1. Got to love posts ABOUT Evadale! In football we get hammered because we don't play anybody in a district that we don't get to pick. We play 2 2A teams and 2 1A Division 1 teams and a larger private school. But we have to explain why we have the schedule we do? In basketball we are getting hammered because we are playing too tough schools. Evadale has already played 4A Vidor so whats the big deal about a couple of 3A teams. The reason you play tough teams is to get better. Evadale played tough teams last year and made it to the State Semi Final game and in all likelyhood should have won the state championship. Coaches make schedules, they look to fill holes so they can play the maximum number of games allowed. They don't get to pick district teams, but they get to choose who they play out of district. It is just that simple and Silsbee and HJ can play reserves or not, Evadale will play their starters and their reserves, because that is what you do to get better. The Rebels have 3 games before district starts and they want to play the best competition they can. Doing that gives them the best opportunity to be successful in district and beyond. Someone said Evadale could have said no, well so could Silsbee and HJ. So I guess all three coaching staffs must believe that something good can come out of these games!
2. Well no one can say that the Cards have not played a tough non-conference schedule! Playing #2 Ohio State and #3 Kentucky back to back is no small order for any team, but even in defeat the Cards can hold their heads up. I know Coach Knight is not a morale victory kind of coach, but playing teams like this will help him recruit players that will make the program better every year. I can hear the living room conversation now..."Well if you come play for Lamar you will face some of the toughest teams in the nation and with your help we not only will play them we believe we can beat them. We want to build a program that is not a March Madness cinderella story, but a season long really good team, so what do you say do you want to be a Cardinal?" I just hope that the university supports the program and fills the arena as often as possible. That is what makes the program more than just something to do, but is an event in and of itself.
3. My wife is from Stamford and we went to the Stamford-Albany game Friday after Thanksgiving. It is a great game and Albany was a power running team, but Stamford came out on top 28-21. So for Mason to be putting up this kind of points and yardage they are for real. Got to watch the 1st half, and the Mason tailback may be smal, but what a workhorse to his team. Over 40 carries and over 250 yards...WOW!
4. Evadale will return quite a bit Offensive Starters (7)                  Defensive Starters (6) QB Wes Williams                        LB Conner RB Jacob Conner                          DT Brandon Harvey WR Matthew Totten                    S Braiden Burford RB Skylar Smith                          CB Totten T MAtthew Acerage                      CB Smith G Tristen Reeves                        LB Reeves T Hunter Jackson The district will be differenent with Evadale, Sabine Pass and Burkeville the only surviving members of the district from the last alignment. Lovelady will likely drop to 1A D2 and will be a candidate to be new in the district, but anyone else would really be putting a huge travel hurdle with SP as the southern most tema in district. It likely could be that this district remains a four team district with all but one of the teams going to the playoffs. Coach Williams has things to build on and a good group coming off of the JV for next season.
5. While we hate to loose another districk foes I feel this is the right move for HI. Evadale will go down as HI last 11 man game, but even in HI's loss I can say that I never saw any quit in them! If you were not at that game you could not know that it looked like the Cards would call the game at the end of the 3rd quarter as they were down to 9 players left. They had already been playing with 10 during parts of the 3rd quarter. As the coaches went out to attend to the fallen Cardinal player, it looked like Coach Jones and Coach Williams were going to agree to end the game. I have a picture of the Cards laying on the field and they were gased. Iron Man football less a couple even. But the Cardinal player did not want to stop. So the decision was made to go 9 on 9 for the final quarter with a running clock. Those are the kind of young men that I am sure Coach Jones wants to come back and coach! Who wouldn't! I wish HI much success and hope that more people will take the opportunity to watch this exciting brand of football. It takes some getting used to at first. It is seems more like Arena Football than what most of us are used to, but it is exciting from start to finish, that is for sure. Just know that from the Rebel Nation we always enjoyed playing the Cardinals, (except for the mesquitos, still don't know how you folks do it down there with those things), and I for one will be very interested to see how things progress for you as you embark on this new adventure. Good luck and God's Speed.
6.
One word VOLLEYBALL. Volleyball is like soccer is to football. Kids want to play a sport that takes less running. ;D ;D Can't wait to hear from my ole friend on this one. LOL!!!!!!!
Not sure what you mean soccer is much more running than football and they must do it Dec-Mar while everybody else is indoors playing basketball?
7. Got to hand it to the Rebels they schedule quality teams for their tournament, 2A, 3A and a 4A team. It is one of the reasons that they were so good last year. They played tough competition and they rode that experience all the way to Austin.
8.
WHO'S GONNA BANG THE BOARDS THIS YEAR?
Kyle Taylor will be the inside guy this year for the Rebels,
9. I am going to be at the 1A D1 game between Albany-Stamford in Abilene. These two are from the same district and Albany won the first time they played.
10. The Rebels will do thier annual Clark Kent change as they run into the football locker room and out of the basketball loker room. They will play their first basketball game of the year less than 72 hours after their unsuccessful playoff football game. The team has not practiced more than an hour before their take the court and with as many as 8 of the 11 players on the varsity that were in pads on Friday the players from OCC might get bumped a bit more than normally. The Rebels had to do the same thing last season and they also played a schedule that is full of upper classification schools as they will this season, Vidor is tomorrow's opponnet. But all in all things worked out quite well for the Rebels last season and who knows maybe they can string things together for a second straight trip to Austin, but it all begins today. Take it a game at a time Rebels get prepared for district. You know every7 team you play will use last years State Tournament appearance as a motivation to try to knock you off. So bang the boards, run the floor and soar like you did last years. Get ready SETX...the Runnin' Rebels are back on the court and are ready to roll!
11.
The Evadale Catfish Festival will once again host the SETX All Star Basketball games but we are in a bit of a holding pattern and are asking for your help with decision on the timing of the games. This coming year the Catfish Festival will move to its new date which is March 1-4, 2012. Our problem is this. That is the weekend of the state tournament for girls and the regional tournaments for guys. Our question is this would you favor us still holding the All Star games on Saturday, March 3rd knowing that it might be we would have to exclude some players who might still be playing or should we wait a couple of weeks until all the teams are finished, which would put us at a disadvantage as it is not on our event weekend. Tell us what you think and we will then be in a position to begin contacting coaches. The new date would likely effect some players that might participate and I hope that SETX is well represented at the state girls tournament, and the guys regional, but we would like to know if you think that the games could be successful in spite of the date or should we wait? The All Star games are a part of our scholarship fund raising and a way for players to have one last chance to play against players that they have faced throughout their careers some dating back to games played in Little Dribblers. We look forward to another great year of SETX basketball and the opportunity to spot light some terrific athletes in our All Star games. Thanks for your input.
OK several people have stopped by, but no one is offering any advice. We really are asking, let us know what you think.

13. Area Round game Friday 7 PM @ Manor High School (near Austin) Bruni defeated Barksdale Nueces Canyon 47-15 in the bi-district dround. Winner will face winner of Falls City/Milano in regionals. Bruni finished 3rd in their district which includes Falls City and Pettus. They are a run oriented teams that has some size, but they are a young team starting freshmen and sophomores especially on the lines. Evadale will be seeking its second consecutive trip to the regional round and a potential rematch with Falls City. Last year the Rebels cruched D'Hannis in their area round match up before falling to eventual State Champion, Falls City. Good luck to the Rebels have a great week of preparations and take things one game at a time.

17.
The UIL needs 1A to have just two divisions, one 11 man and one 6 man, period.
I would tend to agree, but the UIL continues to water down everything. First only district champions to one champion per classification Then 1st & 2nd but still one champion per classification. Then 1st, 2nd & 3rd and two divisions in each classification Then 1st, 2nd 3rd in two separate divisions in each district of split divisions. They are by no means shrinking the poul, in fact it sounds a lot like hockey was before the year without hockey a few years ago. We may want to change this, but don't count on it.

19.
Burkeville, Sabine Pass, and High Island all need to go to six man. Maybe then they can compete against a school like Evadale that constantly fields 20+ students on a varsity squad against those schools who field at the most 15(being generous) players. Evadale is the only school in the district that even fields a JV squad..cmon.. how fair is that.
Under that reasoning then HD should go six man as they had no JV this year. And they are a D1 1A school. Sabine Pass had well over 20 players suited up against Evadale and Burkeville about the same, both schools in my opinion can field teams, now I do not know why Burkeville consistently plays 8 games each year I would think they would want to play 10 to get more experience, but they have the players. Evadale had fewer plays come out this year than in the last 5 years and they only played 6 games this year while they usually get in 8. I again say look at the records of the teams in the playoff bracket and you will see plenty of teams with sub 500 records in the mix.
20. Joharr on another thread put up all the 1A teams in the playoffs and while Burkeville and Sabine Pass have the worst two records in the bracket, they are by no means the only teams with more loses than wins in the bracket. The UIL in my opinion made a mistake when they allowed 3rd place teams into the playoffs when they made the two division format. When you think about it they did not just add one more team to the mix which would have been the case if they took 1st and 2nd from each district, they added 3 team, with the split divisions and the 3rd place from each division. Dist 14 will always have SP and HI (if they stay in 11 man) because they have no place else to go. It is likely that Lovelady and/or Mount Enterprise could end up in the district and that would make it less likely that the district would have something like this happen again, but the UIL could just as easily decide to keep 14 a four team district (HI playing 11 man) to keep the travel down. HI or SP to Burkeville is already a 2 1/2 hour trip by bus. HI or SP to Loveday would be more in line with 3 1/2 hours. I know that some of the West Texas districts have travel like that, but I know the UIL does not like it if they can avoid it. If High Island drops then who knows what happens as there will only be 3 teams remaining in 14 and the UIL will have to add at least one more team, but get ready to make so very long drives if they do. SP and Burkeville are in and that the way the system is now. They are playing one more week and they have the same chance any other team has to advance in the playoffs. They may not, but it is their right to get the opportunity to try. They did not write the rules they are simply playing (on) by them!
21. I will give this to the kids from High Island, there is no quit in those young men! They came to play and went from can to can't. They were sportsmanlike during the entire game helping rebel players to their feet after they knocked them down. It was impressive to see them fight so hard and convience their coach to play on into the 4th quarter with just nine on the field. Congrats to the Rebels for their forth straight district championship and 24th consecutive district win. Also to coach Williams for being the sport to play on with 9. He could have said no, but he too realized that it was important for the Cardinals to finish what they had started that night. Not sure how the playoffs will shake out for the three teams now tied for second but High Island deserves one of those spots in my opinion as they are a group of gamers! Thanks for the very interesting game that we will be talking about in Rebel Land for a long long time. Oh and just a side note one of the sideline refs on teh Rebels side told Coach Williams that the officials have a banquet next week and that this game would get plenty of conversation around that event.
22. Good luck Lady Rebels! You ladies have done a fantastic job this year and have won with class and style. Now it is time to make your move and show your stuff in the playoffs. We are all proud of you so go out and get a victory tonight!
23.
i wonder how they mke these picks since evadale won at home last year and H-D won at there house, and evadale lost 5 SR and i dont think H-D lost any but they still got evadale ahead of H-D but heck what do i know
Not sure about the preseason rankings myself, believe that it's what you do on the court and where you finish in the end that matters most, but I can say this about the 2011-2012 Rebels they have three returning starters from last years team including our leading scorer, Devon Murphy. Shawn Totten and Brandon Bruce are the other two, all three of them are seniors this year. Add senior Kyle Tayor a post player into that mix (Kyle got substancial minutes in the State Semi-Final game last year) and the other player who was on the bench for the Rebels last year is Briden Burford another scorer. So experience will not be a problem for the Rebels this season. Coach Williams (Coach L) to us here in Evedale, knows this will be a different team that will not be the pound it inside team as last year, but they will know how to win and with another year of tough predistrict games they will be ready to face anything that ge thrown their way. Not saying the Rebels are bound for Austin again, but that they we be ready to make another run at district this year and beyond that, who knows!
