The Indians took a 36-33 lead going into the second half but Central dumped 19 points on the Tribe in the fourth frame to take a 62-53 win. With Tuesday night’s win, the Jaguars stay perfect with a 4-0 District 22-4A mark and head into Friday’s game with Ozen tied for first place. PN-G is quickly falling out of contention as it falls to 10-9 overall and 1-3 in league play. The Indians will travel to Dayton on Friday. Central’s Jamar Gulley led all scorers with 16 points while Brennen Jackson added 14 to the Jags total. -
Lamar rallies to victory from 14 down By Bob West The Port Arthur News BEAUMONT — No thanks to Ryan Toolson, Lamar University will head into its Southland Conference opener Saturday night riding a wave of momentum and confidence. The Cardinals, shot into a deep hole when Toolson scored 29 points in the game’s first 25 minutes, roared back from 14 down to turn back Utah Valley State, 74-69 Tuesday night at the Montagne Center. It took a 14-0 spurt that finished off a 23-4 run in a span of 7:57 to get Steve Roccaforte’s scrambling team over the hump. Lamar turned defeat into victory with full court defense pressure that forced five turnovers in a span of 11 possessions and led to eight points in the run. The Cardinals took the lead for good, 66-64, on a Lamar Sanders putback at 4:02, then got seven points from Kenny Dawkins down the stretch to sack the victory away. The Cardinals’ third win in four games improved them to 6-7 going into Saturday night’s SLC opener against Texas-San Antonio at the Montange Center. Utah Valley, which played much better than its record, dropped to 6-11. “Our players manned up, showed a lot of heart and a lot of grit,†said Roccaforte. “It was a hard game. To gut out a win like this should give us a lot of confidence we can make the plays to pull a game out in the last four or five minutes. “Toolson is as good a shooter as you’re going to see in the nation. He does that to everybody they play. He was impressive.†Nobody in a crowd announced at 2,765 would argue. The 6-4 junior from Gilbert, Ariz., hit 10 of his first 12 shots, including 7-of-8 treys. Then, in part because of havoc wreaked by the press, and in part by stifling defense from Matt Barrow, he didn’t get off a shot for over 10 minutes, and wound up making only one more field goal to finish with 32 points. Toolson’s 8 three pointers tied the Montagne Center record for a visiting player. “He’s a great shooter. We knew coming in No. 10 was averaging 22 points a game,†Barrow said. “It was stressed to us don’t let him catch the ball, get a hand in his face. But at the end of the day it’s about who comes out with the victory. “He may go for 40, but it doesn’t make any difference if it’s in a loss. Lamar Sanders led the way offensively and defensively for the Cardinals. Sanders’ stat line included 18 points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocked shots. “This was a real key win for us,†said an elated Sanders. “This sets a tone for the start of conference.†Four other Cardinals scored in double figures. Barrow had 14 points, Dawkins chipped in with 13 and five assists, Justin Nabors had 11 points, six rebounds and four steals and Darren Hopkins had 10 points. Eight of Hopkins’ 10, including a pair of treys, came during the 23-4 run. Lamar came up with 13 steals in forcing 18 turnovers that were turned into 19 points. The Cardinals beat the Wolverines 31-26 on the boards, outscored them 34-20 in the paint and owned a 16-8 advantage in second-chance points. Fifteen of the Cardinals’ 31 rebounds were on the offensive glass. It took everything Lamar could muster because of how well Utah Valley shot the ball. The Wolverines, although they made only two of their last 10 attempts, still finished at 56 percent (28-of-50) for the game.

Bears get needed win against Lumberton Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — Overcoming a slow start, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears powered their way past the Lumberton Raiders Tuesday to stay in the thick of the District 22=4A playoff race. LC-M got a game-high 16 points from Justin Kinsley in its 62-40 win which rebounded the Bears (16-6, 2-2) from a loss Friday to Nederland. Nederland was a 76-68 winner in overtime against Dayton Tuesday to keep a one-game lead for third place over LC-M. Ozen and Central remained tied for first in 22-4A as both teams won Tuesday. Ozen downed Vidor, 68-35, while Central defeated Port Neches-Groves, 62-53. Bears Coach Darin Harley knew the significance of Tuesday’s win and was pleased the way his team finished off the Raiders (3-19, 0-4) who were led by Cody Hussey’s 15 points. “We needed this one after letting Nederland off the hook last Friday,†Harley said. “We started slow but we kept doing the things that we do. We knew Lumberton was a physical group and we always have a hard time with those guys. That was a good practice for what we will see this Friday in Vidor.†Kevin Cooper added 11 points and seven rebounds in the win while both C.J. Champine and Dallas Bean each finished the night with 10 points. Champine grabbed a game-high nine rebounds while Bean notched six boards. Ben Parson had seven rebounds on the night. LC-M would out-rebound Lumberton 44-24 on the night. Up 40-32 heading into the fourth, the Bears got nine points from Kinsley in the frame to make sure the Raiders rally would come up short. LC-M outscored Lumberton 22-8 in the game’s final eight minutes to seal the deal. After falling in love with the outside shot at times in the game, Harley’s team found most of its points closer to the goal and was able to score sometimes at will. “That is something we talk a lot about,†Harley said. “We are not a good basketball team when we start settling for three-pointers. We are at are best when we run gaps and attack those gaps. We do real well when we don’t go all the way to the basket and get in trouble. We were able to knock down some jumpers tonight.†Lumberton also had a bit of bad luck in the fourth as Jonathan Wood, who finished with 11 points and six rebounds, fouled out with 2:35 left in the fourth. Without an inside presence, the Bears chewed up the points in the paint and built up their lead. The Bears’ slow start can be contributed to just two buckets being made in the first period by LC-M. While LC-M was struggling from the floor, both Hussey and Wood each had five points in the game’s first eight minutes. Champine warmed up in the second as the senior scored seven points before heading into half-time, with three coming right at the buzzer from deep beyond the arc. Neither team had great third periods as Lumberton outscored LC-M 10-9 in the frame as the Bears led 40-32 heading into the fourth. LC-M returns to action Friday when they travel to face Vidor who is 1-3 in the district loop. -
