A tale of two halves

Vidor comes back to down L-town, 27-12

VIDOR — Two completely different teams.

One was Vidor on the positive side and the other was Lumberton on the negative side after halftime at Pirates Stadium Saturday night.

The Pirates were down 12-0 at the break before scoring 27-unanswered points in the second half to win a pivotal District 20-4A showdown, 27-12.

The first half Vidor (3-1, 1-1) gave up 220 yards of total offense, 192 on the ground. The second half Pirates limited the Raiders (3-1, 1-1) to just 50 total yards, 26 rushing.

“I felt like in the first half we just were not making tackles,†Vidor coach Jeff Mathews said. “This is an incredible group of kids. If they are told they can’t do something, they prove you wrong.â€

First half Lumberton held the Pirates to 96 yards. The second half Raiders allowed the Pirates to end up with 301 yards of total offense, 223 on the ground.

It all started as the Pirates took the first drive of the second half down the Raiders throat.

On the second play Vidor quarterback Chris Teinert found James Laramore for 26 yards bring the Pirates down to the Raiders’ 34-yard line.

Jacob Peevey then scooted for 29 yards before finding paydirt from 10 yards out. A Jacob Jeanise PAT made it 9-7 Lumberton with 10:10 left in the third.

Vidor forced a punt before going to the scoring well again.

This time it was Teinert scoring from nine yards out. Even with a failed kick, Vidor took a 13-12 lead with 5:28 left in the third.

The big play of the drive was a 34-yard pass Matt Conn hauled in from Teinert.

Trae Hester then came up huge on defense for the Pirates after scooping up a Lumberton fumble. Hester brought the ball down to the Raiders’ 6-yard line.

After Theron Reynolds, who had 54 yards rushing, ran for five yards, Reynolds scored from a yard out. Another failed kick made it 19-12 Vidor late in the third.

On the Raiders’ next possession another Pirate came up with another huge play.

This time it was Laramore’s turn to get into the action with an interception.

If fans thought it would be the last great play from the Pirates, they were wrong.

On a fourth-and-two, Mathews got tricky.

“We were going to call a fake no matter what,†Mathews said.

Call a fake is exactly what they did.

Devan Dart received the snap on a punt and ran to the right. His pitch to Conn seemed off yet it worked and conn scooted for about 12 yards.

“It got there and that is all that mattered,†Mathews said.â€

From there the Pirates were able to push into the endzone five plays later as Reynolds scored from a yard out. Reynolds then ran in a two-point conversion as Vidor went up 27-12.\The Pirates did not seem ready for the Raiders when the game started as Hanna got going in a hurry.

After a 7-yard run to start the game, Hanna busted loose for a 40-yard gain to bring Lumberton down to the Pirates’ 10-yard line.

The Pirates defense did stiffen to hold the Raiders to a field goal, a 37-yard boot from Trace Freeman as Lumberton led 3-0.

After a Vidor punt, the Raiders wasted no time in scoring yet again.

Three plays into the Raiders’ second drive it was Hanna again who sliced up the Pirates’ defense.

Hanna took an option pitch from quarterback Ryan Hughes and headed downfield.

Hanna broke tackles and used a spin move to allude the last Pirates’ defender at the 17-yard line to score from 58 yards out. A failed kick made it 9-0 with 5:27 left in the first period.

While Vidor struggled on offense, the Pirates’ defense was in bend-don’t-break mode for the rest of the first half.

The Pirates best chance to score in the first have started with 7:31 left in the second quarter as Vidor started on its own 27-yard line.

Pitman, who had 55 yards in the first half, had a 14-yard run on the drive and Jacob Peevey broke loose for a 15-yard gain.

On the eighth play of the drive from the 17, Pitman broke free and seemed headed to score.

Pitman coughed up the ball and Lumberton’s Kyler Keith scooped it up on the 1-yard line and returned it to the Raiders’ 32.

Lumberton made Vidor pay for the mistake as Freeman kicked his second field goal of the first half as the buzzer sounded for the break with Lumberton leading 9-0.

The Raiders had 192 yards rushing in the first half and held a 220-96 advantage in total yardage.
