Alice vs PAM

In high school football, there are good teams and great teams. The Port Arthur Memorial Titans are even better than the latter... they’re a really great team. Even in an East Texas region known for producing Div. I caliber college football prospects, the Titans are favorites to win the District 21-5A crown and play well into November.

They’re a dominating force, especially for a team like Alice which has struggled so far.

“They were good last year, and this year they look even better,” Alice coach Chris Soza said. “They’re fast and very athletic. They’re predicted to have a better season than last year, and judging by their scores so far, they seem better.” * Memorial is 2-0 after beating Beaumont Central, 42-14, and Ozen, 45-8.

With quarterback Terrence Singleton in the backfield, the Titans proved just how explosive they can be in the win against Ozen. Singleton, a Baylor commit was efficient and effective, completing 14 of 15 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns. Singleton spread the ball around too. Jhajuan Seales had four catches for 93 yards. Aerian Jackson had three for 83. John Leday has three catches for 70 yards.

This was a week after passing for 261 yards against Central in the season opener.

Running back Nate Holmes, an Arkansas commit, had 10 carries for 76 yards. He had two rushing touchdowns, one of which was for 45 yards.

The Titans score on three of its first eight plays.

Singleton emerged as the Titans’ starting quarterback against Alice in 2010. He proved to be unstoppable for the Coyotes and he helped Memorial to a 48-19 win. Singleton then proceeded to carry Memorial to the Class 5A regional semifinals. The Titans finished the season, 9-4.

Soza said as talented as the Titans are, they offer his Coyotes yet another opportunity to improve before the Sept. 23 opener in Corpus Christi against Moody.

“It’ll certainly be a good opportunity to play against a really, really good football team,” Soza said.

Memorial is the latest in a string of top-notch opponents in Alice’s non-district schedule, which has also included Laredo Alexander and Weslaco. All three teams were 5A playoff teams a year ago. Alice lost to Alexander, 62-20, in Zero Week. They fell to Weslaco Friday night, 28-14.

“I think Port Arthur Memorial is the better of the three,” Soza said. “Alexander had some good skill-position kids. Weslaco had a lot of size. Port Arthur is just very athletic and talented. If we can just come out of the game healthy, and if we’re able to maintain some confidence and not lose focus, we should be okay going into the start of district.”

As daunting a task as the Titans may be, Alice can’t afford to focus too much on its opposition. It already has its hands full trying to turn things around, especially offense they have committed nine turnovers in two games. Against Weslaco, the Coyotes lost two fumbles and two interceptions.

One of the interceptions led to a 40-yard touchdown return by Ernesto Tafolla.

“Those turnovers really hurt us,” Soza said. “Not only are we killing drives, but we’re giving the other team easy points.”

Alice has given up interceptions for touchdowns in each of its two losses.

Alice totaled 237 yards against Weslaco. Its usually prolific running back accounted for a mere 121 yards. Lucas Almaraz led the Coyotes in rushing with only one carry, which went for a 47-yard touchdown.

Quarterback Andre Saenz completed seven of 18 for 94 yards and two interceptions. Oscar Resendez, who played mostly late in the fourth quarter, was one of two for 22 yards.

The game against Port Arthur is at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Nice, and it's good to hear this. I have not gotten a chance to see the Varsity this year, but will get to see them when they come out this way to play Aldine on next saturday.

P.S. I have also heard that there is quite a few special players in the 8th grade, that will be freshman next year. This makes for a good upside, just hope they can do something with it.

Kenny Ray relates to these players better than the previous two HC's and has one of the better coaching staffs in SETX.

    • Manchin may get it but any mention of the radical left that wanted to get rid of the filibuster and end almost 220 years of history because the Democrats are mad?  The House and Senate are obviously different legislative bodies with entirely different election processes and rules for a reason. The House can vote on laws with a simple majority vote. The Senate put rules in place that it would make it much tougher to pass laws. Laws should be difficult to pass. The Senate is often the holdup of the right and left. It takes 60 votes to break the filibuster so any law will almost certainly require agreement at least in part, from opposing sides of an issue. Because they can’t get laws passed, the radical left is like a baby having a tantrum and wants to change over 200 years of history and make it potentially ridiculously easy to pass laws. I have seen current poll maps and it is possible for the Republicans to sweep into complete power in November but by the tiniest margin. That would possibly mean that a single vote margin in both houses could enact what you might call the radical right laws. There would be nothing that the Democrats could do to stop any legislation whatsoever if the left (they are all radical, minus Manchin) got their filibuster rule changed.  That is where the current filibuster comes into play as any new law would require several Democrats to agree with the majority Republicans and vice versa.  Do you want the potential for your radical right to have free rein as the radical left wants by killing the filibuster or is the radical left just as (if not more) dangerous? Let’s see if we have a history in this area? Oh yeah, the Democrats changed the rules in the Senate to allow federal judges to not have to overcome the filibuster. Obama was not getting his federal judge nominations passed and being angry, they changed the rules instead of nominating more moderate justices. They were warned that it would come back to bite them. They didn’t care and chose the nuclear option to change the rules. Oops! Any guess how Trump got all of his Supreme Court nominees passed against strong Democrat opposition? The Democrats got rid of the filibuster for federal judges after another tantrum   So when you are so worried about the radical right, are you equally concerned in what the radical left is always doing by changing rules and history which were put into place just for situations like we are in? So while Manchin gets it, what about his other 50 colleagues (49 + Harris)?  What concerns you more, Abbott and Paxton or the Democrats who want to make it to where if the Republicans do take over, they can go wild… at least in your mind?
    • MODS please remove that ISD twitter link! I had no idea it would copy the whole posting. I only highlighted the portion about the venue change. Sorry about that!
    • See why I don't trust my Hogs?
    • Come on dude, don’t take anything away from the kids on the field. If you want to talk uncharacteristic, we made what 3 or 4 errors in game one. Y’all had 2 EARNED runs.  Defense is normally our strong suit. Your ace didn’t strike out a single one of our kids. Like I said also, you did not out hit us in game 1. Hell you barley out hit us in game 2. We had all the uncharacteristic walks. Josh pitched a hell of a game is what made that game what it was.
