  • I'm not knocking Kountze because they are always good. For this group to be in a seeding game and to be Co district champs Coach Joubert would have to be in the Coach of the Year conversation. At times this year he had to do it with smoke and mirrors. Duane Joubert is one of the best coaches is Se Texas .

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Some of y'all might want to discuss the job Coach Whitmire has done not only this season, but since he's taken over the basketball program in Buna.

He has done a great job. But everyone knows what Kountze usually has year in and year out. Idk how long he has been there but he has what? About 3 wins vs Kountze. He has done a hell of a job with the program. But since he has been there what's the deepest playoff run they have had ?

3 rounds last year. His first two years was 10-11 and 11-12 and they did average but as a first time head coach and a really young one at that you probably couldn't ask to much.  Then the next two years Buna was moved up to 3A, now 4A, and had no chance of competing with the top 3 schools WOS, HJ, and Silsbee. Once moved backed down they have played really well in district and split with Kountze all three years and winning the tie breaker this year. Coach Whitmire is doing amazing things in Buna.

Bryan is a great coach, my comment was in no way meant to slight him. My comment was in response to someone questioning Coach Joubert's job this year. The talent level on the two clubs this year was pretty equal and I believe they finished as co champs , faced each other 4 times and the results were 2-2. That's good stuff both ways.

Both coaches are great. Joubert's record the last 10+ years speaks for itself. You can't be a legit state tourney contender every single year for over a decade without great coaching. The last couple years he has had to deal with a severe depth issue and even a lack of physical size compared to the kountze teams from several years back. Nevertheless they went to state 2 years ago and nearly returned last year. Nobody should question this man.

Whitmire inherented a CRAPPY program when he was only 24 or 25 yrs old. We had some 4 & 5 win seasons right before he took over, so it was bad. It took a few years but he has turned it around and made Buna a well respected program again. 2 years ago he broke a 12 or 13 year playoff drought, then last year led the team 3 rounds deep after losing 4 starters and 2 key bench players from the year before. He is still very young and still learning and will only get better.

I expect to see some GREAT basketball between these two teams for years to come if these two coaches stay put. Gone are the days of Kountze running away with the district title year after year.

Don't forget EC in that district race, Kountze is on a downward slope talent wise. Buna and EC will battle it out the next couple of years IMO,

Oh absolutely. I only left EC out because they were not a part of the original discussion. I think these 3 teams are gonna beat the crap out of each other for many years to come. There will probably be some years where all 3 of them make the top 25 state rankings in the same season.

As far as Kountze going downhill, I will believe it when I see it. As far as talent, physical size, and bench depth, I will say that these recent Kountze teams look nothing like the teams I played against 6-8 years ago. Those teams had big kids, several talented playmakers, and a very deep bench. However, these smaller, less skilled Kountze teams of the past couple years have been experiencing the same level of success as those teams from several years back. And I credit that to their coaching and their playing style. I'm sure people from Kountze will disagree, but the fact is that they don't need a ton of talent or size to win with their playing style. They just need a handful of athletes that will run the floor, cause chaos and create turnovers, make the easy baskets, and hit a few 3's.

I have always said that the 2 keys to beating/competing with Kountze is protecting the basketball and defending the 3-ball. Any decent team that can do those 2 things can compete with Kountze. The problem is that 90% of teams can't handle that fast, in-your-face full court pressure and they turn the ball over like crazy. And that is why Kountze has maintained success through this dip in talent and size.

Kountze had 2 or three seasons years back were they didn't make it past the third round. As Kountze fans we call those down years. Kountze will be fine

That's true. I remember one year (Arnold's freshman season) we lost our first game in the playoffs, which was when they had the 1st round bye. However, the team we lost to was a Top-5 Tatum team.

That loss still hurts... I honestly think if we win that game we are at state that year.

Yep! I definitely agree. Grayland suffered some heartbreakers during his HS career. 2014 - lost on buzzer beater against Tatum. 2016 - lost on last second shot against East Chambers.

I know everyone is talking about Coach Whitmire from Buna and Coach J from Kountze being 2 of the best coaches in the area, and I agree 100%, but watching Kountze play and Buna Play,  their 2 Asst. Coaches work just as hard,  while both Head Coaches are talking to some of the players the 2 assts. are "working" the Officials are talking with other players, after watching some other High Schools play most Assts. sit on the bench and never say anything, and leave everything to the Head Coach,  Buna and Kountze Assts. are putting in the time with kids to do what they are supposed to do....Help the Head Coach..Both Coaches are extremely Lucky to have 2 Assts. who are willing to go the extra mile and do whatever it takes to support and help their Head Coaches and players to get to the next level..and I really feel good Assts. are hard to find, So Next time your at a game watch the Assts. and see how they contribute..Again good luck to both Buna and Kountze in the playoffs,  Both Teams have been amazing to watch this year...

Well said. Best of luck to Buna. Hopefully there will be a 5th meeting at the regional tournament!

    • We'll see. I don't trust us.
    • Starting pitching has been shaky the last few weeks due to some injuries outside of Hagen Smith.  He goes tomorrow, so y’all should be fine
    • Manchin may get it but any mention of the radical left that wanted to get rid of the filibuster and end almost 220 years of history because the Democrats are mad?  The House and Senate are obviously different legislative bodies with entirely different election processes and rules for a reason. The House can vote on laws with a simple majority vote. The Senate put rules in place that it would make it much tougher to pass laws. Laws should be difficult to pass. The Senate is often the holdup of the right and left. It takes 60 votes to break the filibuster so any law will almost certainly require agreement at least in part, from opposing sides of an issue. Because they can’t get laws passed, the radical left is like a baby having a tantrum and wants to change over 200 years of history and make it potentially ridiculously easy to pass laws. I have seen current poll maps and it is possible for the Republicans to sweep into complete power in November but by the tiniest margin. That would possibly mean that a single vote margin in both houses could enact what you might call the radical right laws. There would be nothing that the Democrats could do to stop any legislation whatsoever if the left (they are all radical, minus Manchin) got their filibuster rule changed.  That is where the current filibuster comes into play as any new law would require several Democrats to agree with the majority Republicans and vice versa.  Do you want the potential for your radical right to have free rein as the radical left wants by killing the filibuster or is the radical left just as (if not more) dangerous? Let’s see if we have a history in this area? Oh yeah, the Democrats changed the rules in the Senate to allow federal judges to not have to overcome the filibuster. Obama was not getting his federal judge nominations passed and being angry, they changed the rules instead of nominating more moderate justices. They were warned that it would come back to bite them. They didn’t care and chose the nuclear option to change the rules. Oops! Any guess how Trump got all of his Supreme Court nominees passed against strong Democrat opposition? The Democrats got rid of the filibuster for federal judges after another tantrum   So when you are so worried about the radical right, are you equally concerned in what the radical left is always doing by changing rules and history which were put into place just for situations like we are in? So while Manchin gets it, what about his other 50 colleagues (49 + Harris)?  What concerns you more, Abbott and Paxton or the Democrats who want to make it to where if the Republicans do take over, they can go wild… at least in your mind?
    • MODS please remove that ISD twitter link! I had no idea it would copy the whole posting. I only highlighted the portion about the venue change. Sorry about that!
