CROSBY — With a win Friday night, the Barbers Hill Eagles would have secured a spot in the playoffs, but the Crosby Cougars had other ideas.

It took double-overtime to decide a winner as the Cougars came on top in the end, 61-53.

Kenyan Willis had 16 points on the night for the Cougars and M.J. Mathis finished with 10.

Austin Crawley led the way for Barbers Hill with 23 points and Carson Asbury finished with 15.

“This is a great environment,” Barbers Hill coach Nathan Toon said. “Both crowds really got involved and it was a great game overall. They (Crosby) deserve credit.”

The Eagles’ next game is scheduled for Tuesday when they host North Forest.

Up next for the Cougars is Galena Park on Tuesday, and Crosby coach Edwin Egans knows his team has its work cut out for it.

In the event that both Crosby and Barbers Hill win Tuesday, they will play each other again at a neutral site to see which team makes it into the playoffs.

“Listen, Galena Park is ranked at the top of the district for a reason,” Egans said. “They’re going to be tough to beat.”

As far as the win over Barbers Hill goes, the Crosby coach said it doesn’t get much bigger.

“ I have a lot of respect for Coach Toon and what he’s doing with his program,” he said. “I became a fan tonight as a coach. A double-overtime win is always big no matter who it’s against.

“I’m really proud of these kids. They’ve worked hard and showed a lot of competitiveness and character. We’re going to come back tomorrow and hopefully have a solid practice to be ready to go on Tuesday.”

With Barbers Hill down 36-34, Crawley nailed a 3-pointer and scored on the next possession to put his team up 39-36.

Mathis then returned the favor by nailing a jumper and hitting a free throw to tie it up with 36 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

With five seconds remaining, Crosby stole the ball for a fast break but was unable to capitalize in order to avoid overtime.

In the first extra period, Trey Baker of Barbers Hill was driving to the basket when the ball was stripped from him and went out of bounds. That left a quarter of a second on the clock and the Eagles were unable to get a shot off and the first overtime ended with both teams at 44-44.

The second overtime saw the Cougars wrap it up as they collected all but two of their 17 points from the the foul-line.

In the two overtime periods, the Cougars shot 32 free throws to Barbers Hill’s five.

Both teams play their games at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
