Now that wasn't nice Bigdog. Just asking. If Newmann leaves you know Big Ned won't win but a few District games. Just being honest.

Five finalists named for AD/coach vacancy

By Joshua Buckley

The Daily News

Published March 28, 2008

LA MARQUE — The names of five finalists have been released for the La Marque High School athletic director/head football coach vacancy.

La Marque Independent School District released the list of finalists for the position on Thursday, in response to a request filed by The Daily News under the Texas Public Information.

The five finalists for the position are Dallas Kimball head coach Darrell Jordan, Grapevine head coach Gary Mullins, Nederland head coach Larry Neumann, Aldine Nimitz head coach David Suggs and Flower Mound Marcus defensive coordinator Chuck Vincent.

LMISD Public Information Officer Denise Walker also confirmed that no public forum will be held involving the finalists this year.

Mullins has been the head coach at Grapevine for the last eight seasons. In his tenure, the Mustangs have gone 49-35 and advanced to the postseason five times.

Mullins also served as head coach of Rosenburg Terry from 1990-91, where he compiled a 7-12-1 record.

Neumann has been the head coach at Nederland since 1993. In his 15 years, he’s compiled a 120-55-1 record with the Bulldogs.

Nederland made the postseason for 12 consecutive seasons before finishing fourth in District 22-4A this year.

Suggs has spent the last four seasons as head coach at Nimitz, where he’s compiled a 24-17 record. His three stops before Nimitz included two years at Beaumont Central (18-6), one year at Port Arthur Lincoln (8-3) and three seasons at Fort Bend Willowridge (18-13).

For his career, Suggs has a 57-31 record and advanced to the playoffs six times. However, Nimitz has missed the playoffs the last two seasons.

Jordan and Vincent were not on the original list of 34 applicants provided to The Daily News on March 15.

Jordan took over as head coach at Kimball in 2001. In his seven seasons there, he has a 52-29 record and has advanced to the playoffs each year.

La Marque fans are familiar with Vincent from his stint as the Cougars’ defensive coordinator in 2006. La Marque won the state championship that season, in large part because of Vincent’s aggressive defense, which allowed an average of 10 points in the final 12 games of the season.

Vincent has been an assistant football coach for 21 years, including defensive coordinator at Marcus this past season. However, he is the only finalist with no head coaching experience.

La Marque is searching for a new athletic director and head football coach after Chris Jones resigned from those positions Feb. 15 after just one season with the team. The Cougars went 9-3 under Jones, and failed to advance to the regional finals for the first time in six years.

The next La Marque school board meeting is set for April 10. Any hire for the position will likely be made at that meeting.

I agree! He's a Defensive Mind!

they seemed like they were every where when they played TC. They made a FAST tc team look slow after about 1/2 a quarter. Although, I'll bet Spell could do some pretty good things with all that speed over there too!!!

Alot of people seem to think that Newmann will get this job, that's not a 100% done deal, BUT i do think he or Suggs are the Favorites.

Any new word Coog?

I do not want to be accused of plagiarizing my high school classmate ( that's right I'm 1971 and he's 1972) but here is some info he posted up on the CSN website

Just a few minutes ago, I received a call from a good friend of mine who is an extremely successful Head Coach at a 5A school in Region-II. While he couldn’t give me much information about Gary Mullins, he was able to provide me with some background on Darrell Jordan. (About the only thing he could say about Gary is that he has been put at a competitive disadvantage by the redrawing of district lines.) However, he had a lot to say about Coach Jordan.

Darrell is from East Texas and was a coordinator for the Lufkin Panthers under John Outlaw. He is a good coach and motivator and a strict disciplinarian. He does not tread lightly… he carries a stick and he isn’t afraid to use it… there is no doubt about who is in charge. He believes that defense is the key and utilizes *man-to-man* schemes and loves to *bring the house*. (Sound familiar?) Offensively, Darrell has run everything from the *I* to the *Spread*… he is a coach that matches his offensive schemes to fit his personnel. He is also tough when it comes to academics and if he doesn’t get the Jacksonville job he may very well end up being the *surprise* pick because according to my friend (who was called by Bob Ledbetter of Champions to get his input on Darrell) he is everything that Ecomet (and LMISD) is looking for.

Five strong candidates to choose from

By Joshua Buckley

Now this is a list for La Marque fans to get excited about.

After being disappointed with the finalists for the La Marque High athletic director/head football coach vacancy last year, many of the most respected voices of Coog Nation expressed their excitement to me over this year’s five candidates.

I must say, I agreed with Coog Nation as soon as I saw the list. This year’s five finalists — Grapevine head coach Gary Mullins, Kimball head coach Darrell Jordan, Nederland head coach Larry Neumann, Nimitz head coach David Suggs and Flower Mound Marcus defensive coordinator Chuck Vincent — are easily stronger than last year’s group of five.

That’s not meant to be an insult to Lydell Wilson, Chris Jones and Larry Walker, who were finalists last year. After all, Wilson went on to win a state title with Lamar Consolidated, and I still think Jones, while falling short of La Marque’s lofty expectations, can be successful in the right situation.

But unlike last year, I don’t think La Marque can go wrong by hiring any of the five finalists. And for that reason, I think Thursday was a exciting day to be a La Marque Cougar fan.

Here’s my breakdown of the candidates:

5. Darrell Jordan – Jordan was a surprise candidate, because he wasn’t on the original released list of applicants for the position. But his 52-29 record in seven seasons at Dallas Kimball shows that he is a good coach.

Because I don’t know too much about him, I have him ranked at the bottom of the five finalists.

4. Gary Mullins – Like Jordan, Mullins is another coaching veteran who has a proven track record. He’s gone 49-35 in eight seasons at Grapevine with five playoff appearances.

I wonder though if Mullins’ resume can compete against the top two on this list, which is why I rank him fourth right now.

3. Chuck Vincent – It’s funny that Vincent probably would have been the No. 1 or 2 choice last year had he gone through the application process instead of following Bryan Erwin to Flower Mound. This time around, he’ll have a hard time beating either of the top two candidates for the position, because he doesn’t have any prior head coaching experience.

That doesn’t mean Vincent wouldn’t be a great fit for La Marque. I was very impressed with him in 2006 and think his personality would be a perfect fit for the Cougar players. I know there are a lot of La Marque fans that would be pleased to see him on the sidelines of Etheredge Stadium next year.

2. David Suggs – There are several members of Coog Nation that are trying to tell others that Suggs should be the favorite for the position. Listening to their arguments, they may be correct.

Suggs was a former Cougar assistant under Alan Weddell, so he knows what the La Marque tradition is all about. He’s also a very strict coach, which could be a bonus on the field and in the classroom.

I have him ranked No. 2 right now on my candidate list, but I won’t be shocked to see him end up with the job. And if that happens, I think Coog Nation would be ecstatic.

1. Larry Neumann – Ever since I saw his name on the applicants list, I’ve thought Neumann was the favorite for the job.

He’s already made a name for himself throughout the state as a disciplinarian and a coach that stresses fundamentals. Both are qualities La Marque needs in order to reach state championship potential again. Plus, if he can have the kind of continued success at Nederland, what kind of dominant teams could he create with the athletes from La Marque?

The one negative Neumann may have is price. He’ll definitely cost the most of the five candidates. But if money is not an option, I think he has the best chance to get the job.

So what do you think La Marque fans? Who would you like to see wearing blue and gold next season?
