A three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning killed the Lee Ganders’ chances at pulling out a comeback win Friday night at Herington Field.

West Brook defeated Lee 7-4.

Lee now holds an overall record of 11-10 and 6-3 in District 21-5A play.

The Ganders had nine hits. John Salinas, David Garcia and Emmanuel Torres each finished with two of those hits on the night.

“We had some guys hit the ball well for us tonight,” Lee coach David Hackney said. “Emmanuel Torres, John Salinas, and even David Guzman, they hit real well tonight.”

The Ganders didn’t get on the board until the bottom of the third inning.

Down 3-0 with two outs, Michael Gomez was walked before advancing to second base. Reed Seeley was walked after him. Gomez then stole third off an error before scoring the team’s first run on a base hit from Salinas.

That was the Ganders last run scored in the inning, and the next time they stepped up to the plate, the Bruins had already tacked on another run to go up 4-1.

Slowly but surely, the Ganders started sneaking up on the Bruins.

In the bottom of the fifth, Salinas scored off a single to center field to cut the lead to 4-2.

A strikeout by Lee pitcher David Garcia, and a couple grounders put the Ganders back on offense in the bottom of the sixth where they tied the game.

Daniel Guzman and Christian Valverde singled, before David Guzman was walked to load the bases.

Daniel Guzman tagged up on a sacrifice fly to put his team down by only one run.

Valverde then ran home to tie the game at four runs each.

West Brook’s Will Henderson had two home runs, including the one in the seventh to seal up the win.

Hackney said he was obviously disappointed by the final score but was proud of the effort he saw from his team.

“Overall, I was pleased,” he said. “I was real happy with the way the kids battled back to tie the game. The defensive intensity was there, the dugout was into it and the bats came alive. We’re still in good shape. I think this is a good learning experience to go in for the W.”

The Ganders’ next game is scheduled for Tuesday when they host Channelview at 6:30 p.m.
