Rockets edge Trail Blazers 99-95 for 50th win PORTLAND — With his former teams meeting in the arena at the end of Clyde Drexler Drive, it seemed only appropriate that the Rockets and Trail Blazers paid tribute. Last week, the Rockets lost to the Trail Blazers without Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady. On Wednesday, they played Dancing with the Stars. Beyond even the worst Glide missteps on the show, it was not pretty. But with Yao and McGrady performing a stomp just long enough, the Rockets were able to let a 25-point lead slip and still hold on for a 99-95 victory. They even added a new concern when Portland rookie Brandon Roy, diving for a loose ball, fell into McGrady's left knee in the last minute. McGrady did not return, but trainer Keith Jones said the knee was "fine." McGrady finished with 32 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while Yao scored 27 with 12 rebounds. Rafer Alston added 23 points, with the Rockets needing nearly every one. With the Blazers' Joel Przyzbilla, Zach Randolph and LaMarcus Aldridge already out for the season, and Ime Udoka on Wednesday joining them because of a sore right knee, Portland was incredibly thin in the frontcourt, even by the shutting-it-down standards of most lottery teams. Yet, facing all that and a 25-point deficit, the Blazers pushed the Rockets all the way to the final seconds. After building their largest lead midway through the third quarter, the Rockets eased up and never could seem to get it going again. They still led by 15 in the fourth quarter when Yao came off the bench to knock down two free throws. But he missed his next three shots as Luke Schenscher hit a hook over him and Roy and Fred Jones each sank 3s for an 8-0 run to within seven. With four minutes left, the Blazers were within five. But Yao, who had missed his previous two free throws, hit two, and McGrady dropped in a 3 and two more free throws to give the Rockets a 10-point lead heading into the final 3:10. Even then, however, the Rockets could not close it out comfortably. The Blazers were still within six in the final minute, with Alston missing two free throws with 24.2 seconds left. Roy missed a 3, but still the Rockets could not grab the win, failing to pull in the rebound, so that when Travis Outlaw knocked down a 3-pointer, Portland had it at 94-91 with 12.8 seconds left. Finally, Alston made two free throws with 11.9 seconds left to end it, giving the Rockets their seventh 50-win season in franchise history, and second in the past three years. With the Utah Jazz's loss to the Nuggets, the Rockets too have a game-and-a-half lead in their race for homecourt advantage, having left town with a three-game home losing streak to come home with a three-game sweep of the road-trip tour of lottery teams. They knew the latest win, however, was much more difficult than it had to be. The Rockets had begun to pull away in the last six seconds of the first half, when McGrady scored on a drive and Alston stole the inbounds pass and nailed a 3 for a 17-point Rockets lead at the half. The Rockets missed their first three shots of the second half, and then took off. They scored 18 points in the next six minutes, with McGrady scoring nine points in that stretch and 13 in the quarter. His jumper with 5:51 left in the third quarter gave the Rockets their largest lead, 71-46. From there, the question became whether they could make it enough of a blowout to clear the bench early. Instead, after building their 25-point lead, they made just 1 of 8 shots to end the third quarter, launching four 3-pointers and mixing in three turnovers to help Portland reduce the lead to 78-59. The Rockets were 48-7 when leading after three quarters. And whatever difficulties they have had closing out games, a 19-point lead seemed more than enough. But with the Blazers pressing and scrambling and generally outworking the Rockets, they turned themselves into pests the visitors could not shoo away.

Phelps, Wiedenfeld win singles crowns for Nederland tennis By Tom Halliburton The Port Arthur News VIDOR -- Jessica Phelps may not have looked quite ready to scare Maria Sharapova or Serena Williams but nobody in District 22-4A could offer much resistance. The Nederland senior improved to 25-4 and easily appeared to be the class of the girls singles bracket on a bizarre weather day at the District 22-4A tennis championships. The top-seeded Phelps rolled by Little Cypress-Mauriceville senior Amanda George, 6-2, 6-1. She had plowed through her previous opponents without losing a set, either, and she led a convincing list of Nederland regional qualifiers. Second-seeded Bulldogs junior Ben Wiedenfeld joined Phelps as a singles champ in the boys division, knocking off top-seeded LC-M junior Jude Layne, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the championship match. NHS standout mentor Jorge Lopez had room on the bus for two more district champions. Solid-as-a-rock, UT-bound Rushi Sukhavasi and James Morua made good on their No. 1 seed by defeating fellow Nederlanders Drew Dusong and Aaron Elizondo in the boys doubles final, 6-1, 6-4. When the 4A regional tournament convenes Apr. 23-24 at Huntsville's McAdams Tennis Center, two more sets of doubles champs will be assured of their regional trips. Vidor's unseeded duo of Brittany Crossley and Kayla Williamson defeated the No. 1-seeded LC-M pair of Jenny Collins and Stephanie Scheer, 6-3, 6-2, to capture the girls doubles title. Laura Chapman and Cory Odom claimed an all-Lumberton mixed doubles title match by defeating Brittany Guyton and David Muha, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4. Four more regional qualifying berths will be settled this afternoon on Vidor's courts at 1 p.m. Only LC-M senior Amanda George was assured of a regional berth on Wednesday as girls singles runner-up. She found it difficult to contend with Phelps, whose good variety on her returns and solid placement of her serves looked obvious. The LC-M challenger was never able to break the serve of Phelps, who plans to keep playing college tennis, most likely at Lamar. "I didn't play as well as I wanted to," the NHS senior said. "I played allright. I just tried to keep it as low as I could." Phelps has battled shoulder tendinitis since she transferred from West Brook last summer. She said the shoulder prevented her from being able to serve harder. Like an effective baseball pitcher, though, the standout Nederland singles star knew exactly where to place her serves -- deep and in the corners. "She lost in the Galveston finals but she beat several good players to get there," Lopez said of his prize pupil. "She probably has the best chance to reach state of anyone from our district." Lopez has worked with Phelps on her game over the past three summers. Phelps said the former LU tennis great has strengthened her mental game. "He's been helping me mentally for sure," Jessica said. "He's always helping me to try to stay positive... The biggest thing I need to improve is my footwork." The 18-year-old Phelps dealt with a most insane day of tennis weather. When tennis players arrived before their first-round matches at 9 a.m., they figured it looked like rain. Of course it was cold, too. By the time Jessica and LC-M's George played in the finals, the temperature practically neared the 90-degree mark. The late afternoon heat may have affected the boys title match, because Nederland's Wiedenfeld and LC-M's Layne played a third set which mirrored the two previous ones. The tall NHS junior led 3-0 in the final set, only to see the determined LC-M junior battle back to 3-2. Wiedenfeld closed out the match, though, by winning three of the last four games. He broke Layne's serve three times in the final set. "I was tired the whole time (in the final set) and trying not to show it," Wiedenfeld said. "He (Layne) was showing it too, though. It was pretty hot, yet it was cold this morning."

BC's Jaques wins three events at 21-3A meet Van Wade The Orange Leader ORANGEFIELD — The great Michael Jordan would’ve been proud of Bridge City senior Christina Jaques Wednesday. After all, Jaques poured in 30 points. Wait a second though, Jaques scored her 30 in the District 21-3A Track & Field Championships. The splendid four-sport Lady Cardinal standout captured three first-place finishes, winning the long jump, triple jump and high jump at Orangefield High School. Jaques cleared a school-record in the long jump, ripping off a leap of 17 feet, 4 3/4 inches. She won the triple jump with a 35-8 1/4 effort and claimed the high jump by going five feet. “I really felt good in the long jump after struggling in the high jump,†said Jaques, who has high jumped 5-6 this season. “I really wanted to make a statement by being more competitive in the long jump. The conditions were nice as far as the jumps today. I was fortunate enough to land a big one.†The 30 points were big as far as the Lady Cardinal team point total goes. “The best thing about it was that I was able to help the team out,†Jaques said. “That’s what it is all about. We have such a good, well-rounded team and I really think we have a shot at the team championship. Hopefully this will get us off to a good start going into the running finals.†“Christina, what another phenomenal day for her,†said Lady Cardinal head coach Karen Bozeman. “She’s just an amazing athlete. She’s been battling an injury (quad) and she came out here and racked up 30 points. That’s a tough thing to do in any track meet and to be able to do that in a district meet, that’s shows how special she is.†West Orange-Stark senior Jacoby Franks stormed to both jumping titles on the boys side, winning the long jump by going a Southeast Texas area season-best of 22-8 and he claimed the triple jump with a leap of 43-8 3/4. “I liked my chances today and I knew I was going to have to compete hard to get a regional spot,†Franks said. “There were so many tremendous jumpers here and it’s a wonderful feeling to come out and get the job done. I thought 22 feet would get me in but 22-8, I never really expected that. I really got up on that one and my speed was pretty good on my approach.†Mustang coach Toby Foreman knew Franks had it in him. “Jacoby Franks, the best word to describe him is ‘competitor’, “ Foreman said. “He went 22 feet earlier in the year so we knew he had it in him. He goes at everything he does 100 percent, whether it’s football, baseball or track. Jacoby and Earl (Thomas) love competing against each other in everything. To have those two going at it in practice every day, that’s fun to watch.†Thomas earned a regional berth by placing third in the long jump with a mark of 21-5 3/4. The tightest event of the day came in the boys shot put between two of the area’s finest in WO-S senior Adrian Mims and Silsbee’s Ahmad Jones, who had both tossed an area-best of 51-1 this season. In the finals Jones captured first place with a superb heave of 51-7 1/4, just nipping Mims, who had a mark of 51-6. The two will meet again Apr. 27-28 at the Class 3A Region III Track & Field Championships at Humble High School. “It was exciting and I thought I could pull it out,†Mims said. “Jones reached out there and got a big one too. I gave him best regards and we’ll be back at it again when regionals come around. It was fun and I’m just glad to have an opportunity to get back to regionals.†Orangefield’s Justin Granger nabbed Orange County’s other first-place finish Wednesday, winning the discus with a toss of 126-8. Bridge City’s Chase Leger (6-0) and Orangefield’s Derek Evans (5-10) both advanced to regionals by placing second and third respectively in the high jump. Hardin-Jefferson’s Justin Anderson won the event by going 6-2. Orangefield’s Shea Mayo nabbed second in the pole vault by going 11-6. On the girls side, WO-S senior Vanquanisha Jordan was second behind Jaques in the long jump with a 17-0 1/4 effort. Other winners on the girls side Wednesday included Hamshire-Fannett’s Jalisa Harry in the discus (96-0) and Silsbee’s Sherry Wineland in the pole vault (9-6). Kirbyville’s Latoya Crawford led a 1-2-3 Lady Wildcat sweep in the shot put by tossing 33-1. On Tuesday, Bridge City’s Erica Garza qualified for regional by winning the 3,200 meters in 12:53.28. The District 21-3A running finals will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at Orangefield High School. The District 22-4A Track & Field Championships will have its running finals today at 5 p.m. -
