Patrick Moore for Dodd City makes all state as a junior. He was the best player on the #4 team in state in Dodd City that went undefeated in the regular season. I saw him play once and he was pretty legit. Yet he's not good enough to make it this year. Although there is a player on this list whos team didnt even make the playoffs. Can anyone take a wild guess at who the 1A-II region 3 all state coordinator was??
-
Burkeville will have to contend with Michael Anderson for Laneville, who is one of the best players in the region and will probably be all state. I saw him play against a very good #13 Saltillo team this year and he put up around 25 pts and they had no answer for him. Laneville is very athletic for a 1A-II team and pressures the ball a lot. It wouldnt shock me if Laneville somehow won the region, if there was a team to beat Dodd City it would be someone like Laneville.

Yea but half of Martinsvilles games are vs teams like Gary, apple springs and centerville, Burkeville came out of the toughest district in the region, and IMO idt Martinsville is any better than leggett or spurger or even goodrich. So Bkv has the edge in this one
I'm failing to understand the argument here. How can you criticize Martinsville's predistrict schedule, when outside of Silsbee, the 2 best teams Burkeville played before district were in Martinsville's district. Burkeville lost to Kennard and # 9 Wells, and they lost to #9 Wells by 30 pts (74-45). Kennard was the 4th place team in Martinsville's district. Burkeville also lost to Broaddus who Wells beat by 30 pts. Did I mention that Martinsville beat Wells once in district? Kennard took Wells to overtime and Chireno, the 3rd place team in Martinsville's district, beat Martinsville on feb 15. With 2 top 10 ranked teams, I think you could make the argument that 23-1A-II is just as good as 24-1A-II. 18-1A-II may have been the toughest district of all of them though with #4 Dodd City, Roxton, and Miller Grove (plus Ector who MG had to beat in a playoff). I would not call Martinsville's schedule weak either. They beat Tenaha (who just beat 3A Center) who won 22-1A-I and has be ranked and could be in the regional tournament. They played Tenaha (22-1A-I), Woden (22-2A), Gary(22-1A-I), Elysian Fields (20-2A), who are all playoff teams and only lost to Woden. I would speculate Martinsville is pretty close one way or another to the top 4 in 24-1A-II but I dont know how you could give Burkeville the edge by any measurement or standard given. -

I started doing projections for the playoffs just to see what it looked like. I based it on current standings now plus tiebreakers, schedule, some guessing and gut feeling. I realize that some of this information may change in the next couple weeks since some districts have only played oone round of district play. I may update in a week or 2 if or when some of the standings change. Some of the district information was kinda hard to find, so if you have some information to add on a district for these brackets, send me a PM. I couldnt find much on districts 17 and 20 in 1A-II, so if you have any info on that let me know.

I think Burkeville Should be in the top 25
Up until their big win over Leggett, Burkeville really didnt have any big wins over any other notable teams that would get them recognition. They lost to Silsbee by 50, they lost to 1A-II Wells by 30, they lost to unranked 1A Broaddus by 30 and lost to unranked 1A-II Kennard. I just dont think that resume is good enough to warrant a ranking. -
Being in the stands, yes this was an upset. When ever a #22 beats a #5 team, it is an upset.
Spurger and WS were very competitive throughout the first half. If I recall it right, the spread never got above 3 or 4 points. From the beginning of the 3rd qtr, Spurger just did not stay in the game that played in the first half. Severalof us commented that Spurger offense was very high and could not get WS to get away from their post. Spurger would not take an outside shot and would attempt to pass into the post to where it would get stolen. WS played very well and consistent. The point spread drifted up to 10 and then Spurger went into "force it" mode where WS took advantange of the turnovers. Spurger played a very odd game for them. They just did not look "together" and did not gel at all.
Hats off to WS, they played very well.
Spurger is #5 in 1A-II and West Sabine was #22 in 1A-I, which is a higher classification so I wouldnt call this an upset. Spurger is ranked high because of their run to the state tournament last year and then dropping down classifications. There are other teams in the region though I would say deserve to be ranked ahead of them based on their early season resume, like Dodd City and Laneville. Rankings dont many very much especially this early in the season, but I would expect to see Spurger to drop a little over the next couple weeks. Their region is very tough and will be hard to win (and their district too) so it should be pretty interesting to see how it plays out. -

Here a link to the poll I posted on eastexsports, go and vote for who you think is the best district race in east Texas. I copied and pasted my post on the link below:
What is the best district race in east Texas? There are several good ones here. You got 2 top 5 teams in 1 district in New Waverly and Crockett. New Waverly had another run at the state tournament and Crockett went a couple rounds in 3A. You have maybe the best 2 teams in 1A-I in one district in Martins Mill and Cayuga who played for region 3 last season. Miller Grove and Dodd City lost to the 2 regional finalists last year and return a lot of players. Slocum and Grapeland split in non district action last season before being reunited in the same district again this year and both should be strong again. Martinsville drops down to 1A-II and should give Kennard a battle for 23-1A-II. 21-2A will be tough every time Arp, Frankston, and West Rusk play each other. 19-3A features a couple state ranked teams in Mexia and Groesbeck. There are some districts I am not quite familiar with so there may be some districts i'm leaving out. Tell me what district races you are looking forward to... -
http://eastexsports.com/forum/index.php?topic=5222.0
Go check it out, there are tons of schedules all over East Texas for you to see. There are many districts on there of interest to SETX, like 24-1A-II, 24-1A, 22-2A, 18-3A, and 22-3A, and so many more. If you have a schedule of a team that I dont have or see something that needs to be corrected, please send me a message on here or on Eastexsports. -
If you are strictly speaking of our area teams, I see no one winning a state title.
Of all the teams in the state, these are my picks for state titles:
5A Fort Bend Bush
4A The Colony
3A Lubbock Estacado
2A Hallettsville
1A DI Clarksville
1ADII Paducah
AAW, I dont know anything about Paducah, but I'm surprised you didnt pick Bronte to win 1A-II, since they moved down from 1A-I to 1A-II, returning their best players, and you watched them take Cayuga to the wire in the state championship game in the drum. I like the Clarksville pick, but I also think Cayuga or Martins Mill could win that very tough region 3. -

Thanks for the post. I made the statement on the other site so I will make it here. Their logic is hard to understand, they have H-J ranked higher than Silsbee, yet they have the Tigers picked as the district favorite?????
To answer your question, I think the top 10 poll is voted on by all the coaches in the state while the district picks are only voted on by the district coaches. Another example of this is 1A-II Leggett is ranked in the top 10 but only ranked 3rd in district, and the 1st and 2nd place teams arent even ranked in the top 10.
-
I just got the new Texpreps Magazine for this basketball season. I posted the Top 10's for all classes and also all the district picks for east and southeast Texas. In the link below is where it is all posted. You can go there for all your east Texas basketball info. Over the next month I'll be posting full schedules, and some point in the season will start 1A-5A rankings. Also there will be scores and standings throughout the season.

A friend posted this on FB:
Where does Halladay rank among the great modern pitchers: Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Schilling, Beckett, Johnson, and Clemens?
Roy still has some years left to catch up with those guys numbers. If he hadn't been hidden in Canada for all of those years, this argument may be a little different.
I'm sorry, but Beckett doesnt belong on the list of guys you just mentioned. Beckett just finished his 9th full season and has only racked up 112 wins and only has pitched 30 starts 3 times in his career. Beckett is not reliable during the regular season, he's always hurt. Beckett is hyped because he had a few excellent postseasons, but you have to do more than that in the regular season to be considered an all time great. I would replace him with Roy Oswalt, who entered the league around the same time and is 150-83 and a career era thats almost a full run lower. Since he's entered the league, he ranks top 5 in wins, era, winning %.
To answer your question though, its always about longevity for the HOF, but Roy Halladay is definitely on a fast track to the Hall of Fame. If he contributes to a Phillies World Series win, and can have about 3-4 more really good seasons, hes a lock for the HOF. -
The Astros just lost 2 long time players that were cornerstones of their franchise. I think both wouldve liked to finish their career in Houston but i also think both wanted a shot at one more title and i cant fault them for it. Both seemed to express interest in possibly coming back to Houston before they retire. Berkman has always lived in Texas so i imagine he'll want to come back as soon as he can. Oswalt is still 1 win away from the club record and i really think he wanted and wants to break it. If i were voting on the poll, i may be on Oswalt over Berkman. While Berkman has more ties to the club with his hometown, he plays a position that has been filled by Brett Wallace while Oswalt plays a position that has 5 spots in a rotation. I think Oswalt has a little more incentive to come back with the club record in wins still in reach. What do you think though?
-
I know this was a couple nights ago, but did anyone see Carlos Gonzalez's cycle against the Cubs? He hit a walkoff home run on the first pitch to the upper deck in the bottom of the 9th to complete the cycle. I was watching it live on WGN and jumped out of my seat when it happened (Carlos Gonzalez is on 2 of my fantasy teams, lol). I just heard though that he is the first lefty in MLB HISTORY to get all 4 hits for the cycle off lefty pitchers. This guy probably shouldve been an all star and is a superstar in the making. Just wondering if anyone noticed this over the weekend.
-
I got to see the 9th inning of Braden, Halladay, and Jimenez this year, and this game seemed to have all the makings of a perfect game/no hitter with the great catch in the 9th by Austin Jackson. You figure on a close call, like Anibal Sanchez's no hitter on the final play of game a few years back, they would give him the benefit of the doubt. He just blew it. I wonder now with all this recent umpire controversy, if the talk of instant replay will come back. With today's technology, it's hard to argue against it now...
