Guest coachacola Posted February 7, 2009 Report Posted February 7, 2009 Lot's of LU talk in Bob West's article: Props to Lamar University athletic director Billy Tubbs for implementing the idea of honoring former Cardinal basketball greats by hanging their jersey from the rafters of the Montagne Center. It’s probably something that should have been done years ago, but better late than never. The first three honorees — Don Bryson, Clarence Kea and B.B. Davis — were obvious to all of us on the committee and didn’t need debate. It will get much tougher after this. And for those puzzled over the absence of LU’s all-time leading scorer, Mike Olliver, he’s encountered legal problems that preclude his No. 10 from being displayed at this time . . . Props also to LU football coach Ray Woodard and his staff for what appears to be an excellent first step down the recruiting trail. It will be longer than usual before we know just how well Woodard did, but on paper he reeled in some impressive athletes. Also impressive was the school’s signing-day press conference, complete with highlight videos . . . For those who are wondering what’s up with Nederland’s talented running back Warrell Grogan, who committed to Lamar but wasn’t on the signee list, here’s the deal. Grogran was late taking his SAT and doesn’t yet have the results. If he qualifies, he’s expected to go ahead and sign with Lamar. If not, the next option would be to attend a junior college, then come back to Beaumont for the 2011 season. http://www.panews.com/sportsbobwest/local_story_038215414.html?keyword=topstory
