being said, i'm a little surprised at the predictions on this thread, especially from CATMAN and whsalum (whose opinions i respect).  I always like to look at Coops spreads (and argue with him about a few of them, lol) and they are usually pretty close.  Orangefield normally doesnt blow teams out, so i dont see them covering the 30 pts, but i'd be very surprised and disappointed if they lost.
3. I thought i'd point out to yall that these 2 teams are playing each other tuesday night.  If you are a fan of 3A girls basketball, you should keep an eye on this game.  Both of these teams are in the same district in region 3.  So OF and HJ will likely have to beat at least one of these teams to get out of the region.
4. Since you guys like to argue so much, take look at these rankings and tell me what you think.  You got to see some of these teams this weekend, and maybe of youve seen or heard of some other teams before that. 15. I posted this on eastexsports and i thought i'd post it on here for you small school fans or anyone interested.  This article talks about the tabc ranked #1 and #2 ranked teams in east Texas, Slocum and Laneville.  These 2 team have been the past 2 state champions and are in the same district and same region. [Hidden Content] Famous For A Small Town: 1A Giants Think Big By SHANE STARK Staff Writer Prior to the 2008 season, the Slocum and Laneville boys basketball teams had little history with one another. No doubt, things change. When the UIL season begins Monday, Slocum's Mustangs and Laneville's Yellowjackets will officially embark on a race to district, regional and state supremacy. Slocum is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A Division II by the Texas Association of Basketball coaches, plus is the defending state champion. Laneville is rated second by the TABC, plus is only two years removed from a state crown. Note to East Texas hoops fans: The Mustangs and Yellowjackets meet Jan. 23 and Feb. 16. "It's going to be extremely hyped up," Slocum coach Jay Bruce said. "It will be exciting." In last year's regular-season meetings between the teams, Laneville prevailed each time -- 47-45 and 59-49 -- en route to the league title. However, the Mustangs avenged the loss with a 58-56 victory against the Yellowjackets in the regional final to punch their first ticket to Austin. "It still kind of stings a little bit," Laneville all-state senior GerRaylon Carey said last week. "We are wanting to play them again so we can go back to state." The success shared by Slocum and Laneville is a testament to 24-1A Division II's overall strength. Similar to the NCAA's Big East Conference, high-profile matchups are on tap almost every game night. Just call it the Little East. Over the last eight years, the league has been represented at state six times. In addition to Slocum and Laneville (twice), Kennard, Neches and Oakwood have also made trips. Last season, Oakwood went 0-14 in league action but played Slocum to within 10 points in both of their meetings. "When you look at our district, there's a lot of tradition in basketball," Laneville coach Brian Nichols said. "On any given night, the communities are going to support their basketball because that's the only thing to do in town. We are at the smallest level, so there's a lot of pride in it at the community level." A Championship, The Yellowjacket Way Laneville, which won back-to-back titles in 1992-93, is a basketball-crazed community in Rusk County. In 2006-07, the Yellowjackets returned to prominence by winning the regional title and making their first state appearance in almost two decades, but eighth overall. They fell by nine points in the championship game to Nazareth, but set the foundation for better things to come. Laneville returned to the University of Texas' Frank Erwin Center the very next season, and cut down the nets following their 56-50 victory against Goodrich. And just like Slocum last season, the Yellowjackets finished second in district that year but wound up tops in the land. Though the teams hadn't joined the same district yet, one of the Yellowjackets' five losses came against Slocum. "I wanted this for them. Any coach wants to win a state championship, but after being so close to winning last year, it hurt the kids to taste that," Nichols said in the postgame news conference after the final. This season, Laneville returns eight players who experienced the title. In addition, those players went through the agony of last season's end result. "It hurt bad," Carey said. "We're still thinking about it and are working on it." A Championship, The Mustang Way Slocum, which fell to 1A Division II during the latest UIL realignments and reclassifications, is located in Anderson County and is building a winning tradition in Dr. James Naismith's game. In addition to the boys team, the Slocum girls have experienced success and enter the season ranked No. 11 by the TABC. The boys went into last season ranked second. However, the Mustangs at times stumbled during non-district and experienced trouble finding an answer to Laneville in district. That all became a distant memory in the regional final, though, when junior post Randall Thomason sank a pair of free throws in the waning moments to send the Mustangs to victory. The next stop was the final four, which Slocum capitalized on by beating five-time state champion Nazareth -- four-time this decade -- 45-27 in the championship game. "It was awesome," Bruce said. "When we got into the playoffs, we had a tough season so it was one game at a time. We never thought a lot about anything like winning state. We just got really hot in the playoffs." Slocum returns six lettermen and three starters, but lost leading-scorer Jared Lane to graduation. Thomason, a 6-4 senior post who averaged 13 points a year ago, is expected to take over the leading-scorer role for a team that's experienced, balanced and deep. "I feel like there will be a lot of pressure on us," Thomason said. "A lot of us just have to keep our heads straight and focused, and act like (the state title) never happened."

20. To answer a few questions about earlier comments in this thread, no Spurger, BS, or SP are not ranked in the top 10. I only posted the teams listed in the top 10. I would check TABC's top 20 rankings that come out sometime this month. I imagine 1 or 2 of those teams could be ranked, i dont know about Big Sandy, they lost some starters from last year. The reason for the difference between the rankings for Slocum and Laneville ranked in state and district have to do with the voting. The coaches around the state voted for Laneville ahead of Slocum but the coaches in Slocums district voted Slocum to win the district. This magazine is done by RV Baugus, i believe he is the only one involved in it. He asks all the coaches to send in info for their team and district so he can put this magazine together. You can usually tell by reading each team preview whether or not a coach sent him some info on their team. I imagine some districts he doesnt get very much information so you cant really blame him if the predictions dont seem accurate. Most of them i think you may disagree on a few teams but i think overall he does a pretty good job.

23. I'm watching Sportsnation today on ESPN2, which is a new show that talks about sports and a variety of topics. They have a segment called weird web stories, where they show interesting videos of fans and people. They showed about a 5 second clip of Fox 4's meteorologist Nick Kosir rapping the forecast. I went back and found the youtube video and watched it, its pretty good. Did anyone see this today on TV or have they seen this video before?
24. [Hidden Content] This was a well deserved award for Wandy, going 4-0 with a 0.75 era. I know he has missed some time but, the fact that he has a 2.63 era this late in the year is pretty impressive. If you look at his career stats, his era has gone down steadily over the past 3 years. I know hes already 30, but if he can stay off the DL, i think he can give the astros some productive seasons over the next few years.
25. Roy Oswalt currently stands at 134 wins with one more start before the all star break. Oswalt has 2 years left on his contract after this season, plus a club option for 2012 (which im sure the Astros would pick up if Oswalt is still pitching well). I've heard Oswalt has said he will retire after his contract expires. But if he is still pitching at a high level when his contract is up, i hope he will continue to pitch. If he pitches well over the next 3.5 years (including club option), which is the length of his remaining contract, i imagine he will be close to the 200 win plateau, which i'd like to see him get. Every year he starts slow and people say hes done, then he picks it up after the first couple months and pitches like we expect. I think hes still got some left and can pile up some more wins if he can actually get some run support. But what do yall think?
