Wherever you thought perennial Class 3A power West Orange-Stark was going to finish this year, you might want to move it up a couple notches.

WO-S receiver/running back James Haynes showed speed, hands and several gears to burst into the open and into the spotlight at Schuman's National Underclass Combine in DeSoto featuring an invitation-only list of athletes for the Class of 2010 from across the Southwest and Midwest.

West Orange-Stark junior WR James Haynes rose to the top of a regional Class of 2010 combine.

The 6-0 ½, 180-pounder ran a 4.51 on a soft field turf that gave up no better time among the 260 participants from Texas to Minnesota. Haynes, who also will play defensive back for WO-S, was all but un-coverable and showed great athleticism and hands in the afternoon football drills.

"Let me put it this way, if he were an '09 (recruit), I could call a couple of SEC coaches and have them look at his video tonight and he'd have scholarship offers tomorrow," said Barry Every, rivals.com's national recruiting analyst attending the combine. "(Haynes) was running an inside route full speed and the quarterback threw it over the wrong shoulder. He turned 180 degrees and made the catch looking like that was the direction he was running the whole way. He made plays like that all afternoon."

Haynes was among many '010 prospects who jumped onto national radars. Grand Prairie's B.J. Christmas ran a 4.55 and showed he's fully recovered from a hip injury that kept him out at South Grand Prairie last season. He's transferring to GP. Cedar Park's Dom Espinosa, Little Elm's Garrett Sullivan were among the top linemen. Sullivan, who advanced a grade is only 15 heading into his third year on the Little Elm varsity.

Cy Fair CB Duran Snoddy and LaGrange QB Josh Schneider all also consistently shined throughout the 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. day.

If he weren't a Class of 2011, Killeen Ellison LB/RB Devon Hocutt might have been named LB of the day among his elders. Hocutt will run as a halfback/fullback along with recent Texas Tech commit Daniel Cobb in a power-running, 3-back offense under new coach Buddy McBride, a former DC who might have trouble letting the powerfully built, 5-11, 210-pound Hocutt off the defensive side.

For Haynes, he could be a huge spark to a youthful offense at talent-laden WO-S, generally ranked in the Top 10 of pre-season polls. Haynes had all his explosiveness and acceleration despite driving all night with his dad, Jimmy Haynes, to get to the DeSoto combine.

"I didn't get off work until 11 p.m. and we traded driving until we got here at about 4:30 a.m.," Haynes said. "We pulled into a Waffle House parking and slept a couple hours and then came over here."

Haynes has come into his athleticism. His dad, who was a overachieving, undersized defensive end at Beaumont South Park, has been exposed to major camps in the past. He credited WO-S coach Dan Hooks and assistant Toby Foreman for helping prepare and know of upcoming events. Haynes also already has a strong performance at a Texas Tech camp.
