  4. Glittering high school career earns honor for UH coach Achievements highlighted by four state titles at Stephenville University of Houston football coach Art Briles has been selected to be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco. Briles, along with the rest of the class of 2008, will be inducted May 3. An announcement is expected Wednesday. Briles, who won four Class 4A state championships at Stephenville, will join former Cougars football coaches Bill Yeoman and Jack Pardee as Texas Sports Hall of Fame inductees. "To me, personally, it's a numbing experience, honestly," Briles said. "I'm in total gratitude to all the dedicated players and coaches that I've been fortunate to have been around for the last 30 years. It's a tremendous honor, it really is." Briles, who played college football at the University of Houston, has spent his entire coaching career in the state of Texas. Briles spent 12 seasons at Stephenville, posting a 136-28-2 record and winning back-to-back state titles in 1994-95 and 1998-99. Now in his fifth season with the Cougars, Briles has a 29-27 record, won the 2006 Conference USA title and has taken the team to three bowls. "I'm a Texan. That's the bottom line," he said. "Being a Texas guy, that does make it special. I'm honored and kind of shocked at the same time." Briles will join a group of inductees that includes Hakeem Olajuwon (inducted in 1998), Clyde Drexler (1998), George Foreman (1986), Troy Aikman (2001), Earl Campbell (1996) and Zina Garrison (1993). "I guess they had to throw just one normal person in there," said Briles, laughing, "and I guess I'm the guy."
