Upset Speacial of the Week....LCM over PN-G?
Gasilla replied to TexAgNDN's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I have not seen LCM fans discrediting PNG's pre-season. I am the only one who has done that and I am not an LCM fan. I just know that Texas City is not the TC of old and BH is BH and Crosby lost everything last year and has been getting smoked. Again, I wish PNG luck, but I think some of their fans who don't give LCM a chance based on who they've played are either in denial or don't really understand that LCM has played the tougher pre-season. -

IMO some of the long time posters(maybe even from WOS) could do with reading this. Believe me, I DON'T disagree with you. Just giving them a little advice, I think that every team has a few fans who don't care about that. But at least they are given the opportunity to take it. -

J-Dog, where are all of these "Rabid Dogs" coming from? LOL Where were they last year when the dogs weren't doing so hot? I am glad Jasper is doing well SO FAR, but if you end up 2-8 this WILL NOT be considered a successful year, I don't care if one of those wins were over the state champion. Also, you newbies around here bumping your gums need to learn some public message board "rules of thumb": 1. Since most of you start showing up after a big win (in this case two of them), just make sure you do your best not to insult the team you just beat. Normally, your team will have to play them again next year. Fans, coaches that read these boards and players will remember what you say. They will not remember "who" said it, they will remember "Jasper" said it. 2. It's ok to be excited, but you must use a little self control with making lofty predictions. Many things can happen during the course of a season that can de-rail your success. People don't forget when you start boasting and I guarantee, there is always a sniper running around that will dig up your old posts and remind you of what you said. 3. Be a fan and support your team, but also remember when making lofty predictions that coaches and players DO read these boards and you NEVER want to say anything that may end up on someones bulletin board, or talked about, that will give your opponent cause to be motivated. Jasper has a tough enough schedule, other teams don't need anything else to motivate them. This also includes how good or bad you think a team is. Even if you do think they are terrible, don't say it. Most teams are not bad forever. -
Hey Coop I have an answer for you, and it is affecting WOS as much as Jasper. Enrollment!!! when you have over 900 in school you can field a better team than when you have fewer than 700 it is a simple numbers game. This problem started taking its toll on Jasper a few years ago and it seems to be catching up with WOS now. Kirbyville is in the 300's and Newton has less than Kirbyville so that excuse dont work at all! Ryker, when does it get to where people discussing problems they percieve within their programs NOT be considered excuses? Also, I really don't understand the point of your statement. I'm not trying to pick a fight, but Newton and Kirbyville compete in 2A. WOS and Jasper in 3A. Neither Kirbyville nor Newton have ever beat WOS and until this year, many of the games really haven't even been close. Not sure, but I think that Jasper has also won the majority of it's meeting between the two. I think enrollment does have a little bit to do with that. Not the decisive factor every year, but it does have a bearing. As for the excuses, I agree with you and thats not the point I was making. If youll go back and read some of my post in this thread youll see i was making the same point you are asking me about. I think you read too much into the statment I wrote. Yes they are 2a but can compete with most schools in 3A. Obviously the more kids you have to choose from the better off you are. Im was just making a statment that you dont have to have the numbers to put together a program that is capable of competing with schools with twice and somtimes three times the enrollment. Gotcha and I agree. I think the point thunder was making is that it gets hard to compete at the level WOS does every year with a declining enrollment. Sooner or later, you are going to have a down year. I agree with him as well, but I don't think that will be this year, because the talent is there. I agree with you on that. I think we will get it going.

WOS is off... Not sure about Jasper. We pick back up with Brookshire Royal the following week at their place. -

I have talked to a few folks who's opinion I trust and they tell me Gilmer is very, very good. Right now, they are the odds on favorite to win the State Title... I'm just hoping it's the DI title... ;D

OK... One of you are going to have to call a truce here. If not, we are going to have 40 pages of Coop and AAW posts... :-\ -

No sir, I have not. I am just going by the overall record of those teams... I guess that's kind of like discrediting a teams predistrict and calling them underdogs because they played 3A teams, huh? -

I'm sorry, I knew they went to OT with one of them, so it was the 1-2 team not the 2-2 team. My bad. The fact I AM sure of is the overall record of opponents. That should concern you. Also, I do feel that PNG has improved and I am very glad and I think they will have a good season, but for some of the PNG fans to assume a win here when they haven't performed any better than LCM the last year or two and have not played anyone tougher is a little on the arrogant side and very foolish. Well, now that I have caught up on this thread, these are my thoughts. I see a lot of "upset" and "sneak up on" being used as if PNG was good last year and LCM was not or PNG was the team to beat. Neither team were very good last year. That being said, I just don't understand how PNG folks could just assume they are better than LCM. I'm a WOS fan and am fairly neutral, but looking at both teams opponents this year, if I were a PNG fan, I would be wondering how good my team REALLY is. LCM has played tough teams, they know where they are. Although it is said many times over how much scrimmages don't matter, I would be, at least a LITTLE concerned about the fact that Cleveland put the smack down on BH like they did. A team that PNG went to OT with. I am also seeing a little LCM mentality that they "hope" they compete. Sure hope the kids don't have the same because PNG has done nothing this year that should make them feel they are an underdog. This is just the first district game, an important game, but no more so than any other. If they play like they did against Cleveland, they win this game. -

I was wondering what had happened to the level headed folks from over there. Good to see you are still around. This will not be an easy game for either team and I honestly think prior performance this year favors LCM. If LCM does win, this will be nowhere close to being an upset. -

My thoughts exactly. -
WOS is off as well (couldn't have come at a better time) and I will going to check out what's going on over there in OF and watch those Bobcats take on Newton. I think this is going to be a good game.

... and to add to that, I also remember how miserable Jasper made our offense look that game as they beat us 21-8 and we scored the "8" at the end of the game and was a meaningless TD. We also had other games that year where we looked very bad, one that comes to mind was a 14-0 loss to Aldine Mac. We also had some highly touted seniors that year who just did not seem to want to step up and claim this as their team and elevate the play of those around them. Things change, kids play better, and some kids emerge as leaders as the season progresses. I'm not saying that this will happen or that we are destin for a season like we had in 1986. But, make no mistake, the potential to do that is there, it's just up to all involved to get it there. They either will, or they won't...
-
How about that... Something we agree on... ;D Nice Grad, I agree with you completely. We need leaders on the offensive side of the ball and they guys who are supposed to be doing it, aren't. That is the first thing that needs fixing, then, like someone else mentioned, the rest will take care of itself.

I have been saying for the last 2 weeks that I feel we are overrated right now. And as I've said, luckily, right now doesn't matter. As someone said earlier, very few teams that win the title do it with undefeated records. We are definitely not going to fold it up after a close win and a loss to good, proven programs like Jasper and kirbyville. We will only get better from playing them. The last few years we have played great early in the season and everyone here thought we were awesome. Then, we fizzle out late against teams no better than the ones we beat early on. Maybe this is something that needs to happen, but then again, maybe we will lose to OF and HJ and miss the playoffs. There are no guarantees in this game, but one thing is for sure. The season is still young, we have 2 weeks to work on things and we have one of the best coaching staffs in the state working their butts off to get all of this talent heading in the right direction. I like our chances.
