Okay, we know that TXST had plenty of folks 'dog' the Southland a few years ago, but none were employed by the school - they were members of the Drive committee with a few of those people taking shots at the academic quality of the other SLC schools having already pre-established reputations for their actions in other happenings during previous years...[/i]

Did anyone else hear it as reported above by JJWooten on KatFans.com and TexasTerror on anygivensaturday.com?

Yes, I read it on katfans this morning and here is my reply.

I heard the "where are they now" sigment last night with Billy Tubbs and Bo Brown as I was leaving work. It is funny how two different people can hear the same thing and get a different message.

IMO, Billy Tubbs was not dogging the SLC. He did state in his opinion it was a bad decision to drop football and leave the Sun Belt conference. I did not hear him say one bad word about the SLC.

He stated in his opinion it would have been easier to go FBS if we never left the Sun Belt and that is true. (See South Alabama) He also mentioned the old rivalries with La Tech, North Texas, SW Louisiana (now ULL) and Arkansas State.

Then he stated he thought bringing back football and all the excitement around SE Texas will run over into fan attendance in other sports at Lamar.

Asking a honest question here; would you think it would be a mistake to go back to DII for financial reasons it that were to happen at SHSU? (I know it will not happen at SHSU I'm just using a hypothetical.)

I say yes it would be a huge mistake and it was a mistake for Lamar to leave the Sun Belt for those reasons. Just my opinion.

Coach Tubbs mentioned he and a few other administrators including Dr. Simmons are looking at all situations and monitoring conference realignment at Lamar.

We have to get better in our athletic department, fielding better teams including football. Plus, we have to raise money for a move to a FBS conference.

I believe I've read on here that you guys are monitoring the situation with conference realignment too.

No one knows what the SLC will be if you lose 2 Texas schools and a couple from Louisiana due to budget issues.

For TexasTerror, he did resign as AD and is Special Assistant/Consultant to the President. He helped bring back football and has made several great hires as in Coach Tidwell now AD/WBB HC, the strenght and conditioning coach Scott Reeves, Brian White men's golf, Dewi Hardman women's soccer, Ron Wesbrooks director of tennis operations, Justin Gibert volleyball, Trey Clark men's and women's cross country, media relations and other athletic administrative positions.

If Coach Roc has a breakthrough season like I heard Coach Tidwell state he believed was going to happen after watching them practice in the off season program you can add him to the list a good hires by Coach Tubbs.

Billy Tubbs has served Lamar University for a total of 25 years. He was involved in the winning of eight conference championships as a coach, and since he returned to the school as athletics director in 2002, Lamar teams have accounted for 20 Southland Conference championships in eight different sports.

For some reason there's this small group of fans on katfans.com that are obsessed with everything Texas State and Lamar.  I think they know that SHSU is like SFA and will be stuck in the SLC for a long time due to lack of a stronger fan base.  Even when their teams are successfully the have to knock Lamar.  It's really rather pathetic on their part.

I think when the archived video comes out, we can hear the exact phrasing, but sitting in my comfy chair up in the inland northwest, that's the way I heard it.

As far as being "obsessed with TXST-SM and Lamar, I don't think that's it. It was posted in the "Around the Southland Conference" forum, which is pretty appropriate. I could retort that some of you guys are obsessed with various FBS schools. I'm a college football fan in general, regardless of their location. I just happen to tune in more to Texas schools.

It was a radio broadcast so I doubt all of us will hear it again. However, you have to listen to what he said and the context in which he stated it. That is the message I got and what I earlier posted here and other sites.

Driving in my Ford, F-150 crew cab, that is the way I heard it.  :D :D

Leaving the Sun Belt was due more to the financial problems Lamar was experiencing in the 1990s than anything else.  If Simmons and Tubbs had been hired a few years earlier then I believe Lamar would still be in the Sun Belt.  A lot of people were upset when Lamar returned to the SLC and I don't think Simmons and company will be satisfied until they leave.

I will be glad when we leave the SLC. I also was upset when we left the Sunbelt as well. I don't understand why SHSU or their fans would care whether we left or not and if we do that it has to be in tandem with them. If they want to stay FCS or pump up the SLC or whatever I say great and more power to them. Dr. Simmons has a long term plan for where Lamar as whole is going and understands the mistakes of the past...and we will succeed in the FBS. The same arguments for FBS seem to be the the same about should we bring back football in the first place..and will any one come out to support it, it will cost too much to fix the stadium etc etc etc. I really trust Dr. Simmons to continue make quality first class moves.

I listened to this on the way home from Huntsville and I also took it to be trashing the SLC, but after taking time to put things in context I can see what he was saying and I dont think he was trashing anyone just keeping aspirations and expectations high for LU in the future...

I don't know how much the financial situation affected the move, I'm sure it was a factor but IMHO the move was made by Rex Cottle to try to protect Grey Giovanni's job as head basketball coach and get him in a conference where they thought he could be more successful.  Not dispariging Grey, he  was a really great guy and we all wanted him to be successful but it didn't work out as planned.  It was abad move and if anyone remembers, it was sold to the fans as if "we move to the SLC, we will bring football back".  Well that did happen, about 15 years later under a totally different administration.  Point being, the Cottle administration had no plans to bring it back, they just used the carrott to sell the plan.  LU could have brought football back as a member of the Sun Belt.

The way SHSU keeps beating the dog crap out of us in basketball (and now football) I doubt that he was trashing SHSU.  Now me, I'll trash SHSU and SFA BECAUSE they beat the dog crap out of us.  :-)
