VIDOR PIRATES

2019 Record: 5-4 Overall, 4-3 District

5th Place in District 12-5A-II

Few communities have been hit harder from the effects of Tropical Storms Harvey and Imelda than Vidor.  Many in this hard hit area decided to relocate to other areas which has resulted in Vidor High School enrollment take a dramatic drop.  Despite that, the Vidor Pirates still just narrowly missed the playoffs in Class 5A, Division II.  With plenty of experience returning (seven starters return on each side of the ball in 2020), Jeff Mathew's Pirates have a team that could be a special one in their new home, the Class 4A, Division I ranks.

COACHING

Head Coach: Jeff Mathews

Assistant Coaches: Mike Trahan (Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line), Darrin Fletcher (Defensive Coordinator/Secondary, Jeremy Gray (Running Backs), Drew Charlton (Quarterbacks), Alvin Credeur (Offensive Line), Tony Bradley (Ends), Sean O'Bannion (Linebackers), T.J. Light (Defensive Tackles), Rodney Burks (Defensive Ends), Blake Peveto (Outside Linebackers)

OFFENSE

Seven starters return to the Vidor Slot T offense in 2020.  Senior quarterback Quentin Root returns to run the Pirate offense.  Running back Trenton Conn and junior fullback Layne Wilhelm will drive a Vidor backfield which will also feature senior halfback Brady Price, running backs Devin Peterson and Jason Watson and fullback Chris Dilly.  Senior offensive tackle Tyler Webb (1st team all-district) and center Caiden Veazey return to lead an offensive line which will also feature guards Bryce Munoz and Aaron Avery and Trace Greathouse.  Tight end Logan Bell and split ends Easton Walker and Jaedon Woodard will be the targets in the Pirate passing game.

DEFENSE

Seven starters return to the Vidor 3-4 defense in 2020.  Nose guard Jordan Smith and  defensive end Colby Smith return to man a defensive line which will also include defensive end Tristan McGowan.  Outside linebacker Ty Vincent (1st team all-district) will head a linebacker corp which will also feature linebacker Connor McKay and outside linebackers Lane Copeland and Ayden Mathews.  Safety Dayton Whitmire (2nd team all-district) and cornerback Dylan Dial will patrol the Vidor secondary along with safety Seth Nunez and cornerback Logan Coon.

Excited to see how Vidor does in this district.

If they play with the same intensity as they did in 5A, I think they’ll be able to sweep the District.   If they play like it’s going to be a cakewalk, they’ll tote a few tail whippings.  Schools with winning tradition appear to always have intensity.  Alas, the Pirates don’t have that.   Coach Matthews will have to find a way to keep them fired up.  If he does, they could make the Second deepest run in school history (depending on who they run into & when).
