  1. Report: South Oak Cliff must forfeit basketball title DISD finds ineligible player used during 2006 run to state 04:33 AM CST on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 By DAMON L. SAYLES / The Dallas Morning News [email protected] The South Oak Cliff boys basketball team will have to forfeit its 2006 state championship, according to a WFAA-TV (Channel 8) report late Tuesday. Two months ago, WFAA reported SOC player Kendrake Johnigan was academically ineligible during the team's run to the Class 4A state championship in the 2005-06 season. WFAA reported Tuesday that the Dallas ISD's office of professional responsibility has concluded its investigation and found the original story to be accurate. Calls to DISD athletic director Jeff Johnson and DISD spokesperson Jon Dahlander were not returned. South Oak Cliff coach James Mays II said he got word of the story Tuesday night following his team's district game against A. Maceo Smith. Mays said he is declining to comment until he has met with representatives from the DISD administration. SOC will be forced to forfeit the state title for violating the University Interscholastic League's "No Pass, No Play" rule.

  3. Coach responds to South Oak Cliff grade-changing probe 02:01 AM CST on Thursday, November 22, 2007 By BRETT SHIPP / WFAA-TV [email protected] WFAA-TV South Oak Cliff Golden Bears players hold up their 2005-2006 basketball championship trophy. DALLAS – James Mays II, South Oak Cliff's head basketball coach, said Dallas Independent School District officials have already cleared him of allegations that he allowed an ineligible athlete to play on his state championship team. Coach Mays's statement was in response to a News 8 investigation into alleged cheating by the South Oak Cliff head coach and then school principal, Donald Moten. The News 8 investigation raised questions about the eligibility of South Oak Cliff basketball player Kendrake Johnigan, who helped lead his team to two straight state championships. School records, legally obtained by News 8, showed that just days before winning the 2006 state title, Johnigan was allowed to drop an English class in which he was failing. Frank Hammond, a former school counselor, said Johnigan's English teacher was forced to change that grade by Moten. Hammond said he raised concerns as soon as he found out. "He got a 50 and that would have made him ineligible for participation on the state championship basketball team, but that fifty was changed to a 73," he said. Hammond also said he was involved in a meeting to discuss Johnigan’s situation with Moten and Coach Mays. He said when he took his concerns to his counseling department supervisor, he quickly found himself suspended and later fired for allegedly altering another student's grades. Hammond said it was a clear cut case of retaliation. Mays admitted he signed off on the failing student's transfer, but said the issue was investigated and he was cleared. DISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said no one has been cleared of anything involving the alleged grade changing at South Oak Cliff High School. "I'm not satisfied that the matter has been fully vetted, so obviously, we are going to reinitiate the investigation and look at the matters that have been brought to our attention," Hinojosa said.

  5. Lumberton boys 4, Port Neches-Groves 1 NEDERLAND -- Returning MVP Brent Waldrep and defending 20-4A champion Lumberton came calling and took the midfield away from Port Neches-Groves, forcing the issue and winning 4-1 Tuesday at Prather Field. The Raiders (2-4 and 2-0) of coach Chad Luttrell outshot PN-G, 14-6, and took a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal by Taylor Granato which got past a diving Steven Baque, who managed 10 saves for the Indians. Waldrep showed his dominance on the night's final goal, taking the ball some 50 yards out and zooming clear toward the penalty box before beating Baque 1 on 1 with a shot into the corner of the goal. That 4-1 lead arrived with 10 minutes to play. PN-G (3-2-1 and 1-1) tied the game at 1-1 eight minutes into the second half when junior midfielder Justice Lloyd was credited for a goal after his shot deflected off a Lumberton defender. Two minutes later, Lumberton regained the lead when Waldrep and Mark Morrell teamed up to place the Tribe out of position. Granato's fastbreak goal bumped it up to 3-1 two minutes later. "We had a difficult time with their speed," Indians second-year head coach Don Sandell said. "Their goals were legit. Lumberton was beating us to the ball in the midfield. We lost to a good team." The Indians will play Ozen on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in South Park's Greenie Stadium.
  6. Bulldogs wallop Silsbee 11-1 HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER The Port Arthur News NEDERLAND -- When Silsbee visited Nederland a year ago, the Tigers escaped Bulldog territory with a 4-3 win that severely harmed Nederland's playoff ambitions. The Bulldogs certainly had no intention of allowing a repeat result to occur on Tuesday night at Bulldog Stadium. Thoroughly dominating shots on goal, 42-5, Nederland barked out an 11-1 triumph over Silsbee after commanding a 4-0 halftime advantage. "I think we're playing much more of Nederland soccer now," said a pleased sixth-year head coach Rob Bledsoe after the Dogs improved to 4-2 and 2-0. Junior goalkeeper Tyler Vidrine played virtually three-fourths of the game in the net and delivered a shutout over his 60 minutes. Two of Bledsoe's forwards, sophomore Jordan O'Neill and junior Garrett Raines, delivered two goals apiece. Junior forward Ryan Washburn, last year's 20-4A newcomer of the year, produced one goal and three assists. Seniors Logan Butler and Hunter Turk added one goal and two assists each. Other lone-goal scorers included Brent Salenga, Jake Kemp, Bey Calloway and Hector Garcia. Miles Lawler also produced an assist. Nederland will visit Little Cypress-Mauriceville on Friday at 7 p.m.
  7. Nederland bombs PN-G The Port Arthur News PORT NECHES-GROVES — After dropping a pair of games last week to fall back in the mix of the District 22-4A standings, the Nederland Bulldogs desperately needed a victory over crosstown rival, PN-G on Tuesday night. And for a team that has made it custom to start games slow, Nederland wasted no time in setting the pace at the Reservation. The Dogs jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and then dropped 23 more on the Indians in the second period to get out to a 37-18 lead at halftime. In that second quarter, Nederland was paced by Francis Torres and Chris Hammond. Hammond and Torres combined for 21 of Nederland's 23 points in the second quarter. Torres, who had 20 on the night, scored 11 in the second frame. He also hit a three in the period. Hammond hit two treys in the second quarter and scored 10 of his 18 points in the quarter. Hammond also had seven boards in the contest, leading the way for the Bulldogs who had 23 rebounds as a team. The Indians won the third quarter 12-9 and to cut the game to 46-30 to start the final eight minutes. Nederland had done too much damage, however, and both teams coasted in the fourth quarter where the Dogs outscored the Tribe 18-14. Travis Thompson led PNG with 13 points. He was the only Indian in double figures. With the win, Nederland improves to 15-11 overall and 5-3 in district play and completed the season sweep over PN-G. Meanwhile, the Tribe falls to 10-13 overall and 1-7 in district and will travel to Lumberton on Friday. PN-G beat Lumberton in its second district game of the season. The Dogs 5-3 league mark keeps them in pace with Vidor, who beat Dayton 65-49 in Vidor on Tuesday night. With that loss, Dayton falls to 4-4 and sits a game behind the Pirates and Nederland, who are tied for the third and final playoff spot.

  9. Jasper nips Lady Cards in double OT thriller Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader BRIDGE CITY — A full game was not enough for the Bridge City Lady Cardinals and Jasper Lady Bulldogs Tuesday night in Cardinals Gym. So the two teams decided to make it a game and a half as it took until double overtime for Jasper to swipe a 74-71 victory. Jasper’s Courtney Baker and Shelethia Middleton hit key free throws down the stretch and were able to keep the Lady Cardinals off the board in the final 40 seconds of the game. Bridge City falls to 6-15 overall and 2-8 in District 21-3A play while Jasper improved to 4-12 on the year and 2-8 in the district standings. That is when Baker ripped a three-pointer as time expired off the clock to force the first overtime period. Neither team could do much in the first overtime as both squads only hit a free throw to be tied at 65.
