There are guys like that all over the state of Texas that are willing to commit to that.  The point you're not getting in saying exactly what you just posted is contradictory.  "History dictates...but if someone commits..." the people in charge of hiring or firing have to realize that; not the guy signing the contract extensions.

I know of a guy that was a holdover from Howard's staff that would have done EXACTLY what you're talking about and the powers that be wanted to bring in someone that had a track record with the supt.  The guy I'm in reference to wanted to be there and would have fallen on the sword for any of those kids.  That's not a stab at Bass, but again, those who make decisions there.

I'm also going to ask you this.  Is it more imortant to win or have fun?  Isn't teaching kids how to battle through adversity what those life lessons are all about?  Are the life lessons you're wanting supposed to be sitting around a camp fire singing Kumbaya while someone is teaching them as long as things are fun and that life will be ok?  Is it ok for ALL of them to be taught those lessons or just the ones with or without the last name?

I'm not saying winning can't be fun, but how do you teach a group of individuals how to win without instilling discipline and mental/emotional toughness with it all being "fun"?  The answer is you can't fully have fun while you're teaching life lessons.  People only learn from negative self-experiences to be able to empathize with the things they're learning.  Bottom line unless the community is willing to bring a guy in and let him grow the program they're either going to keep attracting guys that are young and just trying to get the head coach title on his resume or guys that are burned out.

I know the exact guy you're talking about and he would have done a great job just never got a shot. All of the things you stated have merit. I'm not going to go question by question but we can agree and disagree on how to run a program. Tarkington community is an interesting one to say the least.

I wish the guy nothing but luck.  He knows the right people in SETX and has the right connections to get another head gig.  I hope he ends up like John Snelson because it will further prove my point that there are successful coaches out there that have been in T-Town and that Tarkington WILL NOT do the things that they need to in order to try and be successful.

I have never lived in Tarkington or remotely close to Tarkington whatsoever.  If you go back and read my previous post instead of drooling over the chance to defend someone you'll see why I think the way I do about Tarkington.  In fact, according to Google Maps my house is exactly 261 miles from T-Town.

When you're fighting history and unsupportive community (in terms of support for football) I get your point. My point is success in Tarkington cannot be measured in wins and losses unfortunately. Competitiveness and kids enjoying the game and learning life lessons should be more of the focus and if they get a coach that can focus on those things and they stay long enough then the wins will come just takes a special person to commit to such a task

The 1st comment was directed at him, the rest was directed to the community at large.  If you mean by making the program better by not making the play-offs the 2 years he was there with a more talented group than Tarkington has than I guess you're right; he did leave it off better.

Kids actually enjoying football again and being around the coaching staff and speaking positively about things was a change. It did not equate to wins and losses (losing an entire offseason to COVID didn't help) but overall it became a better place because he was there. But keep going off you obviously know it all.

A guy that m-f's his kids for motivation at half time?

It's more than just a head coach; Nick Saban would get his brains bashed in there.  The community wants someone to fix the athletics problem there with certain kids getting the accolades and other kids put on the back burner; and the kids they want with the accolades are babied and coddled at home and told they're the best out there cause cousin, or brother, or uncle was an exceptional athlete there (even though he wasn't mediocre anywhere else).

I'm pretty sure Tarkington started to create a "utopian" society and has ended up the way it is.  I distinctly remember walking out of their gym in 7th grade after a basketball game and hearing one of the elder people say "they just won cause of dem black kids"...so if that's what's being up out there they're getting built in excuses

You're a clown bro. Bass actually left Tarkington in a better place than it was before he got there.

Porter beat Crosby and Dayton throwing the ball to #2 Carney. He had 17 catches for 445 yards and 5 tds combined in those two games. He played against New Caney, #6 is the one that didn't. I never though Porter was very good because their makeup was so fragile, they have to throw the ball down the field at a high completion percentage to be effective. They can't run the ball and their defense isn't very good, reminds me a lot of Holley's Kingwood Park teams that were good with Henderson but would get blown out with just one player missing.

I agree with everything else you said though, I think BH blows Porter out. Especially if the kid opposite Carney doesn't play again this week.

The defense is good enough to hold Crosby, Humble, and NC to their lowest point totals on the season. Their defense is actually pretty good. I think BH struggles with athletic secondaries which with the exception of 10 from BH none of their other WRs are going to stretch the field. NC took away 10 from BH and they did very little on offense. So just as you say take away 2 from Porter, if you take away 10 from BH and they struggle offensively. Should be a good game I don't see either team winning by more than a score. It will definitely not be a blow out as you are predicting.

I am not terribly familiar with either Porter or New Caney.  I am going to the game this Friday though and I was looking for some information on the two teams.  If anyone with some knowledge would be willing to shed some light on the game that would be awesome.  Who has the advantage at each position/position group?

    • QB
    • RB
    • WR
    • OL
    • DL
    • LB
    • CB/S
    • Special Teams
    • Coaching

What does New Caney have to do to win the game?

What does Porter have to do to win the game?

One or two players to look for on each team.

    Again, I appreciate the responses.

Very interesting match up this week. New Caney has beaten everyone they were supposed to beat up until this point and Porter has beaten everyone they were supposed to beat and upset a good Crosby team (I know they had three starters out get over it) So here is my input after seeing both teams play numerous times.

    • QB- Porter- Jake Hall very accurate takes care of the ball and makes plays in crunch time
    • RB- New Caney- Allison very skill runner tough to bring down and fast
    • WR- Porter- Carney he in my mind is the best WR in the district aside from Netherly who is at QB
    • OL- New Caney nothing overly big but they get after you and they understand their assignments
    • DL- Porter- 44 is a beast and is unblockable at times and 40 gets after it and uses speed in the pass rush game
    • LB- WASH- both LB crews play fast and downhill and tackle well
    • CB/S- WASH- Porter based on overall athleticism but are prone to a big play. New Caney based on technique and assignment they keep everything in front of them very well.
    • Special Teams- Porter they have great kick coverage ability on both kick off and punt and two very dangerous return men (not that NC doesn't have Allison back there he is dangerous as well) just think Porter Special teams are better.
    • Coaching- I have to give the nod here to Holley the way he has those kids believing is a special thing and this group of seniors will be ready Friday night.

What does New Caney have to do to win the game? Score touchdowns in the redzone Porter has done a great job of not allowing TDs in the redzone. Also they must win the turnover battle very cliche I know.

What does Porter have to do to win the game? Limit the big plays by New Caney they like to score early and often and sit on the lead and force the other team into mistakes. Must run the ball effectively and also take care of the ball.

One or two players to look for on each team.

#10 and 77 for NC both could have a big impact in the game one on offense one on defense.

#15 and 22 for Porter 15 plays safety and also gets put in on offense and is a return man he is a big play waiting to happen. 22 plays WR and can be an X factor working the middle of the field in the NC secondary.

Should be a packed house and a great game Friday night! In the words of Bart Scott CANT WAIT!!

Dayton's defense was lights out against the run in the Porter game and we were up 17/10 in the first half. Porter wasn't even close as being in the same class as Friendswood.  FW always had a good running game to complement their passing game as well as a stout defense unlike Porter. Dayton was clearly the best team on the field  vs. Porter, 22 first downs vs. 11 - Styner had a phenomenal game at RB with over 200 yds rushing. To Porters credit they came out and made half-time adjustments and exploited a weakness' and put 30 points on the board this should of never happened ! 30 points from a mediocre team that a BH team will kill with their first year coach. This years Bronco team has plenty of talent and should be making a decent run in the playoffs instead they get to sit home and play video's, but that's ok because we all can just hold hands and sing Kum Ba Yah and ride off into the sunset for five more years.( if I see a dramatic improvement in coaching I'll be the first one to give credit where credit is due ,but I'm not going to sit back for another 5 years and watch the good kids of Dayton suffer like I did for Hancock.)

Well that mediocre team is 5-0 and undefeated in district while beating the likes of Crosby and Dayton so before you start bashing a program on the rise worry about your own program on the decline. The broncos have alot of talent on their team and that was their best game of the season, Porter is talented as well and made the big plays when they needed to. Good luck with Crosby I doubt it will be much of a ball game.

This is a huge game for Dayton. Porter still has Crosby, BH , NC and Splendora left to deal with. If Dayton can win this and get a little majic (Like they always seem to do) Dayton still has a shot at the 4th spot to keep the streak alive!

Actually they beat Crosby so theres that. Humble is the team instead of Crosby. Porter is for real very talented offense and a very scrappy defense. Should be a good one on Friday I think Porter keeps it rolling and gets one step closer to a playoff berth.

Dude, you guys played Kingwood Park, a team that has a good chance of going 0-10 this year. Can't really judge Porter until October when they play Dayton, Splendora, and NC.

If you havent seen them play then you cant talk. They beat Crosby that wasn't a fluke. This post is comical because it says Splendora all they have done is beat an overrated Dayton team that will be lucky to get in the playoffs.
