The Day the Internet Died

Cloudflare, a web service that provides content delivery services and denial-of-service attack protection to websites, is one of the many companies that kicked the Neo-Nazi Daily Stormer website off of its platform following Charlottesville. The CEO of Cloudflare sent a memo to employees where he was incredibly transparent about how this decision was made, he discusses the moral dilemma in the decision, and he discusses the need for a Kesha's and industry framework in making such decisions going forward. I found it inspiring to see a CEO with so much power who respects everyones constitutional freedoms enough to care about even the objectively horrific content on the web.

Earlier today Cloudflare terminated the account of the Daily Stormer. We've stopped proxying their traffic and stopped answering DNS requests for their sites. We've taken measures to ensure that they cannot sign up for Cloudflare's services again.

This was my decision. Our terms of service reserve the right for us to terminate users of our network at our sole discretion. My rationale for making this decision was simple: the people behind the Daily Stormer are *******s and I'd had enough.

Having made that decision we now need to talk about why it is so dangerous. I'll be posting something on our blog later today. Literally, I woke up in a bad mood and decided someone shouldn't be allowed on the Internet. No one should have that power.

[Cloudflare employee's name redacted] asked after I told him what we were going to do: "Is this the day the Internet dies?" He was half joking, but I actually think it's an important question. It's important that what we did today not set a precedent. The right answer is for us to be consistently content neutral. But we need to have a conversation about who and how the content online is controlled. We couldn't have that conversation while the Daily Stormer site was using us. Now, hopefully, we can.

I'll be publishing a blog post with all our thoughts on this issue in a few hours. Until then, I'd ask that you not talk about this externally-

Matthew Prince

He goes into further detail in a blog post where he gets at the heart of the issue:

For a guy who struggles to get his iPad on, most of this flew so far over my head lis pathetic. But here was my take on it, and please correct me if I'm wrong - We now have folks deciding what can and can't be on the Internet.  And since many of these dotcom loons are liberal, liberal sites are pretty safe.  Very reminiscent of how Lois Lerner ran the IRS.

There are handful of companies that control the internet. Cloudflare is said to host around 10% of all traffic.  A few people basically have absolute power when they can control what is online.

Rape, murder, and kiddie porn videos- OK

Stonewall Jackson- Nope

That was my thought.  And you can find every type of perversion and filth on the Internet.  I'd be willing to bet you that 90% of Americans couldn't name three CSA Generals.  And as Col. West pointed out, if a statue, or name, makes you feel oppressed, you've got bigger problems.

Surely there are a few conservatives that are smart enough to start a web hosting business and compete with these "dotcom loons"      I know you believe in free market.   Don't use their stuff.  That will teach them.

Good point.  Not only good, but has validity.  I remember reading that whoever hacked the DNC had tried to hack the RNC also, but couldn't get in their system.  And Rupert Murdoch started Fox News and made gazillions.  It's business/capitalism 101 - find a need/void and fill it.  Unfortunately, I'm to computer challenged to do that lol.  I will compete with anyone on writing on cave walls with charcoal :)

Wait until Zuckerberg runs for president in a few years.  The amount of propaganda he can get in front of people will be staggering.
