  1. I take responsibility for making the comparison of Todd Sutherland to Duke's Coach K. Clearly, they're at different levels, but my point was that Todd finds a way most every year, just like Coach K does, to create greatness from a group of very average players. Now, not every player that has come thru HJ has been average, as some have been better than average, but the majority of the players are, yes, average. Yet they compete deep into the state playoffs nearly every year. The title of the thread was "what makes a bad and a good coach?" I am merely pointing out that whatever and however Todd does every year makes him a good coach. I'd be willing to guess that many BISD players would love the opportunity to play for Coach Sutherland.
  2. Todd Sutherland makes a good coach. He is high school's verison of Duke's Coach K. Take what Sutherland does, insert multiple layers of passion, mix in a 55-gallon drum of discipline, and poof...average players turn into winners. He does it year in and year out.
  3. I agree with staying on topic, but coming from you, KP, that doesn't mean a whole lot. You & mama bear are the worst offenders. Too many of us have to read garbage comments and foolish bets between you guys in order to get to the meat of post. Remember the post about The Sutherlands? That was a prime example of you guys taking the thread off topic, instead of a perfect opportunity to praise Todd and his family for the wonderful example they set in the community.
  4. What was the WOS kicker's name for the 1987 State Championship team? If it's who I'm thinking, I believe he beat Jasper in the closing seconds that year.
  5. bullets, mother bear, and kenny powers sure have a way of ruining good threads by playing their "oh how I wish I was in high school again" game. Give it a rest guys.
  6. This thread is about the Sutherland family, not you, mother bear.
  7. Todd Sutherland deserves all of the accolades he gets, and more. As good as a coach as he is, he is ten times the man and role model. Good luck to HJ this weekend.
  8. OUCH !!!! Classic example of why it's best to say nothing.
  9. Turner - MVP Robinson - Offensive MVP ?? - Defensive MVP Benard - 1st team Burrell - 1st team Ricossa - 2nd team or Newcomer of the Year
  10. I'd pick Robinson over Benard for MVP any day, BUT...I'd also pick Jacoby Turner over Robinson!! In my humble opinion, Turner should be 21-3A's MVP.
  11. I agree with Turner being MVP. His "beastiness" is quite impressive. What happened to the pure shooting of the past?? I feel most shooters today do not practice true form but rely on their lopsided knuckle curve of a shot to go in. Repetition folks. Coaches need to teach mechanics and not rely on luck or alley-oop dunks.
  12. Jarvis '08 is better than Jarvis '09. I vote him co-MVP with Robinson. Jacoby Turner is not far behind.
  13. I will gladly eat crow. With all of Silsbee's athletes, I really thought HJ would get run out of the gym. Congrats Hawks!
  14. Want to read comments about the title of this thread but it seems the moderators' bantering overrides the topic...again. Pick up the phone if you want to chit chat. Back on topic...Silsbee wins by 20+; just too many athletes.
  15. Plain and simple, Silsbee is much better and this is their year. HJ is not even close to HJ teams of the past. Hawks will be the #2 seed in the district going into the playoffs and should, therefore, begin scouting their first round playoff opponent.
  16. Control of the district is clearly in Silsbee's hands. They have way more athletes than HJ. It would take a catastrophe of biblical proportions for Silsbee to lose a district game. HJ will lose big to Silsbee at Silsbee and make the playoffs as the #2 seed from the district but will not get past Silsbee in the regional tournament. This by no means says HJ is horrible, as they are clearly better than the remaining teams in the district. It means they should continue to fight but don't expect much in the head to head matchup with Silsbee.
  17. Do you want your voice and the people you trust to blatantly violate the law? I would hope your profession would lead you to support the right side of this issue. I know you bleed purple (and a lil red & orange now and then), but come on.
  18. OLGabe, I know you're smarter than the whining you type here. What don't you understand about the law? It's clear. Whatever their reason for not publishing the list is completely irrelevant, so why even bring it up? The law is clear. Use your opinion and position to legislate for a law change but don't lower yourself to the level of those who perceive themselves to be above the law.
  19. Well, if you agree that it wouldn't be worth adding the cost in this situation, you must agree it doesn't make much sense for a district in financial turmoil to keep it, either. There are some good things that are going to get lost in the shuffle and maybe later, when the district has an extra $2,000,000 in their pocket, they can bring it back, but overall, getting rid of the program is needed right now. Coop, they're going in the right direction here, like it or not. They can't keep spending money on things that can be cut back a bit. People have argued it's only $16,000 per year they're saving, but that's a good chunk of change, and they are going to have to chip away at the massive defecit. I don't think there's a $2,000,000 worthless program that they can cut to get back on track, but there are a lot of little things they can do to save money, and this is one of them. Could agree with you more, GoStangs.
  20. What happened to the rumor that Hooks always gets what he wants?! ;D
  21. Get over yourself, Ol Gabe. They should publish the list because it's the law. Case closed. The board's reasoning is merely their way of buying time. Change the law and your whining argument turns into something with merit.
