A&M edges Oklahoma St. to stop three-game skid STILLWATER, Okla. — Dominique Kirk hit the go-ahead free throws with 44 seconds left, and No. 18 Texas A&M held on for a 59-56 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday to snap a three-game losing streak. After Kirk put the Aggies (16-4, 2-3 Big 12) up 57-56, the Cowboys squandered their first chance to move ahead when forward Ibrahima Thomas — a 64 percent free throw shooter — came up empty on two foul shots with 20 seconds left. Texas A&M's Donald Sloan, who was fouled after grabbing the rebound, missed the front end of a 1-and-1 before James Anderson, Oklahoma State's leading scorer, missed a 3-pointer that could have put the Cowboys (10-9, 1-4) on top. Bryan Davis made two free throws for the Aggies with 3.9 seconds left, and Sloan stole Oklahoma State's inbounds pass after a timeout and tossed it into the rafters to end the game. Josh Carter, who injured his leg and briefly left the game in the final sequence, scored 13 points to lead Texas A&M, which bounced back after a five-overtime loss to No. 25 Baylor on Wednesday. Kirk and Joseph Jones scored 11 points apiece. Anderson led Oklahoma State with 15 points, while Thomas added 13 and Obi Muonelo 10. The Cowboys, who are off to their worst start in Big 12 play, were held scoreless after Anderson hit one free throw with 2:52 remaining to make it 56-53. Byron Eaton was whistled for an offensive foul on their next possession, and Marcus Dove couldn't connect in the lane after Sloan had tipped in his own miss to get A&M within a point. Kirk was fouled while rebounding Dove's miss, and that proved enough for Texas A&M to escape with the win. It was evident early that the Aggies were coming off a five-overtime game only three days earlier. They turned the ball over on eight of their first 13 possessions, but got back on track in time to pull ahead 34-32 on B.J. Holmes' 3-pointer just before halftime. When they weren't turning the ball over, the Aggies shot 51.2 percent from the field and outrebounded Oklahoma State 32-23. Thomas pushed the Cowboys into the lead by scoring four straight Oklahoma State baskets to launch a 15-6 run. He had a two-handed jam off a nifty pass from Anderson, followed that by tipping in Eaton's miss to put the Cowboys ahead 41-40 with 13:40 remaining, and then added a right-handed hook shot. But on the Aggies' next possession, Thomas was called for his fourth foul while defending a post move by Davis and had to go to the bench. The Cowboys still were able to extend their lead, with Anderson's 3-pointer from the left side making it 50-44. Carter hit a 3-pointer to get Texas A&M within one before Thomas returned, and then made a runner from the right side to put the Aggies up 53-52.

Bear booters make statement in win over Nederland Special to the Leader The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears boys soccer team won a dramatic district contest against the Nederland Bulldogs Friday night at home at Battlin’ Bear Stadium. After the game ended in a 1-1 tie in double overtime, the Bears won the shoot-out 2-1. The victory earned the Bears two points in the district standings. By the excited and thankful look on Bears Head Coach Matt Wedel's face, it was clear this Bears win was significant. “I have never been more proud of a team's performance,†said an exhausted Wedel, of his team's hard-fought effort. Not only did the Bears fight a strong Bulldog team, they also battled rain, cold, and a very sloppy field. In the first half, the Bulldogs scored first when Bear defenders lost their footing on the slippery field for a 1-0 lead. Bear senior Brad Hearn responded with a goal from 25 yards out that curved inside the near post and snaked past the Nederland goalie. Throughout the first half, LCM's defense was bailed out on numerous occasions by senior goalie Ethan McKay and Junior Brett Heil. The first half ended in a 1-1tie. In the second half, the Bears appeared to gain momentum. At least three Bears' shots on goal were denied when they collided with the goal post. As the contest continued, seniors Logan Tarver, Seth Artega, and Jared Fall were critical in keeping the game scoreless through the second half. The teams exhaustdly battled each other in two scoreless overtime periods. The teams pressed on to the shoot-out. Three players brought the victory to the Bears during the shoot-out. McKay prevented all but one shot from scoring. Senior Craig Leger connected for the Bears first point. And with the Bears down to their final kick, sophmore Scott Karasik nailed his shot to secure victory for the Bears. The Karasik goal caused his teamates and the home crowd to burst into cheers. "It was a phenomenal game", said a thrilled Coach Wedel. "Nederland is a great team, but our kids were up to the task. Ethan McKay proved once again that he is a dominant goalie." The memorable win was a hard earned team effort. And for the Bears, a most satisfying night for a team that proved that it will be in the thick of the playoff hunt. The Bears will continue their quest Tuesday when they play host to defending district champion Beaumont Central.

Williams ignites Lady Bears Gabe Pruett The Orange Leader LITTLE CYPRESS — It is obvious the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears are not having the season teams dream of when the season starts. At 6-18 on the year and 1-9 in District 22-4A play, the Lady Bears have struggled to find wins. One player Coach Amanda Ellerbee never has to worry about is junior Ellen Williams. Whether up by 15 or down by 20, Williams attitude and effort stays beyond 100-percent in Ellerbee’s eyes. “She is one of those kids you never have to worry about picking up her game,†Ellerbee said. “She gives 100-percent all the time, no matter what. I have never seen a kid go as hard as she does for as long as she does. That is why she is captain of this team.†This is not the first season Ellerbee has noticed William’s tenacity. Williams was a star on the junior varsity squad a season ago and could have easily made the move up to varsity. Ellerbee wanted to keep Williams away for one season to grow as a player and work on her game. “I like just going out there and playing,†Williams said. “I practice every day and even when not at school. I like to go shoot at my church and at home.†Williams is averaging about 15 points a game this season for the Lady Bears. It is not just the scoring Ellerbee has enjoyed this season. “There is really not enough I can say about her,†the second-year coach said. “She is just always giving a constant effort. The best thing about her is if she makes a mistake or misses a shot, she is the kind of player who will just keep shooting. She never lets anything affect her. Also it is a good thing she is just a junior and will be around next year.†Williams has certainly enjoyed playing this season directly under Ellerbee. “I love the way she coaches because not only is she a coach, she is a friend to all of us,†Williams said. “That makes it real easy to want to go out and play for her. I have certainly learned a lot over the last two years. Plus all my teammates are great. We are all friends and have all become real close. We are all juniors and one senior (Nardis McBride). Nardis has really stepped up this year and become a great leader.†The Lady Bears have just three games left on the schedule. They travel to face Nederland Tuesday before playing host to Lumberton on Friday. LC-M finishes the season at Vidor on Feb. 5. “I really just want us to win the remaining games and finish strong,†Williams said. “We want to just do better in the second half of district. That will help carry over to the next year.†A year in which both Ellerbee and Williams are excited about the captain and the team’s future.
